Flying in the face of trading uncertainties, demand for alternatively-fuelled vehicles and especially self-charging hybrids has never been stronger.

Visible climate change, the impacts of WLTP and continued air quality concerns are dramatically influencing attitudes and behaviours. Today, Toyota and Lexus sales account for nearly 50% of the UK’s alternatively fuelled vehicles. Compared to battery-only electric vehicles, five times more buyers are choosing our self-charging hybrids.

Switch now. Reduce now. Save now.

Switching to Toyota and Lexus self-charging hybrid fleets cuts CO2 emissions, uses less fuel, minimises tax and reduces whole-life costs. It also ensures company car drivers can enjoy exceptional vehicle quality, safety and style alongside a smooth, quietly-refined hybrid driving experience.

It’s over 20 years since the first Prius hybrid was launched. Today innovation at Toyota and Lexus continues, with a line-up that now includes 20 hybrid models. Recent additions include the Corolla (Hatchback, Touring Sports and Saloon), the RAV4 and the Camry (Page 14), plus the Lexus UX compact SUV and ES saloon. The 2020 range sees two more arrivals later in the year with the All New RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and the All New Toyota Yaris.

The Corolla is built in Britain and became the first model in Europe to be offered with a choice of two hybrid powertrains. A new powerful 2.0-litre system option offers enhanced responsiveness whilst remaining fuel efficient with low emissions. The latest Prius is now available with intelligent electric all-wheel drive, whilst improvements to the RAV4 system significantly improve driving capabilities off-road and in slippery conditions.

Choose from the best.

Over the last year we have once again won several accolades and awards. In the Which? 2019/20 Car Guide, twelve Toyota models achieved ‘Best Buy’ status following independent lab tests. The current-gen Yaris Hybrid, Prius+ and RAV4 Hybrid, plus used favourites such as the Auris and Prius Plug-in were all praised for reliability. Lexus, meanwhile has been named Best Car Brand in the 2019 Which? Awards, in recognition of its industry-leading technology and the high quality of its vehicles. To find out what else we have won, turn to page 13.

Finally, expanding Toyota’s light commercial vehicle range, the new Proace City van has now gone on sale. To learn more, see page 16.

SELF-CHARGING HYBRIDS. CUT EMISSIONS, FUEL COSTS AND TAX.

Ever since we launched the Prius back in 1997, Toyota has remained

the world’s hybrid pioneer. 13 million drivers have purchased a Toyota

or Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid across the world. Together, we’ve cut

global CO2 emissions by more than 77m tonnes. Our 20 self-charging

hybrid models, plus the revolutionary hydrogen-powered Mirai,

promise rewarding, clean and fuel-efficient motoring. Even better,

businesses choosing our low or zero emissions vehicles can unlock

lower operating and ownership costs.

MAXIMISE BUSINESS FLEET SAVINGS. REDUCE WHOLE-LIFE COSTS.

Hybrids can significantly reduce fleet overheads. Low CO2 emission

models reduce taxation. Your company pays lower National Insurance

contributions and drivers pay less in Benefit-in-Kind. These company

and personal tax savings can amount to thousands of pounds over

each vehicle’s lifetime.

A DEDICATED SUPPORT NETWORK. MAKE ALL THE RIGHT CHOICES.

We have 183 Toyota and 47 Lexus Centres across the UK which

offer an unprecedented selection of model types, specifications and

drivetrain technologies. Our Commercial Vehicle Centres also provide

expert advice for LCV customers, and can support you with standard

and bespoke conversions.

SAME-DAY RESPONSE. INFORMED DECISIONS, FASTER.

Get same-day access to fleet specialists at our Business Centres

nationwide. You’ll find experienced advisors who are specially trained

to give advice on tax and whole-life costs, model choices and selecting

efficient funding methods.

CONVENIENT AND LOCAL SERVICE.

Let your local fleet manager work closely with you and your business

to provide everything you need. Our fleet team can ensure that your

vehicles will be delivered, serviced and maintained by the local

Centre(s) of your choice anywhere in the UK.

TRANSPARENT COSTS. ACCURATE FINANCIAL CONTROL.

Don’t let vehicle operating expenses become a worry or burden. With

transparent pricing and competitive fleet service and maintenance,

Toyota & Lexus Fleet keep costs manageable and controlled.

Lexus is a true innovator, but at

the same time it values important

traditions that are at the heart of

its business. Omotenashi - the

Japanese spirit of hospitality - shows

the way Lexus puts the customer

at the heart of what it does, while

the precision skills of the Takumi

master craftspeople are paramount

in achieving the highest quality

standards on every Lexus vehicle.

Environmentally responsible, and

economically efficient. Lexus offers

the company car that’s as high-

performing as your business, and

the smarter alternative to diesel.

It’s not just drivers who get to

enjoy superior fuel efficiency, high-

tech driver support systems or

Takumi design and craftsmanship.

Paired with Lexus performance

and innovation, buying a Lexus

Self-Charging Hybrid becomes an

intelligent choice for any business.

The Lexus Hybrid range is the smart

way to honour commitments to

lowering the carbon footprint of your

business. Our innovative technology

makes a difference to local and

global environmental pollution by

reducing harmful emissions, and

contributes to cleaner air in your city.

Technology and proven fuel

efficiency help minimise running

costs, helping keep finances healthy.

You can own a Lexus Self-Charging

Hybrid vehicle as you would a

conventional car - never more

complex, but instead with added

benefits. For example, a Hybrid

Health Check is included with every

service of your Lexus.

Hybrid isn’t just efficient on fuel:

it can also be beneficial on your

company’s bottom line. Over

three years of use, hybrids could

offer company tax and personal

Benefit-in-Kind liability savings. So

switching to Lexus Hybrid could be a

great investment for your business.

Over 20 years ago Toyota pioneered mass market hybrids with the development of the Prius – the world’s first petrol-electric hybrid car. By combining a petrol engine with an electric motor, the ‘hybrid’ drivetrain was born.

WHAT IS A SELF-CHARGING HYBRID?The new hybrid platform conferred significant advantages. Prius was

cleaner and more cost-efficient to maintain and run than petrol and

diesel cars. Emissions were far lower than a normal petrol or diesel car.

And, since a hybrid car could intelligently apply power from both the

electric motor and the petrol engine as needed, journeys used less fuel.

The hybrid petrol engine also recharged the electric battery automatically

– so eliminating range concerns seen in all-electric vehicles.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Unlike conventional petrol cars with a large combustion engine,

self-charging hybrids have a compact petrol engine plus an extra electric

motor. Depending on the driving conditions, our hybrid cars use power

from both the electric motor and the engine together or the two power

sources can operate entirely independently of each other, unlike some

other hybrids. The car chooses the best combination automatically,

second by second, offering smooth power and responsive torque. When…

• DRIVING UPHILL: both the engine and the motor power the vehicle to

deliver maximum performance

• DECELERATING AND BRAKING: our self-charging hybrids recover energy

through regenerative braking e.g. when you are braking to slow down

• OVERTAKING: the engine and the motor power the vehicle to deliver

maximum performance

• AT STANDSTILL: the engine and the motor are automatically switched off

so no energy is wasted when idling

POWER CONTROL UNIT

The brains of the system, it

the car is powered, depending

on the situation.

PETROL ENGINE

Although the petrol engine

still uses fuel, it is more

efficient than a normal one:

the engine is only started

when the car needs more

power or the battery needs

charging. The hybrid petrol

engine also emits much less

CO2 and almost no harmful

gases.

ELECTRIC MOTOR

The electric motor uses

electricity from the battery.

It delivers extra power to help

the petrol engine, but also

works entirely on its own.

BATTERY

A lithium-ion battery stores

electricity generated by the

car as it’s driven. It stores

enough electricity to power

the car and on average the

electric motor alone is in use

over 53% of the time*.

* Average percent of 54,943 test drives spent in electric mode on Yaris, Auris, Corolla, C-HR and RAV4 Hybrids and Prius family. Test drives taken nationally between 01/04/2017 and 28/02/2019 in a variety of weather and driving conditions. Test drives conducted over a total of 702,031 miles at an average speed of 22mph.

PETROL TANK

Just like ordinary petrol cars,

the tank stores the fuel used

by the combustion engine

when it runs.

WHY CHOOSE TOYOTA

AND LEXUS HYBRIDS?

By offering low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Toyota

and Lexus hybrids bring many environmental, financial and

practical benefits to business fleets. These include:

• Lower whole-life costs: compared to an equivalent

diesel model, our hybrids are typically cheaper to own

and run. Over 3 years/60,000 miles, the savings can run

into thousands of pounds.

• Driver appeal: drivers enjoy smooth, quiet and instantly-

responsive electric motor power, boosted by the petrol

engine when needed.

• Convenience: there’s no need to plug-in any Toyota or

Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid. Energy is cleverly conserved

in our hybrids. Every moment you’re driving, your battery

is charging. Not just on the move, but when you stop or

slow down, our regenerative braking system recovers even

more energy without you having to do a thing, so there are

no battery limitations on range.

