Management of ChangeManagement of Change (MOC) is a procedure used to proactively manage changes that have the potential to impact safety or the process within a plant. Evaluating new techniques for improving MOC approval procedures can have an impact on plant efficiency. Historically, upgrading obsolete products or replacing existing process control equipment had been delayed or abandoned due to the extensive paperwork involved in completing a complex MOC approval sheet.

BackgroundFisher™ easy-e™ brand control valves are found in almost every industry and have 40-plus years of service history. Fisher easy-e ED/EWD and ET/EWT valves are available in sizes ranging from NPS 1 through 12x8, while larger sizes of NPS 12 through 24x20 are available in the EU/EW family of valves. Emerson Process Management has moved these larger size valves under the easy-e brand and has adjusted the offering to better suit customers’ needs. The larger sizes will now be known as “easy-e valves.” The purpose of this guide is to simplify the transition from existing EU/EW valves to new easy-e valves.

Contained in this guide are two sections, the first contains questions and answers and the second compares easy-e valves to EU/EW valves. The first section helps users complete management of change (MOC) approval documents when upgrading to easy-e valves. The second section helps users better understand the differences and similarities between the EU/EW valves and easy-e valves. This section also demonstrates how it is much easier to work with easy-e valves and how they have been optimized to fit more applications.

Question & Answer Checklist1 Q: Does the proposed modification cause any changes to the piping and

instrumentation diagram (P&ID)?

A: Yes. The NPS 20x16 short neck easy-e valve is 58.7 mm (2.31 inches) taller in height when compared to currently installed NPS 20x16 short neck EU/EW valves. The term ‘short neck’ refers to the height of the neck of the valve and is dictated by valve travel. For the NPS 20x16 valve, short neck includes valve travels up to and including 203 mm (8 inches).

2 Q: Does the proposed modification change process chemistry, technology, or operating and control philosophies?

A: No.

3 Q: Does the proposed modification change how the existing plant is operated?

A: No.

3

4 Q: Does the proposed modification change process flows?

A: No.

5 Q: Does the proposed modification change existing pressure relief cases?

A: Yes. Flow capacities have been increased and lowered for some valve constructions which may impact pressure relief systems depending on plant/process design. Flow capacities for easy-e valves are published by Emerson Process Management in Fisher Catalog 12 Section 1, which is available from your local Emerson Process Management sales office.

6 Q: Does the proposed modification change the process description?

A: No.

7 Q: Have the codes and standards to which the new equipment was designed changed?

A: No.

8 Q: Does the proposed modification change the materials of construction, such as a change in material form (cast, forged, or alloy)?

A: Yes. Valve trim (plug, seat ring, cage, and other process wetted parts) materials have been changed and assigned new trim designations. Trim materials for easy-e valves are published by Emerson Process Management in the Fisher Large ED/EWD and ET/EWT Valves Product Bulletin (D103554X012).

In addition, the availability of valve-to-bonnet bolting materials for CF8M valve body material constructions has been changed. Both SA-193-B7 stud and SA-194-2H nut body-to-bonnet bolting and SA-193-B8M stud and SA-194-8M nut valve-to-bonnet bolting were previously available for all EU/EW valve constructions having CF8M valve body material. For easy-e valves having CF8M valve body material SA-193-B7 stud and SA-194-2H nut bolting is not available. For easy-e valves having CF8M valve body material SA-193-B8M stud and SA-194-8M nut bolting is not available in CL600 NPS 16, 20x16 and 24x16 valves, and all NPS 20 and 24x20 valves. Fisher easy-e valves offer an additional bolting material to fill this gap, which is SA-453 Gr 660A studs and nuts.

9 Q: Does the proposed modification introduce new equipment items that require periodic predictive maintenance?

A: No. The new equipment items will require the same periodic maintenance as required by the previous equipment items.

10 Q: Does the proposed modification change existing operator training requirements?

A: No.

11 Q: Does the proposed modification introduce new equipment items that require spare parts, training manuals, maintenance procedures or training to teach the maintenance department how to maintain them?

A: No. Maintenance procedures will be the same as those for EU/EW valves and no additional training or training materials will be necessary. Documentation for training/maintenance can be obtained by contacting your Emerson Process Management local business partner or sales office.

12 Q: Does the proposed modification introduce new equipment items that require spares or obsolete spares for existing equipment?

A: New spares will be introduced for easy-e valves. These new spares, may or may not be compatible with existing EU/EW valves. Please contact your Emerson Process Management sales office for further investigation into compatibility of spares across equipment. Spares for existing EU/EW valves will be available for a period of 10 years from the date of manufacture of the original valve. After this period, spares will no longer be available.

13 Q: Does the proposed modification permanently remove the spares for existing pieces of equipment?

A: Yes. Valve trim (plug, seat ring, cage, and other process wetted parts) materials have been changed and assigned new trim designations. These material changes have resulted in changes in operating temperature limits in some constructions. Trim materials and temperature limits for easy-e valves are published by Emerson Process Management in the Fisher Large ED/EWD and ET/EWT Valves Product Bulletin (D103554X012). Flanged end connection valve body maximum temperature limits have been reduced for WCC, WC9, and CF8M materials as described in the table below.

Comparison of EU/EW to easy-e Valves Fisher easy-e valves are essentially the same as EU/EW valves, but with a few enhancements and additions. Travels and features were consolidated so that inventories could be effectively created and managed for these valves and their spare parts. This will help to lower lead times in ordering replacements. In addition, the maximum temperature limit was increased in the ET/EWT easy-e valve (previously EUT-2/EWT-2) from 232°C (450°F) to 316°C (600°F) to cover a broader range of temperatures. The following subsections will compare the two types of product lines in the three major areas of nomenclature, materials of construction, and features..

NomenclatureThe goal of introducing easy-e valves is to reduce complexity and make ordering easier, when compared to EU/EW valves. The official name of EU/EW valves is now the “easy-e”. A summary of nomenclature changes is listed below.

The previous higher temperature limit that came standard with the EUT/EWT is now an option in the easy-e ET/EWT valve. In more detail, the EUT/EWT construction used a seat ring that is bolted into the valve body to extend the service temperature limit above 232°C (450°F). The new easy-e construction is able to utilize the same threaded-to-cage seat ring as the ET/EWT with a new High Temperature Seal (HTS1) option featuring PEEK anti-extrusion rings to extend the service temperature limit above 232°C (450°F).

ConclusionThe elimination of EU/EW valves and the introduction of easy-e valves will not affect EU/EW valves currently installed in plants, with the exception of ordering spare parts. Spares for existing EU/EW valves will be available for a period of 10 years from the date of manufacture; however, some spares for easy-e valves will be compatible with EU/EW valves, while some will not. Fisher easy-e valves are available in several new sizes, features, and materials, in addition to the previous EU/EW valve offerings to cover a wide range of customer application needs. In summary, easy-e valves are easier to order and cover a wider range of applications.
