KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOINGThe “Conversations” we had in July and August were valuable for many reasons. First, Diana and I were able to meet more than 500 members of the church in small groups where we could have meaningful discussions. Second, we were able to hear what our members love about First UMC and what the church is doing well. One thing we heard over and over was the message, “We like the direction of the church so keep the momentum going.” In other words, we have a good church so don’t mess it up! That phrase, “Keep the Momentum Going,” has been ringing in my ears the last few weeks. There is something mysterious about momentum that is hard to explain. You can especially feel it in a sporting event. Something happens that turns the course of the competition and all of a sudden one team appears unbeatable. Once it gets going, it is hard to stop. It is hard to explain exactly why, but you can see the results.October is our Stewardship month when we invite the congregation to make financial commitments for the coming year. It will focus on how we can develop a healthy, spiritual relationship with money and possessions so we can break free to serve God and build God’s Kingdom. THE FORUM COVENANT AND COMMITMENT:To have an open dialogue about the places where our faith and our community intersect.

This exciting Forum will host new Chamber President, Jason Smith and Director of Economic Development, Trent Armbrust. (Trent is also a faithful attendee of First UMC!) Together, they will help us think deeply about the role of faith communities in economic development. Did you know that if a new resident establishes no roots other than their place of work, they are not likely to stay in a community? What can the “Community Church” do to help our greater community attract and keep innovative minds in the Little Apple? What is our role in welcoming and inviting both new and existing Manhattan residents into our family of faith?

REMAINING 2019 TOPICS FOR THE FORUMNovember 10 – Spiritual Direction 101

How can our faith guide our life decisions and direction? Pastor Melanie will guide us through a practical lesson on using our relationship with God to guide and ground our life.

December 8 – UM Leadership Institute Recap

Pastor Barry, Pastor Sarah, and Church Council Chair Karen Roberts will provide a recap of the October Institute geared at mapping and brainstorming the future of the UM Denomination.

In September we launched Building Better Moms and it has been fantastic! On the evening of our first meeting, I shared a devotional that I think might speak to parents all across our ministry and I'd like to share it with you:

Brené Brown tells a story about a village where all the women washed clothes together down by the river. When they all got washing machines, there was a sudden outbreak of depression and no one could figure out why. It wasn't the washing machines in and of themselves that was the problem. It was the absence of time spent doing things together. It was the absence of community.

Friends, we've gotten so independent. We're fine we tell ourselves even when in reality we're depressed, overwhelmed, lonely, hurting. "We're fine, we're just too busy right now" we say when days, weeks, months, and even years go by without connecting with friends. It's so easy to say we're fine even when it's not true.

We've become so isolated and it's hard to know how to get back. It's so hard to know how to even begin to build the kind of relationships our heart needs. And I think in our current culture, it's just not as organic as it once was. It's much more work now. We have our own washing machines. We don't depend on each other to do laundry, cook or raise babies anymore. Some of us are too scared to let our children run around our neighborhoods and play. When was the last time you asked a neighbor if you could borrow an egg or a cup of flour? We don't depend on each other for much of anything, to be perfectly honest.

Loneliness affects the length of our life expectancy, similar to smoking 15 cigarettes a day! Connection is legit! We've treated friendship as a luxury far too long!

So, be independent. Be proud of it. But be independent parents who have the courage to connect, courage to open the door to other good parents.

You can do it alone but you sure don't have to!

I'm here for you. My door is always open and so it my heart! Be brave. Connect!

Courtney
