    What is Hinglish?

    Hinglish is one of the worlds most famous Anglo-hybrids.

    The language, which is essentially English with a Hindi take, represents Englishfor the common person of India, mostly used by the middle-class and the lower

    middle-class of the population.

    It mixes Hindi and English words together, including sentence structures, to create

    its very own version of English.

    The mixing between Hindi and English vocabulary has occurred ever since colonial

    times. Only in the last few years, has Hinglish matured and found its place in India

    as an effective method of communication.

    Analysing the use of Hinglish in Media texts

    We are using songs, interviews and advertising slogans to portray the use of

    Hinglish.

    Context of Bollywood

    What is Bollywood?

    Bollywood is a term that refers to the Hindi-language film industry, based in the

    Indian city of Mumbai, which used to be called Bombay. Bombay + Hollywood =Bollywood.

    It also combines more than one genre in the same movie, blending elements of

    comedy, romance, action, and drama.

    People think that Bollywood is a lesser version of Hollywood, when in fact, India

    produces far more films annually that attract far greater audiences globally than

    the U.S. And, the Indian film industry is older than Hollywoodby one year.

    Bollywood is spread worldwide but not everyone knows hindi so the use of english

    and hindi becomes essential .

    The use of Hinglish as a language has become very popular, its become a

    prominent part of the culture as its a way of connecting to a wider audience.

    Hinglish in Song Lyrics

    We will now show you a song called Blue Eyes sung by YO YO Honey

    Singh.

    Try and pinpoint the english words he makes use of which leads to the merge of

    hindi and english.

    Analysis:

    The Impact:

    As you see the impact of using Hinglish in the song makes it very catchy and

    unique, the song loses its charm and impact on the audience when its translated to

    Standard English.

    Theme:

    The theme of the song can easily be figured out even if we just read the english

    words, we get to know what the singer is talking about in the song. Like, Blue eyes

    hypnotise, i swear , dress, bomb, glossy lips, tricks, baby, killer, oh yeah, bombfigure. Shows the theme in which he is talking about a girl.

    Repetition:

    The use of words like Bomb and Blue eyes are repeated throughout the

    song.Which also shows that he is talking about a particular girl who has blue eyes

    and is repeating Bomb to lay more emphasis on her figure.

    Hinglish used in Interviews

    Were going to show you a short clip of an interview, with the use of hinglish.

    heres is the script of the interview

    Now we will explore the literary features of his spoken language.

    Context:

    The context is that Kamal R Khan is a film critic, producer and director.

    Theme:

    and the theme of this interview is that he is being Questioned by a journalist about

    a derogatory statement that he passed on a celebrity.

    Dialect:

    the dialect of this interview is that He answers the questions using a merge of

    Hindi + English =Hinglish.

    Example-

    IN HINGLISH-

    Maine agar un ka hi ishtatementrepeat kiya hai and she ispheelingbad toh ukey

    mann meh khote hai, mere mann mey khote nahi.

    AND

    NOW ENGLISH:

    If i have repeated her statement and if she is feeling bad so she has ill feelings in

    her heart not me.

    Filler:

    He also uses a lot of fillers while giving the inteview. He says ji several times,

    meaning yes in standard english. He also repeats uhh, umm, and okay many

    times.

    Pronunciation:

    There are many words that have been pronounced in a different way than

    Standard English pronunciation.

    His pronunciation of english words have been greatly influenced by the

    pronunciation of the Hindi Language.

    Examples:

    Ishtatement - Statement

    Its the normal use of ISH in place of S

    Vat- What

    Normally they dont know the difference between W and V and we have a live

    example of that which is me

    Akcept- Accept

    They dont pronounce a double c, its replaced by a k

    Phirsht- First

    Pheeling- FeelingPhilm- Film

    F is always mispronounced for PH

    Hinglish in Advertisement Slogans

    The use of hinglish has also proven to be a very effective marketing technique for

    multinational companies such as coca cola, pepsi, sunsilk, etc, in india.

    Why do they make Hinglish Slogans?

    The main reason hinglish slogans have proven to be effective is because

    theyre catchy and hook the audience into remembering the product. Hinglish is

    what the wider audience/population of India connects with.

    Hinglish in Daily life

    Hinglish is the so called adaptation of the English language that has become an

    everyday part of communication in Indian society.

    There are many Hinglish words that we use in our daily life

    Like the expression,

    Na at the end of almost every statement like. e.g., Lets go na.

    Ji is just to show respect or to say yes, which is used very often.

    People dont know how to say certain words in Hindi so they use some English

    words in their conversation.

    Like, Phone, Boss, Factory, Call, Bottle,etc.
