Four questions to help determine the proper fastener:

1. What materials are being fastened?

2. What are the load requirements?

3. What are the service requirements?

4. What is the environment?

Fasteners/Screws

Page 16: Flashings Fasteners & Accessories

• List each type of material (steel, wood, rigid insulation).

•List the thickness of each material. (Determines attachment thickness)

#1 What materials are being fastened?

Steel Purlin

Wood Decking Steel Decking

Page 17: Flashings Fasteners & Accessories

Allow at least 3 threads to extend beyond all materials.(Screw will be at least 1/2” – 1” longer than attachment length.)

Attachment thickness + ½”

1. Uplift loadRelates to the pullout / tensile / pullover strength of the screw – washer.

2. Shear loadRelates to the shear strength / ductility of the screw.

#2 What are the load requi rements?

Page 19: Flashings Fasteners & Accessories

Is there...•Vibration?•Expansion & Contraction?•Prying on the Joint?

Identify conditions that can affect the screws performance.

#3 What are the service requirements?

Determine...•Corrosion potential•Dissimilar metals

#4 What is the environment?

To eliminate confusion and assure the proper fastener is used, specifications for tapping screws should be written to include:1. Thread diameter2. Threads per inch3. Screw Length4. Point Type5. Type of screw6. Drive size7. Head style8. Fastener material9. Finish / plating / corrosion resistance (salt spray)

2. “Fine” ThreadUse in thick metal

•Slower to install.

•Provides more thread engagement.

1. “Coarse” ThreadUse in thin metal and wood.

•“Steep” thread installs faster.

•“Steep” thread loosens more quickly.

Sealant MaterialsEPDM: Standard(Non conductive)

Neoprene: Petrochemical

• Optimal sealing performance when installed at an angle.

• Provides greater pullover strength.

• Nicer installed appearance.• Paint damage minimal.• More back-out resistance

1/8” Pop RivetPop rivets are used to hold two pieces of sheet metal together, common at flashing laps, using a 2-Step method;

Step #1 - 1/8” Hole is Drilled Through both Pieces.

Step #2 - Insert Pop Rivet in Hole with Rivet Gun

Standing Seam Panel Clips

1. Floating Clip:•Independent base and tab.•Used with panel lengths greater than 30’-0”.

TWO GENERAL TYPES OF CONCEALED CLIPS

2. Fixed Clip:•One solid piece.•Used with panel lengths less than 30’-0” or snap down panels.

Note: Base of floating clipshould be centered when installed.

Thermal Expansion & ContractionDefinition: The natural characteristic of a length of metal to expand or contract relevant to a change in the metals temperature. Heat and sun expands/Cooling and shade contracts.
