Dear Friends of Mercy,

We are getting so close to the finish line on our 30-month expansion and rejuvenation project that you can feel it in the building. And you can see real progress in the many phases and facilities that have already opened. Our new front entrance has received rave reviews, and access to many parts of our campus have already significantly improved. Over the next couple months as our construction partners add the finishing touches, we will notice more evidence of our focus on making Mercy Hospital Jefferson even more centered on the patient experience.

Our construction project and many other patient-centered programs are supported by contributions from our community through the Mercy Health Foundation. Your donations support programs and clinical services to help ensure long-term viability for health care in our region. We are fortunate to have a Foundation Board with local business and regional leaders who work together for our community. They are committed to delivering specialized health care services closer to the homes of our patients.

We hope you find the information in the following pages a testament to our on-going commitment to provide health care that embodies our values of dignity, excellence, justice, service and stewardship.

As Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy said, “who we are together is as important as anything we will ever accomplish.” The collaborative efforts of donors, Foundation Board members, corporations and foundations enables us to embrace Mercy’s heritage while continuing our pursuit of having a relevant presence in the future.

Thank you to everyone who supports Mercy Health Foundation. Your leadership guides the way health care is provided in our community, and your generosity ensures that we can meet the needs of our community today and for years to come.

Sincerely,

C. Eric AmmonsPresident, Mercy Hospital Jefferson

“As the Sisters before us, we bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus, through our compassionate care and exceptional service.”

Women with a Mission Jefferson was started in 2016 and currently has 10 founding members.

In October, new members met at Petit Paree restaurant in Festus to celebrate this new group and discuss their strategy for the upcoming year.

Other highlights from the year include Women with a Mission Jefferson members joining St. Louis and Four Rivers members for a December holiday cocktail party and ornament exchange, and an evening of wine, cooking and fun at the Kitchen Conservatory in February.

In early 2018, members will vote to allocate their membership dues back to Mercy Hospital Jefferson.

If you are interested in joining this dynamic group of women, please contact Angela Brennan at [email protected] or at 314-251-3447.

Events

16th Annual Chaplains’ Auction

Money raised for the Chaplains’ Fund through the Annual Silent Auction helps hundreds of patients each year by purchasing prescription medications and offering emergency transportation. This type of support could not happen without your help. In 2016, the Chaplains’ Auction raised over $21,500.

Piano Mania

On November 20, 2016, Dr. Mark Spurrier and friends hosted the Piano Mania benefit concert at the Rickman Auditorium. Patrons were treated to an afternoon of dueling pianos played by some of the region’s most talented pianists. Familiar favorites like “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Railroad Rhythm” kept guests on the edge of their seats. With over 400 tickets purchased, the event raised more than $25,000 for Mercy Health Foundation Jefferson. Proceeds from this event will support programs and clinical services which help ensure long-term viability for health care in our region.

Mercy Health Foundation Jefferson Golf Tournament

For 32 years, the Jefferson Golf Tournament has provided philanthropic support to improve our community’s quality of care. This year, proceeds supported oncology and cancer care programs and services to enhance the care we provide. The 2016 golf tournament raised $51,680.

The Pathway to Employment program at Mercy Hospital Jefferson was formed during 2015-2016. This project involved a collaborative partnership between Mercy Hospital Jefferson, Jefferson County Developmental Disabilities Resource Board / NextStep for Life, Vocational Rehabilitation and local area school districts.

Mercy’s Pathway to Employment program provides an intensive training program for students with developmental disabilities who are in their last year of high school. The program strives to help these young individuals build the necessary skill sets to obtain long-term employment, either at Mercy or with other community organizations. The specific goal of the program is for these individuals to obtain employment by the end of their high school graduation year.

This program aligns with Mercy’s priorities of promoting dignity and inclusion for all people, while continuing to provide health care and exceptional service to the community.

Mercy Health Foundation Jefferson received a $15,000 grant from the Jefferson County Developmental Disabilities Resource Board which provided start-up funds to purchase equipment, supplies, and specialized materials for the program. Pathway to Employment allows Mercy to reach a broader population of students and will therefore serve more young adults from our community.

This past year Pathway to Employment had four students graduate. Three of the four students obtained employment, with two of the students, Alex Lang and Andrew Hergenroeder, finding their permanent pathways to employment at Mercy Hospital Jefferson.

Alex joined the Environmental Services team in December and hasn’t stopped smiling since. His responsibilities include keeping the floors and carpets clean in the first floor hallways and in several other areas including the Emergency Department, and the stairwells in the Medical Offices. Alex was a student at Grandview High School when he began working at Mercy. “Alex’s attention to detail and his enthusiasm stand out for all to see. He is a great addition to the EVS team,” said Brian Walker, Environmental Services Manager.

Pathway to Success

Andrew joined the Facilities Management team after graduating from the Pathway program in May. He was a student at Seckman High School when he was introduced to the construction crafts through the NextStep program.

“Andrew has been a welcome addition to the Facilities Department,” said Facilities Management Director Rick Moravec. “He has enthusiasm with his approach to work and is very energetic in carrying out his tasks, a real bias for action. He is a valued asset in helping Facilities deliver excellent service.” Among the many tasks Andrew is asked to complete are changing filters in patient room heating and cooling units and maintaining the appearance of visitor and patient parking lots each morning. Andrew and Alex have been outstanding additions to the Mercy Jefferson team.

Andrew Hergenroeder identifies and replaces stained or broken ceiling tiles and light bulbs throughout the hospital.

Alex may be most recognizable to other co-workers when they see him vacuuming carpets.
