Column
By President Joe Gaynor
Firearm Safety IsNo Accident.
ObituaryThe Holmesburg Fish and Game ProtectiveAssociation would like to offer our condo-
lences to the family of John Cannon on the
passing of his Mother in-law in February 2015John is one of our directors Again, we would
like to offer our condolences to John and his
family on her passing.
I’ll start off this month with a reminder that ifyou haven’t paid your 2015 dues, now’s the
time. A ten dollar per month late change will beassessed after April first. I also want to remindeveryone that the friends of the NRA dinner is3/31/15 the last Tuesday in March. Tickets areavailable NOW. You can see Mike Hamilton,John Lanzara, Gene Sullivan, yours truly, to namea few. There’s usually someone at the club whocan hook you up with tickets. The event is heldat Canstatter’s 9130 Academy Rd, about 10minutes from the club. The doors open at 5pm,dinner is served at 7pm. There’s a cash bar.Events include, live and silent auctions, raffles, door prizes. You can win firearms, hunting, shooting, fishing gear, NRA themed stuff, andmuch more. The proceeds of this event go tosupporting the junior programs at the club. Overthe years, our junior divisions have benefittedsignificantly from this event. Your support isencouraged. Plus it’s a good time and hey, youmight even take home some prizes. If we canget you to come out once, you’ll come back yearafter year. It really is a good time. It getsa bit difficult trying to find something to writeabout each month. Writing this column mightbe the single worst part of being club president. This month I went looking for inspiration thrulocal news stories. I didn’t have to look far tofind something relevant to firearms and firearmsafety. Four months ago there was a shootingincident at a police training facility in Montgom-ery County that resulted in the death of a rookiestate trooper. The story was back in the newsrecently because the shooter was criminallycharged two weeks ago. If you haven’t readthe story, you would think that some rookiescrewed up while making some rookie mistake. You might be surprised to find this is not thecase. The shooter was in fact a 20 year vet of
the State Police, and has more than 10 years’experience as an instructor. According tothe Philly Inquirer I’ll quote “On Sept. 30, TrooperKedra was one of five troopers sitting around atable at the Public Safety Training Campus inPlymouth Township. Trooper Schroeter wasdiscussing the trigger mechanics when he pulledthe trigger on his duty-issued firearm, the Dis-trict Attorney’s Office and the state police saidin a joint statement. The weapon fired, and abullet struck Kedra in the abdomen. He diedabout an hour later at a trauma center in Phila-delphia.” WHAT??? I point this story outjust to demonstrate how someone with so muchexperience can become complacent and makemultiple mistakes at the same time resulting in atragic incident. This guy was no rookie, yet in amoment of sheer stupidity managed to commit 4or 5 rookie mistakes all at once. I’m pointingout this story in an effort to remind every mem-ber that we all need to be on our game 100%anytime we’re handling firearms. I know manyof you have put your guns away after huntingseason and are waiting out the cold wintermonths before dragging them out for some fairweather range time. I suggest you review theclub’s range rules and standard firearm safetypractices before heading to the range. For thoseof you who are new to the game, the club offersseveral NRA 1st steps programs at reduced cost.If you’re unsure of yourself, or feel you coulduse a refresher, you’re welcome to sign-up forthese courses. You can see Gene Sullivan, clubsecretary John Kevlock, or myself for details. Iknow it’s a bit of a hokey tag line, but so true.Firearm safety is no accident. Let’s keep it
that way!!!

We finally had a chance to take a trip
up to Potter County to do some ice
fishing. Our first day out on Hammonton
Lake wasn’t great. But on our second day
we hit Beechwood Lake where the fishing
was excellent. I caught a total of 30 nice
trout. The majority of them were in the
range of 14-16 inches. We’re hoping to get
another chance to head back up before the
ice melts. By Patrick B Clarke

Our first shoot is scheduled for March 22,2015 we will be shooting paper targets
at 50 yards. These targets will be off the benchof the monkey pole and off hand, we mayeven have a novelty target in there, and thatcould be set up at any yardage the 25 yardtargets will be all shot off hand. We will alsohave a pistol target set up at 25 yards. All pis-tol shooters that shoot a black powder pistolat one of the shoots, you must have a loadingStand and only load one shoot at a time. I willtry to have a loading stand on hand for shoot-ers that do not have one. These are fun shootsand we want everyone to have a good time ifyou have a black powder gun bring it downand we will show you what to do or if you donot want to shoot you can come on down andwatch everybody else and see how they do it,you will see a lot of shooters shooting differ-ent guns and loading these guns their way.But one thing for sure they are all doing it theright way and a safe way. Safety is our toppriority we do this to protect all shooters andany spectators that are watching the shoots.Anyone interested or want more informationon the shoots call me at (267) 968-6564 By Patrick B Clarke
When I put the newsletter together I haveto wait for all the articles and the scores
to come in by the time I get everything to-gether and move everything around so it willfit and get it ready to be sent off to the print-ers. This takes to the end of the month andsometimes the 1st or 2nd of the fallen month. Ithen send it by email to the printers by thetime the printer prints it then folds it and sendsit off to the Postal Service to be mailed out inbulk by standard mail. This takes approxi-mately 24 to 48 hours. I know some of ourclub members do not receive our newslettertoo late in the month and I know some thatreceives it in less than 2 weeks. I don’t reallyknow why it takes that long I tried to find thisout before but couldn’t get the answer in thefuture I will try get the paper put together alittle earlier so I can get it out to our club mem-bers in a reasonable time. I will also try againto find out why it takes so long. By Patrick B Clarke

A man and his wife moved back home to
Cork, from London. The wife had a
wooden leg and to insure it in Britain was
£2000.00 a year! When they arrived in
Cork, they went to an Insurance agency to
see how much it would cost to insure the
wooden leg. The agent looked it up on the
computer and said to the couple, ‘•39.00.’
The husband was shocked and asked why
it was so cheap here in Ireland to insure,
because it cost him £2000.00 in England!
The agent turned his computer screen to the
couple and said, ‘Well, here it is on the
screen, it says: *Any wooden structure,
with a sprinkler system over it, is •39.00.
