Strawberry and Blueberry Shortcake (red, white, and blue)
Recipe and photo from http://tasteofhome.com
The ingredients:
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
1 cup fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons sugar
SHORTCAKE:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Dash salt
1/4 cup cold butter, cold
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sour cream
Whipped cream, optional
In a small bowl, combine the strawberries, blueberries and 2 tablespoons
sugar; set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking soda and salt. Cut
in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine milk and sour
cream; stir into crumb mixture just until moistened. Spread batter into a
greased 9-in. pie plate (batter will be thick). Sprinkle with remaining sugar.
Bake at 350° for 16-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on
a wire rack for 10 minutes; cut into six wedges. Split each wedge in half
horizontally. Serve warm with berry mixture; garnish with whipped cream if
desired. Yield: 6 servings. Enjoy!
To make the FLAG BOOKLET: (if you can spare the printer ink, I highly recommend having a flag booklet
printed off for each child to follow along with for the lesson. If not, at least
print off one or more coloring pages for them.)
1. Print the following pages onto cardstock
2. Cut each sheet in half along the long side (so each
page should be 5-1/2-inches wide)
3. Laminate if desired (all but coloring pages)
4. Punch holes in the upper and lower left corners
5. With binder rings or yarn going through the holes,
bind your booklet together (see pics below)
In the Book of Mormon we can read about Captain
Moroni who tore his coat and made it into a flag
while they were fighting an important battle.
Painting by Arnold Friberg
This is what he wrote on the
flag:
He called this flag the Title of Liberty
and it inspired his troops to keep
fighting through their
discouragement and fatigue.
Today every country in the
world has its own flag that
inspires its citizens.

I live in the United States of
America and my flag is red, white,
and blue and has 50 stars
and 13 stripes.
There is a star for every state and
a stripe for every one of the
original 13 states from when our
country was brand new.

My flag reminds us that
our country is free.
I show respect for our flag by
taking off my hat when I say the
Pledge of Allegiance or sing the
Star Spangled Banner.
I should also put my right hand
over my heart and look at the flag
while we sing or say the Pledge.
We should never let our flag
touch the ground.
And when we put our flag away
we should fold it in a special
way. It will look like a triangle
when it’s done.
I love my flag.
Here are some coloring pages for you that will help remind
you about showing respect for our special flag:
