QUICK REVIEW:
Stretching 101
![Page 8: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
WHAT IS DYNAMIC STRETCHING?
• Also known as “moving stretches”.
• typically performed in a warm up to warm up the
muscles and stretch them to prepare for the
exercise ahead
• reduce injuries.
• Great to improve functional range of motion
Examples include:
Arm circles
Light jog
Side to side lunges
Hip circles
![Page 9: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
What is Static Stretching?
• means to “hold a stretch”.
• done at the end of workout to help
improve flexibility and aid in recovery.
• can be held in a challenging but
comfortable position for a period of time,
usually somewhere between 10 to 90
seconds.
Examples include:
Splits
Quad stretch (kick heel to bum and hold
with hand)
Laying on back and holding knees to chest
![Page 10: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
WHAT IS PASSIVE STRETCHING?
• means to use some outside assistance to help you achieve a
stretch.
• could be your body weight, a strap (like the tie on your bathrobe),
leverage, gravity, another person, or a stretching device.
• You relax the muscle you’re trying to stretch and rely on the external
force to hold you in place.
IMPORTANT: Be Careful!
There is always the risk that the external force will be stronger than
you are flexible, which could cause injury.
![Page 11: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
WHAT IS ACTIVE STRETCHING?
• Means you’re stretching a muscle
by actively contracting the muscle in
opposition to the one you’re
stretching.
• You do not use your body weight, a
strap, leverage, gravity, another
person, or a stretching device
• Different than dynamic as you are
not moving.
![Page 12: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
FOAM ROLLING
• form of self myofascial stretching.
• Can be done using a foam roller, tennis ball or
even your hands.
• Can be done as a dynamic warm up to warm up
the muscles or as a cool down.
PNF STRETCHES
• Propioreceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)
• Usually, PNF is performed with the help of a
partner.
• Different ways to do PNF: Contract relax, contract-
hold relax, etc
![Page 13: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

THE WARM UP:
What is a warm up:
Using a warm up is a way to prepare your body for physical
activity.
Different types of warm ups:
• Passive warm up
• General or non-specific warm up
• Specific warm up
• Dynamic warm up
![Page 15: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

BODY OF THE CLASS
The main event!
The training portion of the workout and should be more
intense then the warm up or cool down portion.
The body of the class is just as important as the warm up
and cool down but for different reasons.
• Portion where you are breaking down muscle tissue to be rebuilt
leaner and stronger
• Building up cardiovascular systems and heart
• Burning the majority of calories throughout the actual session
![Page 18: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
BODY OF THE CLASS DIFFERENT TYPES • Cardiovascular or endurance training
• Strength Training
• Balance
• Flexibility
This area of the workout will vary greatly from person to person
depending on fitness level and goals.
![Page 19: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

COOL DOWN TIME
WHAT IS A COOL DOWN:
Cooling down after your workout allows for a gradual recovery of heart
rate and blood pressure.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COOL DOWNS:
• Mimic movement
• Static Stretch
![Page 21: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
PURPOSE OF THE COOL DOWN:
• Get the blood flowing freely back to the heart
• Bringing the heart rate back down to about 100-120
beats per minute
• Reduces the lactic acid build up
• Reduce possibility of injury
• Always have a consistent “closer”
![Page 22: FITNESS SESSION 6...FITNESS SESSION 6: What we are going to cover REVIEW TYPES OF STRETCHING: • Dynamic, Static, Passive and Active WARMING UP: • Types of warm ups and why they](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071214/60430c807aec6836af65182d/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