• Greener: Toyota and Lexus hybrids produce less CO2

than conventional petrol-engine cars, helping to reduce

global warming. Unlike diesel cars, hybrids also produce

very low levels of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) and

particulates, helping to improve air quality.

• Less tax: low emissions reduce tax liability. Company

car drivers typically pay less Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) whilst

companies pay less company car tax, National Insurance

and Vehicle Excise Duty.

• Improved MPG: with the electric motor automatically

working alongside the petrol engine to maximise

efficiency according to driving conditions, get more miles

with less fuel.

• Reduced maintenance and costs: Toyota and Lexus

hybrids require fewer components. There’s no clutch,

alternator or timing belt to replace and, with regenerative

braking, brake pads wear less.

In heavy traffic, built-up areas or at slower speeds,

a Toyota or Lexus Hybrid vehicle switches to its

electric motor using no fuel at all.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL OPTIONS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Slashing carbon emissions is fundamental to combating climate change and global warming. Safeguarding

air quality in cities means cutting vehicular pollution and, in particular, minimising the most harmful

emissions from combustion powertrains.

By powering cars differently we can significantly reduce or eliminate the use of fossil fuels.

Daikin UK company car drivers reduce personal tax and emissions by choosing Lexus Self-Charging Hybrids over diesel alternatives.

CASE STUDY: DAIKIN UKRichard Truttero, Department Manager,

General Affairs at Daikin UK’s Weybridge

Headquarters, explains; “As part of a global

operation we are committed to minimising

the environmental impact of our cooling,

heating and refrigeration operations. One

of Daikin’s long term goals is to achieve

zero emissions by 2050. Today, our fleet

emissions target for 2019/20 is 115g/km

CO2. If taking action now can bring down

emissions whilst lowering costs, that’s

a route any informed company is going

to take.”

Running the numbers

Daikin has 150 cars on fleet on a four

year, 80,000 mile change cycle. In order

to reduce Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates for

employees, Richard began to investigate

comparable alternatively-fuelled

vehicles. He explains, “Greater emissions

scrutiny and the Worldwide Harmonised

Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP)

meant that some employees were

becoming concerned at the Benefit-in-

Kind taxation implications of our diesel-

only choice list. We decided to run the

numbers on hybrids.”

Choosing self-charging hybrid models

reduces taxation because of their lower

CO2 emissions. That means companies pay

lower Class 1A National Insurance, whilst

drivers can make significant personal tax

savings: hybrid vehicles attract a lower

liability for Benefit-in-Kind compared to

equivalent petrol or diesel models.

As an example, employees paying higher

rate tax, by choosing a Lexus IS Advance

4dr CVT Auto instead of an equivalent 4dr

diesel saloon reduced their Benefit-in-

Kind personal tax liability on average by

£40 a month – a saving of £480 a year.

Quality choices

It was the ability to retain premium

model choices whilst reducing Benefit-

in-Kind that attracted Richard to Lexus

hybrids. “We are one of the UK’s leading

air conditioning suppliers. Lexus

portrayed the company image, quality and

desirability we wanted whilst also leaving

drivers better off each month,” he adds.

Since agreeing terms, over 30 hybrids

have been ordered, including the new

Lexus UX, Lexus ES and Toyota Corolla

Touring Sports.

By adding Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid models to its formerly internal combustion engine-only fleet choice list, air conditioning solutions provider Daikin UK has helped its company car drivers cut CO2 whilst reducing the average personal tax liability for Benefit-in-Kind to just £297/month.

This year, once again, Toyota and Lexus vehicles have enjoyed awards, accolades and acclaim from both owners and the motoring media alike…

WHOLE-LIFE COSTS.

Does your fleet choice list reflect real whole-life model costs? Understanding your acquisition, operation, maintenance and disposal expenses is crucial.

WHO

OSTS

Over 3 years or 60,000 miles,

depreciation can account for 60%

of a vehicle’s whole-life cost.

Our analysis tools can show you

how any current UK model will

compare to owning an equivalent

specification Toyota or Lexus

hybrid. In addition, maintenance

costs for a Toyota or Lexus

hybrid can also be half that of the

comparable diesel.

Low CO2 emission hybrid fleets

offer lower National Insurance

contributions for companies

and lower Benefit-in-Kind tax

payments for drivers.

Taken all together, the

depreciation, company and

personal tax savings from

switching to hybrids can amount

to thousands of pounds over each

vehicle’s lifetime. Just take a look

at this example:
