(safe moment, cues for aging related conditions, etc.)
• Self evaluation of participants experience
• Utilization of The Senior Fitness Test
Four Fitness Levels
Athlete - (Advanced Level) - Do you train almost
every day, compete in a sport, or do a physically
demanding job? Higher intensity, low impact workouts.
More challenging strength and conditioning portion.
Floor work included. Exercise will help build reserve
and maintain level of fitness, and provides conditioning
for improving performance in competition or in
strenuous vocational and/or recreational activities.
Additional programming will be sport/activity specific to
improve performance in a desired area.
Active now - (Intermediate Level) - This class is for
individuals who are physically active at least twice a week and
seek to improve their health and well-being. Classes include
moderate intensity, low impact exercise. May include
moderate strength and stretching exercises. There will be
optional floor work. Class will help to build reserve and
maintain the level of fitness to live an active, independent
lifestyle, continue working in a chosen profession and/or
participate in a wide range of recreational activities. Class will
concentrate on muscular strength, endurance and flexibility,
joint range of motion, balance, coordination, agility, and
cardiovascular endurance.
Just getting started - (Entry Level) - This class is
for beginners or those returning to exercise. Class
includes basic steps, gentle pace, lower intensity.
May include seated or standing light strength and
stretching exercises. Class will help maintain and
improve physical function to remain independent
and prevent illness, disability or injury. Focus will be
on increasing and building reserve in muscular
strength, endurance and flexibility, joint range of
motion, balance, coordination and cardiovascular
endurance.
Need a little help - (Chair Fitness)- This class is
for those wishing to exercise while seated. Class
includes rhythmic movement, range of motion,
strength, and stretching exercises. Class will help
maintain or improve physical function for basic self-
care. . Focus will be on muscular strength and
endurance, joint range of motion, balance and
coordination

Evaluation of Class Content
– Development of new or additional classes and/or content (e.g.balance, flexibility)
– The Elsie Stuhr Center staff has developed many classes to improve the health of individuals with chronic medical conditions.
• DIP (Diabetes Intervention & Prevention)
• Fibromyalgia Fitness class based on research from OHSU
• Better Bones and Joints for those diagnosed with osteoporosis and arthritis
• Essential Balance and Mobility class aimed to reduce and prevent falls
• Breast Cancer Recovery class based on the new ACSM and ACS guidelines.
75% of participants are able to either maintain or improve their functional fitness levels in all six measurements
25% of participants are 65 years and younger, 40% are ages 66-75, and 35% are ages 75 years and better
We have approximately 15,000 fitness class visits a quarter with over 1000 individuals enrolled in fitness classes last year
We hold over 100 fitness classes a week for adults ages 55 and better
All of our fitness staff have additional certifications in teaching/training older adult fitness
51 % of our participants have been participating for 3 years or more

The following can be used as a guide to the type of fi tness class you may be seeking. Instructors can also do an assessment to make sure you are in the correct class level. If you require assistance to participate in a fi tness class or would like inclusion services, contact Tina Malcolm at 503/629-6342.

hand strength and agility, arm strength, shoulder and hip range of motion, quadricep strength, shin muscle strength, ankle strength and range of motion. Focus will be on muscular strength and endurance, joint range of motion, balance and coordination.
