1. Where were you born and raised and attend school?

>> I’m a Chicago native, born just across the northern city limits in Evanston.

My high school was Lane Tech, a remarkable college preparatory school with

5,000 students --- all boys back then. I graduated from Northern Illinois

University in 1971, worked in advertising for Montgomery Ward for three

small Midwestern town. And

that’s exactly what I did!

2. What is your favorite

hobby and how did you

start it?

>> Music --- especially folk,

bluegrass, early country and

vintage jazz! I started

annotated CD reissues of

many of those same records,

including favorite artists like

Homer & Jethro, the

Weavers, the Kingston Trio,

Red Ingle, Hank Williams,

Chet Atkins and quite a few

others! Lately I’ve worked on reissue projects with Merle Haggard, Bill

Anderson and the Browns. I’m involved in The Kingston Trio Legacy

display at the Smithsonian and the Grammy Museum next year. Since 2009

I’ve written the scripts and helped supervise the `National Barn Dance

Tribute’ shows at the Indiana State Fair, several of which have aired on WFYI.

3. How long have you worked for the U.S. Postal Service and how did

you become interested in doing so?

>> I’ve worked for the Postal Service for twenty years, but I can’t honestly say

I was ever interested in it! In the mid-90’s I was a partner in a Lafayette

copywriting service, preparing manuals, scripts, newsletters and promotional

materials for Alcoa, TRW Ross Gear, Purdue Ag and several local ad

agencies. When my wife Jean was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in

1992, medical bills and skyrocketing insurance premiums devastated my

income. When the Postal Service offered a nighttime job at the Lafayette plant

--- with benefits --- I was grateful for the opportunity. After four years there I

became Postmaster at Sedalia in 1999 and was fortunate to be named

Postmaster for Buck Creek in May 2003.

4. Do you have an amusing story you’d like to share from your time as

Postmaster at Buck Creek? >> Well, I can’t think of anything particularly hilarious, but this past season

I’ve had a running battle with birds that get into the office! This winter three

of them entered through the furnace intake. This spring another wiggled his

way into the dark common area between the post office and the rear apartment.

It takes some `Rube Goldberg’ thinking to get them out the front door. (I don’t

think Postal Service regulations allow an office cat!)

5. What will you miss about Buck Creek when you retire?

>> Oh, the people! Over time you get to know everybody pretty well. Often I

think about the folks now gone: Charlie, Ila and Rick Younker; Everett Riffey;

Michael Leap; Ginny Lesley; Charlie Vaught; Dave Roberson; Mildred Dubes.

The babies I remembered from a decade ago now pick up their parents’ mail,

often running to the counter and shouting, “Hi, Dave!” But there’s one thing

I’ll remember most of all. When Jean was diagnosed with Stage IV breast

cancer in 2010, Buck Creek UMC members volunteered to place her on the

prayer chain, even though only a few of you ever met her personally. Her odds

of surviving four years? One in five. Now we’re halfway into 2014. Each day

poses an unwelcome and often uncomfortable challenge, but Jean is still with

us and driving to her job in Kokomo every morning. Your prayers made the

difference. Words could never express my gratitude for your love, kindness

and concern.

salad, skewered fruit, and a variety of home baked cookies. (See Recipe

Corner.) We were treated to a fashion show (see photos) and the singing

skills of Coley Sharp. Coley sang four songs including “Eye on the Sparrow”.

Retta Whiteaker was the emcee for the fashion show which was a delight!

Thanks to: Ruth Davidson for hosting; all the guys & gals that helped;

Pastor Dwight Monical for helping and his piano. Also thanks to Retta and

RECIPE CORNER Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the

glory of God. -1 Corinthians 10:31

Two recipes this month, both from the Mother-Daughter Banquet! Rice Pilaf

by Ruth Davidson, and the Pink Cookies by Retta Whiteaker.

RICE PILAF (serves 6)

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 onion, chopped (granulated onion powder can be substituted)

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

2 cups long-grain white rice

3 cups chicken stock (3 chicken bullion cubes and 3 cups water can

be substituted)

1 teaspoons salt

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Frozen diced carrots & peas or other bits of veggies to add color

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Melt butter and olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion (or

onion powder) and garlic powder ; cook and stir 3 to 4 minutes to thoroughly

coat the rice.. Remove from heat.

1. Pour rice mixture in a 9 x 13 casserole dish placed on a baking sheet.

Combine chicken stock, salt and cayenne pepper in a saucepan. Bring

to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes.

