What Fear Can Teach Us?
What can fear teach us?
In telling the story of the whale ship Essex, novelist Karen Thompson Walker shows how fear propels
imagination, as it forces us to imagine the possible futures and how to cope
with them.
The Effect Of Fear
“We need to think of ourselves as the readers of our fears. And how we choose to read our fears can have a profound effect on our lives.”
How Fear Captivates the Audience
Karen was able to capture the attention of the audience by relating to how they think about fear. She said “We all know how fear feels. But I
don’t think we spend enough time to know what it means.”
How Karen Held The Audience’s Attention
Curiosity
• Imagine you're a shipwrecked sailor adrift in the enormous Pacific. You can choose one of three directions and save yourself and your shipmates -- but each choice comes with a fearful consequence too. How do you choose?
Connection
• “We grow up thinking of fear as a weakness, just another childhood thing to discard like baby teeth and roller skates.”
