“Lord, teach us to pray,” the disciples ask Jesus (Luke 11:1). It is a curious request in some ways. Jesus and all of his disciples were raised praying. By the me of Jesus, Judaism had developed the syna- gogue – literally a “gathering place” where people came together on the Sabbath for corporate wor- ship. In fact, our Sunday worship traces its origins to these weekly gatherings for prayer, reading and interpretaon of scripture and praise. The gospels also say (especially Luke) that Jesus prayed at other mes – oſten by himself in a quiet or “deserted” place. It is aſter one of these mes that the disciples ask him to teach them – to help them go deeper into prayer, and this is when Luke introduces what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” Perhaps you have wanted to deepen your own pracce and experience of prayer but not known where to start. Just this month, the Presbyterian Church has published a wonderful new resource – the Book of Common Worship – Daily Prayer edion. This volume includes brief paerns for prayer at the beginning, middle and close of day, all 150 psalms, a collecon of ancient and classic prayers, and leconaries (biblical readings). David Gambrell and Bill McConnell from Highland are two of the four-person leadership team that produced this resource. Here is how they describe the purpose of this volume: “The intent of the Book of Common Worship, Daily Prayer is to provide a readily accessible, conveniently or- ganized volume that will assist in the pracce of daily prayer. As the words ‘common worship’ suggest, the liturgical forms that follow reflect a tradion shared in common with the whole church, past and present. This book, therefore, is ecumenical in scope…. As common worship, daily prayer is basically communal in nature. Even when we are en- gaged in private prayer we are not alone.” In some parts of Protestant Chrisanity, the use of formal or composed prayers is frowned on. Some see it as a lack of “personal” faith when the words of others are used. Spontaneous prayer is fine, but our individual prayer life can be greatly enriched by praying under the leadership of faithful people who have gone before us. In fact, that is what the psalms are – the collected prayers of God’s people Israel, prayed by them and us for thousands of years. One of my favorite parts of the Daily Prayer book is its collecon of “Ancient and Classic Prayers.” Here is one of my favorites, aributed to Augusne of Hippo (354-430): “O loving God, to turn away from you is to fall, to turn toward you is to rise, and to stand before you is to abide forever. Grant us, dear God, in all our dues your help; in all our uncertaines your guidance; in all our dangers your protecon; and in all our sorrows your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” And this by Julian of Norwich (c.1342-1416): “In you, Father almighty, we have our preservaon and our bliss. In you, Christ, we have our restoring and our saving. You are our mother, brother, and Savior. In you, our Lord the Holy Spirit, is marvelous and plenteous grace. You are our clothing; for in love you wrap us and embrace us. You are our maker, our love, our keeper. Teach us to believe that by your grace all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. Amen.” These are two of the treasures that await. If you wish to purchase a copy, go to www.pcusastore.com. “Lord, teach us to pray,” the disciples ask Jesus (Luke 11:1). It is a curious request in some ways.

Jesus and all of his disciples were raised praying. By the time of Jesus, Judaism had developed the syna-

gogue – literally a “gathering place” where people came together on the Sabbath for corporate wor-

ship. In fact, our Sunday worship traces its origins to these weekly gatherings for prayer, reading and

interpretation of scripture and praise. The gospels also say (especially Luke) that Jesus prayed at other

times – often by himself in a quiet or “deserted” place. It is after one of these times that the disciples ask him to

teach them – to help them go deeper into prayer, and this is when Luke introduces what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Perhaps you have wanted to deepen your own practice and experience of prayer but not known where to

start. Just this month, the Presbyterian Church has published a wonderful new resource – the Book of Common

Worship – Daily Prayer edition. This volume includes brief patterns for prayer at the beginning, middle and close

of day, all 150 psalms, a collection of ancient and classic prayers, and lectionaries (biblical readings). David Gambrell

and Bill McConnell from Highland are two of the four-person leadership team that produced this resource. Here is

how they describe the purpose of this volume:

“The intent of the Book of Common Worship, Daily Prayer is to provide a readily accessible, conveniently or-

ganized volume that will assist in the practice of daily prayer. As the words ‘common worship’ suggest, the liturgical

forms that follow reflect a tradition shared in common with the whole church, past and present. This book, therefore,

is ecumenical in scope…. As common worship, daily prayer is basically communal in nature. Even when we are en-

gaged in private prayer we are not alone.”