2. Pour chicken stock mixture over rice in the casserole dish and stir to

combine. Spread mixture evenly along the bottom of the pan. Cover

tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil.

3. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes. Remove from oven;

remove foil, add frozen carrots & peas and fluff with a fork to

separate the grains of rice. Return to oven for 5-7 minutes to heat

veggies. Remove dish from oven and allow to rest, covered, for 10

minutes. Enjoy!

PINK COOKIES (strawberry)

1 box Strawberry cake mix

1/3 cup oil

1/4 cup milk

1 egg

1/4 cup pureed strawberries (if desired, works without)

Powdered sugar

Chopped pecans (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix all ingredients except powdered sugar. You

can mix by hand, or with mixer. Mix just until everything is well

incorporated. Scoop into 1 inch dough balls onto parchment lined cookie

sheet. You could use a well-greased cookie sheet, but I prefer parchment

paper. Bake at 375 f for 10 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown.

Allow to cool on pan for about 2 minutes then move to cooling rack. While on

cooling rack, sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve.

INDIANA UNITED METHODIST ANNUAL CONFERENCE The Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church (INUMC) held its

annual conference on May 29 – 31, 2014, at the Indianapolis Convention

Center. The theme this year was “The Outwardly Focused Church.” There was

an emphasis on mission, outreach, and churching outside the building.

Thursday's laity luncheon had three presentations about outreach. We saw a

video and heard from Francis Mustapha who, after a career as a teacher in Fort

Wayne, went back to his native Sierra Leone to build and to open a school –

the Medina Village School.

The second presentation featured the Upper Room Recovery Center which

is part of First UMC of South Bend. It is a residential recovery center in the

church.

The final presentation featured a panel of five young pastors talking about

what young adults want in their worship, church, service, etc. One mentioned

telling stories of the church at its best, e.g. weekly suppers for the poor.

Bishop Gregory Palmer of the West Ohio Conference spoke at the worship

service. His topic was “Confess, Repent, Believe” and was based on Mark 1:1-

15. Bishop Palmer said to confess openly and confess boldly. God can't deal

with it until you acknowledge it. He said to repent is to turn 180 degrees

towards God and aligned with God. Then we must believe in forgiveness and

must also forgive. We must spread the word of forgiveness through grace and

mercy. The service had a dramatic intertwining of a litany of confession and a

hymn by Chris Rice.

The business portion of the session was fairly uneventful and celebrated

several successes, including the establishment of pensions for all UMC

ministers, including ones in Africa. The conference acknowledged that the

harsh winter had hurt attendance and also financial support for local churches.

The INUMC budget was presented as a 5-point program, based on the Fruitful

Congregation model:

$2.5 M for worship support

$2.5 M for new disciples

$2.3 M for growth as disciples (lay and clergy support)

$2.2 M for missions and engagement

$4.4 M for missions through the connectional system

The last two items account for 47% of the budget.

The conference will raise funds for a professorship in agriculture and

scholarships at Africa University. The goal is $1.6 M; I brought information

and materials back about the campaign and gave them to the Missions

committee. Some BCUMC members may recall Africa University alumnus

Christian Kakez- a-Kapend, who had been an intern at the Wesley Foundation

at Purdue and who spoke about Africa University at BCUMC. He spoke at the

INUMC about Africa University. I spoke with him briefly afterward and I was

startled that he remembered BCUMC quite well. When he came to BCUMC,

Page 12: FIVE QUESTIONS! · My high school was Lane Tech, a remarkable college preparatory school with 5,000 students --- all boys back then. I graduated from Northern Illinois University

12

he remembered, everyone spoke so well and so knowingly about his friend

Professor Bill Humbane and his wife Maria. Christian is now working on a

PhD in theology at Drew University.

The Friday sessions were marked by the juxtaposition of INUMC with the

IndyPopCon convention, which brought in young people interested in popular

culture – computer gaming, science fiction and fantasy, and so forth. Young

people walked around brightly and boldly dressed as their favorite characters. I

saw a “My Little Pony” with mane and unicorn horn, a Dalek (from Doctor

Who), and various warriors from computer games. On the other hand, at the

INUMC, we only had people dressed with Christ and figuratively wearing the

whole armor of God.

It was interesting though at lunchtime to watch the folks from one

conference intermingle with the folks from the other. INUMC had arranged for

a fleet of food vending trucks to be available outside the convention center. A

Christian rock band played. It was all very pleasant.

