Who we are

Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Welcome to the UCL Investment Society, one of the largest societies at UCL and the number one go-to for everything related to finance, business and consulting. Our mission is simple: we believe that top students deserve top opportunities - and we are here to provide them.

A passion for success

Since our inception in 2001, we have helped hundreds of students sharpen their skills, prepare for interviews and secure their dream internship at companies such as J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Blackrock & McKinsey and Co.To do so, we organise the most prestigious events on campus such as the UCL Finance Conference and put in all possible effort to make our members more employable. This includes organizing the largest mentorship scheme across the UK.

A desire to innovate

We are extremely free in everything we develop, and welcome any new ideas about how we can improve. As one of the fastest growing societies, from the largest at UCL, you are key to bringing in new ideas and improving our events.

Why become a First-Year Representative?

Every year, there are approximately 20,000 undergraduate students at UCL. Less than 2.5% of those are part of a society committee, and only a few top students secure a position at leading societies that work with the most prestigious companies and people in the world.

For us, the most important reason to become a First-Year Representative is that you will be an active part of the UCL campus community. We see our First-Year Representatives as an asset to the committee, and pride ourselves on actively developing your skills with the long-term vision that you go on to secure more senior leadership positions next year.

For you the most important reason is to take advantage of a truly unique learning opportunity - one where you are surrounded by, and learn from, some of the most ambitious students and industry leaders. You will be working on the biggest events, the hottest parties and the most prestigious projects, such as UK’s number one mentorship scheme and the biggest conference in EMEA.

As a First-Year Representative for our society you will:

• Organise the most prestigious events at UCL• Give your CV a competitive edge by adding a position at one of the

biggest finance societies in the UK, known to all important financial institutions

• Liaise with our sponsors, which include the likes of Goldman Sachs, Bloomberg, Credit Suisse and many more, thereby building your network with the world’s top institutions

• Grow an invaluable network with like-minded, talented and ambitious students across UCL

• Improve your chances of securing a leadership position in the 2019/20 UCLIS Committee

• Learn the most important skills needed to ace any interviews and internships, including teamwork and leadership skills

What we look for

We look for talented, ambitious, dedicated and hard-working students who are always willing to learn and who will always go the extra mile in providing the highest quality of work for our members. All degrees and different levels of experience in finance are more than welcome and encouraged - we simply aim to get the best UCL students collaborating together in order to bring the best events on campus and creating the most value for our members.

Being a First-Year Representative means you will be working with all UCLIS committee teams on a wide variety of tasks. Therefore, the ability to be flexible, adaptable and always eager to get involved are traits we value highly.

The only case in which technical skills will make you stand out is if you have a special interest in the Marketing, Communications and Technology team. Even then, students who do not have the necessary technical skills will be taken into consideration, and applications judged fairly, based on their demonstrated experience and desire to learn.

What does a First-Year Representative do?

Being a First-Year Representative for a society as big as UCLIS is an extremely rewarding experience. In order to maximise your exposure to our activities and harness your skills as much as possible, you will rotate through our seven departments and work on a variety of fun, unique and challenging tasks. Doing so will also enable you to get to know the entire committee from executives to the president.

Marketing, Communications and Technology

Our Marketing, Communications and Technology team is responsible for designing and spreading all UCLIS promotional materials (banners, leaflets, Facebook covers, videos, website, shirts, pens etc.) as well as any other IT resources.

As a First-Year Representative, you will learn marketing essentials such as graphic design basics or how to develop and maintain a website. You will also be responsible for keeping our 5k+ member base engaged at all times on all our platforms, designing and publishing sponsor materials and for promoting the Investment Society brand image across campus.

The Marketing, Communications and Technology team is involved in every event, workshop or programme, which makes it both very demanding and an amazing learning opportunity. As a First-Year Representative in this team, you will be a part of every event, every workshop, every programme and every party we host. This makes it one of the best opportunities to get exposure across the board of our 7 divisions.

You are the face of the society and at the forefront of every event. As such, the position involves a very wide range of tasks which may require skills such as basic knowledge of graphic and video editing software. Any previous programming experience is useful but not required.

The Mentorship team is in charge of the UCL Investment Mentorship Programme, the biggest scheme of its kind in the U.K., with over 100 mentors. You will be responsible for making sure that our mentors and mentees have access to the very best resources, while organising large scale events to boost employability.

Since its formation, our mentorship scheme has been extremely successful with our members securing prestigious spring and summer internships, and as a FYR you will help ensure its success is continued. Understanding how crucial these internships are to a student’s start in finance or professional services, UCLIS has consolidated collective knowledge of the application process into our Mentorship Programme.

As a FYR, you will join our task of helping to demystify the first foray into these industries by providing guidance from application start to finish. All the while developing your own insight and skills to help you ace your own application!