In some parts of Protestant Christianity, the use of formal or composed prayers is frowned on. Some see it as

a lack of “personal” faith when the words of others are used. Spontaneous prayer is fine, but our individual prayer

life can be greatly enriched by praying under the leadership of faithful people who have gone before us. In fact, that

is what the psalms are – the collected prayers of God’s people Israel, prayed by them and us for thousands of years.

One of my favorite parts of the Daily Prayer book is its collection of “Ancient and Classic Prayers.” Here is one

of my favorites, attributed to Augustine of Hippo (354-430):

“O loving God, to turn away from you is to fall, to turn toward you is to rise, and to stand before you is to

abide forever. Grant us, dear God, in all our duties your help; in all our uncertainties your guidance; in all our dangers

your protection; and in all our sorrows your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

And this by Julian of Norwich (c.1342-1416):

“In you, Father almighty, we have our preservation and our bliss. In you, Christ, we have our restoring and our

saving. You are our mother, brother, and Savior. In you, our Lord the Holy Spirit, is marvelous and plenteous grace.

You are our clothing; for in love you wrap us and embrace us. You are our maker, our love, our keeper. Teach us to

believe that by your grace all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. Amen.”

These are two of the treasures that await. If you wish to purchase a copy, go to www.pcusastore.com. Happy

praying. – Cynthia Campbell

Our last few fun-filled weeks included instrument-making, drumming and dancing with Gregory Acker and Hamidou Koivogui, celebrating the Derby with our annual Derby Parade to Eastern Star Retirement Home, and many warm afternoons spent splashing and playing outside in our creek. You may have noticed the new addition of a sun shade in the play park, over the sand pit. With the help of a couple of helpful parents of children in our program, the new sun shade was installed and the chil-dren happily (and comfortably) played under it, sunburn-free! Our school year ended with an all-family picnic at Tyler Park,

having lunch, playing together, then many hugs goodbye and wishes for a wonderful summer. We look forward to doing it all again come August! Good news! We still have a few spaces available in several of our classes, so if you have a little one or know someone who does, we hope you’ll consider join-ing the fun! We know you’ll be en-chanted by our play-based, child-directed program! Give us a call at (502) 456-6991.

The committee met for the first time on May 15 with liaison from the Presbytery’s Commission on Minis-try, the Rev. Jerry Van Marter. It chose Craig Siegenthaler as its chair. The first step is to complete a “Ministry Information Form” (MIF) which will describe the congregation and the position. STITCH News Highland Presbyterian has a new set of paraments thanks to Ja Kaw, one of our STITCH students. The Worship Committee has commissioned her to make three additional sets that you will see in the coming months, in the liturgical colors of white, green, and purple. Ja came to the United States in 2014 from Myanmar. She recently completed her studies to become a nail technician and has begun working at a nail salon. She has been sewing with STITCH for 3 years. STITCH, a partnership of Highland Pres. and Kentucky Refugee Ministries, is celebrating its seven year anni-versary this month. We look forward to seeing the additional works of art that Ja is sewing for us in the future.

Adult Summer Class This summer John Miller will lead a discussion of the anthology Listening for God: Contem-porary Literature and the Life of Faith. Each week the class will discuss a short story or essay by a modern author such as Flannery O'Connor, Frederick Buechner, Annie Dillard, Garrison Keillor, and Alice Walker. A brief video interview of the author will pre-cede each discussion. Begins Sunday morning, June 3, at 9:30 am. Books will be available at the first meeting. John Miller, a member of our church, is a retired college English teacher.

Healing and Wholeness Service Why does Highland offer Healing & Wholeness services? As our newly-revised Book of Common Worship states in the introduction to these services, “Relying on Christ’s grace and the Spirit’s gifts, the church seeks to shep-herd its members through times of danger and death, illness and loss, crisis and celebration, struggle and sin.” So we gather as church to seek and offer comfort.

What needs healing in your life? Join us in the sanctuary on Thursday, June 21, at 6 p.m. as we seek the strength of God’s presence for meeting the challenges that face us.

There will be quiet prayer, reflection and music. Our pastors will also be available for a time of personal prayer. All are welcome. God will meet you there.

An APNC was elected on May 6 to begin filling the position of Associate Pastor for Membership and Mission. Once this is approved by the Session and COM, our position will be posted and we will begin re-ceiving applications. Please be in prayer for the members of this com-mittee and its work. RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Amen.”
