THEME

Beauty and the City. Is the city, with all its infrastructure, development, and

overpopulation, growing to be an ugly beast? Are the innovations in technology and engineering

really the main cause of degradation of the city? What can we do to turn them into the actual

solution? Man has a natural tendency towards what is good and what is beautiful. Discover this

beauty in the city through different engineering fields of man

This contest is open to all currently enrolled high school, college, and university students.

1st Place: Php 5,000

2nd Place: Php 3,000

3rd Place: Php 1,000


PHOTO SUBJECT

Any form of engineering structure such as bridges, buildings, roads etc. does not necessarily

have to be included in the photographs. The subject may be anything found in the city (e.g.

landscapes, lifestyle, Architectural, Underwater etc.) that will capture a moment or tell a story to

express your perspective on the theme.

Photos are subject for approval of the event’s committee.

PHOTO CAPTION & SHORT ESSAY

CAPTION should be brief, concise, and consistent with the photo’s message. It should only be a

phrase or a sentence in length.

ESSAY must hold relevance to the photo subject or justify its relation to the theme. It should

contain no more than 100 words.

ENTRIES

Only one (1) photo will be allowed in the exhibit for each participant.

Photos should be in TIFF or largest setting JPEG file format shot using at least a five (5)

megapixel digital camera (point-and shoot, digital lens reflex, or camera phone).

Photos should be submitted on or before OCT 25.

NOV 2 – NOV 5 (11:59PM) Liking of photos on Facebook

NOV 7 – Awarding Ceremonies

SUBMISSION

Through Electronic Mail

Two (2) copies of the entry should be attached.

Use the following formats:

Message body of the email should contain the following:

A confirmation message will be sent to indicate that the entry has been received.

WINNING ENTRIES

Winners shall be notified through SMS and email.

The Judges’ decision is final.

Proof of enrollment should be presented by the winners upon claiming prizes, either sent

through email or provided personally.


RETENTION AND RETRIEVAL

All contest materials, submissions, and winning entries will be of the organization’s property. UP

Aggregates, Incorporated has the full rights for publication and reproduction of the entries

that will best serve the purpose of the organization. Winning entries may also be used as

promotional materials by the Institute of Civil Engineering, University of the Philippines,

Diliman.

The name of the photographer will be included in the entry when used as a promotional material

or when used for any other purposes.

Creativity and Originality

Photos should go beyond the norm, it must depict the theme through brand new ideas.

The world is getting more advance, let your photo capture all of these advancement also in a

whole different perspective.

Adherence to the Theme

Photos should convey a message that will revolves around the theme. A winning photo should be

the most relevant and the best photo that would promote environmental awareness and

campaign for eco-friendly solutions to problems of today in creative ways.

Photographic Quality and Visual Impact

The goal is to achieve the best possible quality of the photograph, where images should not

contain technical flaws that will limit their usefulness. And beyond technical aspects, great

images have a well-defined subject and care has gone into their composition. The message of the

photo should be clearly and easily seen.

GUIDELINES FOR SCREENING

The following are grounds for elimination of entry:

• Plagiarized photos – photos that are neither owned nor personally taken by the

contestant. These include photos that are taken from the internet, even if the photo host

allowed the use of photo aside from personal use. Entries with plagiarized essay are also

eliminated.

• Photos with edited composition – the compositions of the photo submitted are altered

such as the addition or subtraction of partial elements included in the photo. Cropping,

applying filters & distortion techniques and photo color & contrast adjustments to the

WHOLE PICTURE are allowed as long as no part of the whole composition is changed,

such as, but not limited to, merging two photos into one or cutting and pasting a part of

one photo to another.

• Entries that did not follow the mechanics – these include, but are not limited to, entries

that did not meet the photo standards (at least 5 Megapixels) or photo format (JPEG or

TIFF) with incomplete or wrong entry details like caption, short essay, photo duplicate

and others. Entries that were sent twice (either through e-mail or through the Facebook

Fanpage) are also eliminated. Two or more entries by a single contestant will also be

eliminated. Only one entry per contestant is allowed.

• Entries that were sent after the deadline – no entries are accepted after the set deadline

(October 25) unless an extension of the submission period is announced.

All entries will be subjected under the screening committee. Contestants with their entries

eliminated are no longer allowed to send entries to Fix and Focus 2015. However, they are

allowed to participate in the Fix and Focus the following year.


Entries that passed the screening committee will proceed to judging wherein the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

place, as well as the special awards recipients will be chosen.
