The piping classes are generated based upon standard basic mechanical design parameters and piping materials, which enables study phase projects to closely match detailed design piping, thus minimising costly changes during the lifetime of a project. Individual pipes and groups of piping can be sized automatically to meet project criteria based upon velocity, mach number, pressure and other common flare design limits.

Flaretot Professional provides a single flare simulation environment where the accurate and rapid design and rating of flare systems can be completed for all aspects of flare design and equipment calculations. This provides a means to execute fast-tracked projects and conduct efficiency flare studies throughout the complete lifecycle of a project.

At the core of the Flaretot Professional flare simulation environment is a modern and intuitive easy-to-use graphical user interface that supports the efficient configuration of pipe network systems via a Process Flow Diagram (PFD) system overview. The intuitive, point and click, drag and drop design allows for rapid network unit definition and connectivity setup. Selected key network properties (temperature, pressure, mass flow and mach number) can be shown on the PFD to aid in finding a working solution rapidly giving the user visual feedback on design problems or bottlenecks in the flare system.

Case Management and ReportingThe case manager within Flaretot Professional ensures that all possible relief scenarios can be modelled and maintained within a single simulation file. Source cases activated within any given network case are easily defined within a user friendly graphic logic matrix. Full piping network report summaries with pipe sizing criteria can be viewed on a case by case basis via the integrated reporting capabilities, this provides rapid access to critical data to help reach a solution faster.

In addition to flare system design and rating, Flaretot Professional provides a number of additional modules for key flare related equipment design and performance calculations all of which use a single repository of consistent design data –

• Detailed flare radiation calculations - The radiation calculations are linked directly to the flare network data, so that it is easy to prepare design and turndown case studies without transcribing data from other programs, thus minimising man-hours and potential transcription errors. The module supports radiation from multiple flares simultaneously to calculate cumulative radiation.

• Detailed pollutant atmospheric dispersion calculations - The pollutant dispersion calculations are linked to the flare network data to ensure rapid and accurate preparation of calculations. The module supports dispersion from multiple flares simultaneously to calculate cumulative pollutant concentration. Both flared and flameout conditions are supported for each flare and any combination of these for multiple flares.

• Advanced relief load calculations - The relief load calculations are rigorous; component based and to codes & regulations. The fire relief load calculation for vessels (horizontal, vertical and spherical) uses the API or heat transfer models. The gas blowby relief load calculation for level control valve failure models gas escape through a liquid control valve. The heat exchanger tube rupture relief load calculation allows for rigorous calculation of relief flow for all types of conditions (two-phase, vapour, liquid or flashing liquid).

• Rigorous relief valve sizing - Relief valve (pressure safety valve) sizing and rating is carried out according to API520, in conjunction with design codes ASME VIII or BS5500 for relief valve arrangements and API526 for the relief valve selection. Calculations are carried out automatically for all specified cases to determine the maximum sizing case.

• Advanced vessel and system blowdown calculations - The blowdown module uses a rigorous component property and phase model combined with unsteady state wall and insulation heat conduction to predict conditions during vessel depressurising. Blowdown of vertical, horizontal and spherical vessels can be modelled for both fire and normal blowdown scenarios.

Rigorous Plant-Wide Process Model Integration to Flaretot The Petro-SIM open simulation platform provides the ability to use existing rigorous design basis process models to define the flare system data. This ensures consistency between the current design basis for the detailed process models in Petro-SIM and flare system design sizing analysis within Flaretot.

The integrated support for commercial database systems within Petro-SIM provides the ability for your organisation to have a single repository for project data, as well as the ability to manage revisions to the design basis models by engineering team members and maintain parallel alternative facility design for your project.

The description of component mapping and process stream data connectivity between the process design models and the flare system source design basis data is quickly and easily configured within Flaretot. Support is provided for the mapping of data from multiple process models to the multiple scenarios contained within the Flaretot model.

Connectivity from process design to flare design is managed via the integration to commercial databases; therefore, multiple iterations of process and flare design can be readily completed, while assuring consistency in the design data used throughout each engineering stage.