I skipped the business session on Friday to watch a movie, When God Left

the Building. This documentary compares the internal dissension and turmoil

of a church in upstate New York with the precipitous decline of the Kodak

company. The company failed to respond to a change in the market – the

transition from film (with a focus on quality) to digital cameras (with a focus

on immediacy) – and actively discouraged innovation within the company that

would have met that transition, and so it went bankrupt. The church was

lethargic, inwardly focused, and lukewarm about Christ and his message. The

movie centered on the divisive politics about their current minister. The movie

also brought in examples of churches that became church where people were –

relationship ministries. One started a ministry in a bar to create something

similar to a coffeehouse ministry but to people who would not go to a

coffeehouse. Another started a street ministry for homeless people. The movie

will be available in the fall.

INUMC is always interesting for the displays and exhibits. Various

missions and ministries have booths. The folks at the Lebanon Children's

Home (formally the Indiana United Methodist Children's Home) were excited

that someone from BCUMC was there. They could not say enough about how

much they appreciate the socks that BCUMC sends each year and how much

they delight in having Ladies Missionary members deliver them. The Home

will celebrate its100th anniversary in 2015. They want to visit churches to

celebrate. They would like BCUMC to be one of those churches.

In my report I used a Latin term to describe Christian's relationship with

Africa University. The term is in its masculine form. The first person to tell me

the feminine form of that term will get a prize. In my report I talked about

Bishop Palmer's message. The first person to tell me the two men mentioned in

the text on which he based his message will get a prize.

I thank the people of BCUMC for the opportunity to attend the Annual

Conference on their behalf. I hope I represent them well. -Ralph Rohrer

School class. When she quizzed the students (Jackie Arnold, Anna Fleming

and Olen Shepard) about what they have learned in Sunday School, Anna

Fleming answered: “How important God is to us.” Pam reminded the students

of some of the lessons they had enjoyed, including a favorite that included

sound effects of a thunderstorm!

BILL MOTTER, 34 Bill Motter, 34, was received into Heaven by

his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday,

June 11, 2014 after a brief struggle with acute

leukemia. Bill was from Richmond, Indiana. He is

missed by parents Dave and Deb Motter, brothers,

sisters, 2 children and their mothers, extended

family, and friends. Bill had an upbeat personality

and enjoyed reading, basketball, Colts football,

music, fishing, his Bible, and anything Irish.

There was a memorial service at College Park

Church, Indianapolis at 11am on June 23rd

.

Our deepest sympathies to Bill’s family and

friends, and his cousin Ryan Davidson (wife:

Jamie).

Bill’s name will be included on the in-memory-of list with the socks

collected and donated to the Lebanon Children’s Home in 2014. A donation

will be made from BCUMC in Bill’s name to the Gideons. One Gideon placed

Bible has the potential of reaching hundreds and hundreds of people. Some

of those people’s lives will be changed for the better by reading Bill’s Bible.

VOW RENEWAL: RYAN & JAMIE On May 31st Ryan & Jamie Davidson renewed their wedding vows at Buck

Creek United Methodist Church. The ladies who stood up with Jamie were:

Lisa Presley, Jessica Rector, Stephanie Napier, Booke Chinn and Stacey

Winger. The men included Dave Gant, Johnny McGwin, Frank Matthews, Jay

Killian and Heath Presley. Jim Davidson Jr. officiated the ceremony. We said

our vows as the sun set and filled the sanctuary with beautiful light! A call to

Christ was offered in the ceremony. We not only recommitted our lives to

each other but Jesus as well. All of this was done in celebration of 5 years of

marriage. Jamie was walked down the aisle by her little brother James Martin.

Cake was homemade by Stephanie Napier. Thanks to Lisa & Heath Presley

for your help decorating the sanctuary. A big thank you to all who attended

our vow renewal, it was beautiful!

STEPPING IT UP Replacements were in order for the outside lights and carpeting at the

church’s front door. Thanks to our Trustees, this was accomplished! Thanks

to Bill Miller, Fred Merkel and John Metro for doing the work. Thanks to

Trustees Chair Retta Whiteaker for seeing the need and getting it into the

works. When it comes to the old lights, they had come to the point of

randomly working or working when they weren’t supposed to! The old carpet

had served well, but was just worn out. That’s a good thing! Think how many

feet tromped up those steps and through those doors, to worship Jesus, the

light of the world!

meeting! Thanks to hostesses Jan Prosser & Lorena Poore.

We are fed by the Word of God! We are pruned by the Holy Spirit! We
