SUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIESProvide children Hand out 1 (The Eat-well plate)

The Eat-well plate shows the different types of food we need to eat – and in what proportions – to have a well balanced and healthy diet.

It's a good idea to try to get this balance right every day, but you don't need to do it at every meal. And you might find it easier to get the balance right over a longer period, say a week.

Eating healthily is about eating the right amount of food for your energy needs. In Britain most adults are either overweight or obese. This means many of us are eating more than we need, and should eat and drink fewer calories in order to lose weight.

However, it doesn't apply to children under the age of two because they have different nutritional needs. The Eat-Well plate

Provide children with Worksheet 1 (The Eat-well plate)The children will work individually to accurately draw and colour an item(s) of food in each section of the plate. The children could be instructed to choose their favourite foods from each section or foods which they would like to taste in future.

The children will have opportunity to present their Eat-well plate to the rest of their class. The children will be able to state the foods which they have chosen, and why?

Plenary – Allow the class to refer back to the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria for this lesson and decide if each of these have been met.

Extension task

Children could create another plate which could be eaten at a different time of the day, to the first plate they created. The children should use a completely new selection of foods to complete the task.

SUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Fruits place on the Eat-well plateThe children should be shown Handout 2 as a class, and spoken through it explaining what each fruit is. Children should be encouraged to guess and ask questions. The children should be shown fruits on interactive white board or other resource, as a whole and also internally after being sliced in two, to show them how different fruits can be on the inside.

The Class teacher should offer children opportunity to explain their experiences and preferences of fruit, and praised when a positive choice of choosing and enjoying fruit is displayed.

Children could be quizzed on fruits, what do you think it will look like inside?

Why should we eat fruit?

Fruits contain many vitamins, antioxidants, some minerals, and many enzymes which are needed to keep our body healthy. Not only this, eating fruits helps in many ways to stop us getting unwell.

Individual task - The children will be asked to draw fruit which they know or have learned about during this lesson. There will be space for 6 fruits to be drawn, which all children should be able to complete individually; some may require support through the class teacher or peers. More able children can be asked to complete using trickier or less common fruits.

Children will have an opportunity to present to the class or to a small group, to explain what they have chosen and why they have chosen them. Extensions: The children, who can complete the task correctly, can be asked to complete it again with a different set of fruits. This will be more difficult and may

require some more support, from the class teacher or peers.

There will be a bowl which the children can choose to fill in any way, with as many or as few fruits as they wish. The children should aim to complete the task individually; some may require support through the class teacher or peers. More able children can be asked to complete in greater detail, adding in pips, shapes, rind etc
