May, 2020Dear Friends of the Ticonderoga & Crown Point UMC,

I pray for Jesus Christ to fill you with his love and strength and perseverance as we continue in this time of lockdown from COVID-19. As we exercise caution in the washing of hands, wearing masks and gloves, and keeping ourselves physically spaced from one another we find ourselves seeking ways to cope as we wonder what the world will be like going forward.

We will be following New York State health and UMC Denominational guidelines about when and how we reopen our churches. When we know–you will know!

Some of you are using social media tools like Facebook and Zoom to stay in touch and join the children and I in worship and Bible study, while others are using the phone and mail. My hope is that the whole of both congregations will receive the newsletter this month. I would like to know how you are doing and what I can help you with as your pastor.

If you are like me in deeply stressful times we find ourselves falling back into old habits and behaviors that have helped us cope in the past. One day can blend into another and we can miss opportunities unless we become more intentional about creating healthy patterns and rhythms of life. One way of doing this is to create Spiritual Rules of Life. We do this by discerning where and what God is doing in our lives, then we discern through prayer how we are going to actively participate with God.

Rules of Life are pathways for us to experience deeper joy and meaning in our life with God. Exploring these pathways lead us to becoming more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Start with a paper and pencil and note where you are experiencing blessing and where you are feeling drained and despondent. Ask yourself what is God’s invitation as you review your list, and write down your findings. Then ask God to guide you to what you will do and when. Try these activities out for a week or two and see if they deepen your peace and joy, if not, drop them, and try something else. You will slowly develop a Rule of Life that works for you and God!

The time you spend with God will be deeply rewarding!

Now That’s A Bright Idea

As many of you know Ann has been in a battle with breast cancer for the last few weeks. I am happy to report that we finished up the treatment Friday April 24 and outside of being tired and cold she is doing fine.

So, Saturday was my first chance to go by the church in over 3 weeks. The electric bill was waiting for me. With no one in the building our bill went down by $150.00! Oil usage was down also but that is more than likely due to the warmer weather.

While I was away, Scott and Donnie have been busy and have locked the dumpster as we no longer needed weekly pick-ups. We have had problems in the past with outside trash being place there and since it will not be emptied on a regular basis it was thought it best to lock it. Good idea Donnie and Scott.

You may have noticed that Scott is back to using his phone for Sunday broadcasts. The equipment that we had purchased was not working as we had hoped. Scott has returned it and he is in the process of researching cameras and equipment that will fulfill our needs now and, in the future, when we can all again go to church.

As always if you see something that needs attention, contact Donnie, Pastor Scott or myself and we’ll do our best to “get ‘r’ done” or at least put it on the list!

Dear Church Family

I want to thank all of you for your cards messages and phone calls for my recent surgery. I am truly blessed to have such a loving Church Family.  They were all an encouragement.  I am letting Bill and Lisa spoil me a bit.

Thanks again,

Ann Westervelt

Cards sent out have been well received by the FUMC family.

Laurie Ward is displaying hers with a lovely gardenia, and says, “Happy Easter!”

ADDITION CONNECTION

Go away for three weeks and stuff happens. The foundation is poured and backfilled, the bell has been returned to the center of the garden, (although it needs to have its foundation put below ground level) and topsoil has been spread. Betty will be working soon at putting our lovely garden back together. Watch for pictures.

Now we wait for construction to start. When this will happen is anyone’s guess as rules about who can work and who can’t seem to change daily. “All good things come to those who wait.”

If you have any questions, please let Pastor Scott or myself know and we will try to answer or get the answer for you.

Bill Westervelt, Chair Trustees.

Thrift Shop NewsAs with most businesses, the Thrift Shop

remains closed to protect both volunteers and customers. We miss our friends and our

routines, but we must continue to take care of ourselves and others during these

unprecedented times.

Once we do open, we will transition into summer clothing – capris, shorts, bathing

suits and other items for the warmer weather ahead. We look forward to reopening, while still being mindful of everyone’s safety. Until

that time, stay healthy and take care.

Once we are all back to more regular activities, you will be able to donate items that are needed in the community- but please, hang on to them for now, and know that EVERYONE who supports the Thrift Shop is likely thinking the same way- Please give eventually donations extra attention- or the volunteers will be totally overwhelmed. The Thrift Shop pays for the trash removal, so if they get too many donations that are not able to be tagged and sold, it increases their costs, which is not anyone's goal, right? Thank you!Contact the office for critical needs- email is best, as we are not in the office to answer the

phone. [email protected]

The Ticonderoga Food PantryThank you all for your continued

support of the Ticonderoga Food Pantry.

Hours of operation: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 11am-

Noon.

Financial Donations may be mailed to the FUMC address- 1045 Wicker Street, Ticonderoga, NY 12883. Dollar for dollar, the Pantry can get more food than we can from their suppliers. If you wish to donated items, please email FUMC ahead of time to confirm the latest way to get things to the Food Pantry- coming during open hours may be good. They need toiletries, crackers, Lysol spray, and a few other things. I will monitor email from the Food Pantry and post a wish list on the FUMC Facebook page periodically. THANK YOU. [email protected]

Community Garden News Garden plots are available in the community garden

behind the church. Full plots- 10 x 20 feet/ $25

Half plots- 10 x 10 feet/ $12.50 Water available, soil will be tilled for planting, and

organic methods required. The Food Pantry welcomes harvest over-abundance.

Guidelines and Agreement available in the office. Please contact Betty Rettig via the office.

Also contact Betty if you are interested in helping to care for the Memorial Gardens. There is new

soil out there, and it’s time to think about digging in it- while maintaining good distancing.

Free Community Dinners will resume when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

May 3rd will be Community Day!

After the Facebook service at 9:00, stay online for a bit to chat!

Hopefully, we will have many of the Crown Point congregation participating. We can’t let a pandemic keep us from

reaching out to each other! The Food Pantry Shopping Cart is outside the

FUMC Front Doors for the weekend. Please feel free to leave a non-perishable item that

CANNOT be harmed by animals, like canned goods & jars.

Thank you!

HELPING OUR COMMUNITY

The Mission Committee is pleased to report that we have been able to use a special monetary gift that was given to us to aid our community. We wanted to show appreciation for the staff at Elderwood who is working very hard these days and also the residents who are unable to have visits from their loved ones. We purchased gift certificates for the staff for The Hot biscuit Diner, Burleigh Luncheonette, and Libby’s restaurants. We also purchased a gift certificate from the Dollar Tree for the residents to buy things they would like. All involved, the nursing home staff, patients and businesses were very pleased!!
