/FLAMINGO LAND

The hugely successful Flamingo Land resort in North Yorkshire had a wide range of wayfinding graphics that had evolved over many years. This approach can often lead to a mismatch of styles and colours, which in turn, can create an inconsistent brand feel and general confusion for visitors.

We identified several problem areas and developed a strategy for them to follow that promised consistency and clarity for both their brand and their visitors.

Our proposal covered the entrance signage, wayfinding for park visitors, directional totems for resort guests, attraction graphics, ride information signs, warnings and facility signage.

We designed a colour scheme and bespoke set of icons that complemented their brand, whilst also recommending a suitable typeface family that provided legibility and clarity for their visitors.

Once our designs were approved, our project team managed the busy schedule of manufacturing, printing and installing of over 200 signs over a period of only three weeks.

FLAMINGO LAND COMMISIONED US TO DESIGN, PRODUCE AND INSTALL A NEW RANGE OF WAYFINDING AND SIGNAGE.

We have around twenty years experience of printing graphics

and signage for installation, and it is this knowledge and expertise that enables us to deliver the quality of service

we have become renowned for across the UK.

/DESIGNNo-one likes being shouted at, so we don’t like to use lots of uppercase text and red strike-though symbols.

We think it’s importatnt to use clear statements that communicate the critical information quickly and effectively.

TIPS FROM THE TEAM

We used a different style of sign for the main theme park and the

accommodation site because we were taking to a different

audience. The park was all about fast rides and exciting noises

so the signs reflected this. The holiday resort had a beautiful countryside backdrop so we

used more natural colours and materials.

Locally sourced Yorkshire Stone was carved and mounted with a slate disc at the entrance of each accommodation area.

A leaf to represent each area with a unique colour to help the youngest of visitors find their accommodation.

Signage using natural materials were produced for the accommodation areas to reflect the beautiful countryside surroundings. Because wood and slate was not always practical, we suggested a clever alternative; wood-effect powder coating.

TIPS FROM THE TEAM

Car park wayfinding is important to help visitors find their vehicle. The system should use familiar symbols that can demonstrate the position of the destination. Numbers and letters work well

because the order is well-known, such as the letter M occurs later

in the alphabet after B, so the distance and direction of the journey can be determined.

/WOOD?Sometimes it isn’t appropriate to use wood as sign posts because they need to be treated and maintained, and eventually rot after a few years with the need to be replaced. Now, there is a clever powder-coating technique that delivers an impressive wood effect finish and is available in a range of colours.
