On behalf of the talented staff at WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio, I am pleased to share this report with the community and our supporters.

As you will see throughout this summary, our commitment to quality news and information continues. And while the core of WUWM’s programming may be from NPR®, we are proud of the reporting from our talented team of journalists and producers in Milwaukee.

Their efforts were recognized with more than thirty awards in various national, regional and local competitions including a national award from the Radio Television News Digital Association for our Project Milwaukee series on black male incarceration. You’ve also heard more of their work on NPR programs, including Here & Now where WUWM has been designated as a collaborating station.

This work is supported by the generous contributions of listeners, corporations and Milwaukee area foundations. This year, we saw increased contributions from all of those sources. Exceeding our community fund raising goal allowed us to finish the year in the black despite increased costs in program acquisitions.

We are seeing an evolution in the way stations like WUWM meet the needs of its audience. While FM radio won’t go away anytime soon, we note that distribution on the Internet and other digital platforms (iPads, smartphones and more) is becoming even more important. Social media is the way in which people are discovering our content. This year, we recommitted to expanding our offerings online and wuwm.com’s new responsive design allows easy access on whatever device you are using.

We will continue to embrace new technology but never at the expense of producing the high quality content which has become the hallmark of what WUWM does every day of the year.

With your continuing support, WUWM will remain well positioned to serve its role as an honest broker of information so that our audience is better informed.

MURROW AWARDThe Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awarded WUWM the national Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding News Series (large market radio) for Project Milwaukee: Black Men in Prison. This prestigious honor is one of the most respected in the broadcast industry, and represents WUWM’s relentless pursuit of excellence in journalism.

Over more than seven months, beginning in November 2013, WUWM explored Wisconsin’s high rate of black male incarceration, through expert analysis and personal stories. WUWM’s Newsroom and Lake Effect reports and interviews focused on the reasons for the high incarceration rate, the impact on the community and solutions. The series included two special community forums, which WUWM co-hosted with Milwaukee Public Television. The two news organizations collaborated over the course of many months to offer complementary reports on this complex issue.

“Project Milwaukee: Black Men in Prison was an important project, which put a spotlight on a major issue in our community,” said Dave Edwards, Director and General Manager of WUWM.

WUWM and the other winners were recognized at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City on October 12, 2015.

SPECIAL SERIES

BLACK MEN IN PRISON: ONE YEAR LATEROne year since WUWM began an in-depth series on the state’s high rate of African American male incarceration, WUWM checked in with a few key players on the efforts to reduce the numbers.

SENIOR HOUSING OPTIONS & CHALLENGESSenior citizens have lots of options these days when it comes to where to live. There are numerous choices of new housing for older adults throughout the metro area, including specialized units. In a two-part series, WUWM examined the options and challenges facing seniors.

INNER HARBOR RESTORATIONMilwaukee’s Inner Harbor was once home to 10,000 acres of wetland. Today, just a minuscule remnant remains and it is slated for restoration. Susan Bence reported on the effort to restore the land in a special three-part series.

FOLLOWING A FIRST-YEAR MPS TEACHERFor one year, WUWM followed Dan Graves to learn what it’s like to be a new teacher in the large urban district. Graves has been teaching second grade in a Spanish language classroom at Fratney, in the Riverwest neighborhood.

LIFE’S VOICESOver the holiday season, WUWM reporters headed out into communities to talk with everyday people making a difference. The annual series, entitled “Life’s Voices”, profiles people striving to make Milwaukee a better place to live. In 2014, WUWM profiled six such individuals.

WISCONSIN SUPREME COURT ELECTIONWUWM continued its in-depth election coverage with a three-part series on the race for Supreme Court justice between incumbent Ann Walsh Bradley, and Rock County Circuit Court Judge James Daley.
