FUMCCV Sermon Series

Stewardship Focus: Witness

Starting August 2nd

“This Epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament and

the very purest Gospel, and is worthy not only that every

Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy

himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. It can

never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt

with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes.”

This quote is from the great Reformer, Martin Luther. Our own

forefather, John Wesley, counts the Book of Romans as the

centerpiece to his understanding of God’s grace. The Book of

Romans is the clearest expression of Christian faith from the 1st

generation of Christians and if the Bible is the guide to Christian

belief, the guide to Christian behavior, and hope and

sustenance for the believer, then the Book of Romans stands at

the top of the list of the scripture that should be written on our

hearts. Our preachers will spend 7 weeks focused on teaching

and understanding this text that is central to our lives as the

people of Christ.

More Than Sunday Supper — Bible 201 The Book of Romans — taught by Pastor Brian

The Book of Romans is the clearest expression of Christian faith

from the 1st generation of Christians and if the Bible is the

Alpha/Disciple Kick Off Dinner

Sunday, August 23rd, 6pm

Join us for a catered dinner on Sunday, August 23rd in the Fellowship Hall as we kick off two of many classes being offered this Fall, Alpha and Disciple. Come and hear more information as well as the testimonies of previous participants and learn how these classes can further and strengthen your connection to the God of all life. So what are these classes about and what do they include? Disciple I study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. The first study in the program is DISCIPLE I: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a thirty-four week overview of the entire Bible. Morning and evening classes will begin this Fall 2015. The second study in the program is DISCIPLE II: INTO THE WORD INTO THE WORLD. This four-phase Disciple program is prepared for those who are graduates of DISCIPLE I. This study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture. Who Is Alpha For?

Alpha is for anyone. People come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course. How Much Will It Cost? There is no charge for attending the Alpha course. What Happens At Alpha?

Alpha gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks, including a one-day getaway. Each gathering begins with a meal or refreshments - a chance to get to know others. Then there is a short talk which looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week. This is followed by a time of discussion where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion and ask questions. Questions might include—Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?People usually stay in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. The emphasis is upon exploration and discovery in a relaxed and informal environment. Classes will begin the week of September 8th. Join us for dinner on August 23rd for a preview for a preview and more info! Email [email protected] for more information.

Commissioning of Rev. Francisco

Garcia-Velasquez

On June 20th at the Annual Session of the California-

Pacific Conference

of the United

Methodist Church,

Pastor Francisco

Garcia-Velaquez

was commissioned

as an Elder in the

United Methodist

Church. This is a

huge step

representing the

completion of

significant

educational

requirements and

also receiving

endorsements from

local church, district and conference boards. We

celebrate with Pastor Francisco!!

The Momentum Campaign Continues Thank you to the many of you who have

contributed to the Momentum Campaign

over the past year and few months. We have

accomplished the first two priorities: Trustee

Improvement Projects and Sanctuary Audio/

Visual/Lighting. We are actively finishing the

bid process for the third priority: Fellowship

Hall lighting/acoustical/audio/video

improvements. We expect the work will

begin in the late summer and be complete by the first of

October. This portion of the campaign has been fully funded and

that means the funds currently being collected are for the fourth

priority: Digital Organ. this project is already bid and is set in place to

be installed immediately following full funding. This would only leave

the final two phases of the project: Pew Refurbishment and Office

Space Refurbishment.

Again, thank you to those who have continued to honor your pledge

and for those who have made gifts outside of pledging. If you would

like to make a gift please contact Sue Meyer in the church office 619-

987-5315. She will be happy to assist you in making a gift towards the

Momentum Projects.

Elementary Summer Camp This summer, 10 Children and 5 Leaders from FUMC.CV attended

Camp Cedar Glen Elementary Camp in Julian, CA from July 5-11th.

The theme of the week was “Living in the Spirit.” Campers explored

their faith, learned about the Spirit, learned about who He is, and

what that means for them and their life. Campers enjoyed making

new friends, made lasting memories, sang songs at campfire, and

many have already said, "I can't wait to come next year." Thank

you for all the prayers and support that helped the children

experience a great week.

Youth Summer Camp In June, eleven students and five leaders from our church

spent a week at

Ponderosa Pines

Christian Camp,

nicknamed Pondo.

This was the first year

in many that the

Youth Group ventured

to a different summer

camp destination and

it could not have

been any more

well-received. Pondo was full of excitement from passionate

worship with music artists Urban Rescue, to inspired messages

with Darin McWatters, to friendly team competitions and

serious bonding time. At the end of the week, we all found it

difficult to say goodbye, not only to the friends we had made

at camp, but also to the life-changing experiences we

encountered there. However, it’s clear that those

experiences continue to have an impact on all of us. One

parent reached out to me and shared the following:“[Our

daughter] left a defiant, defensive, poorly behaved teen that

required weekly counseling to try and figure out how to

reach her. We were entering scary territory with her. She

came home calm, respectful, well-mannered, and actually

wanted to talk to [her father] and I…. This camp and the love

of Christ and the fellow campers, and of course the

wonderful youth leaders, helped to redirect her anger and

pain and set her straight – transformed back into a butterfly

with wings.” There is no doubt that camp changes lives and

we are excited to start planning and prepping for next year

already. Thank you to you, the congregation, for all of your

continued support of our youth programs and students. It is

such a blessing to have a community that encourages a

thriving youth program.

Prayer & Healing Service. On Sunday afternoon July 12th

our congregation gathered

together for a potluck to

welcome Pastor Francisco and

his wife Anika and to celebrate

the beginning of their ministry

among us at First United

Methodist Church of Chula Vista.

The pot luck fellowship time was

followed by a Prayer and Healing

Service. During the Service SPRC

Chair Leslie Bunker lead us in a

welcoming ceremony for Francisco where we prayed for Francisco

and pledged to support him and his ministry in any way we can.

Jason and the Crossing Band provided great music and Pastor

Brian lead us in corporate prayer. There were opportunities during

the service to light a prayer candle, take communion, be anointed

with oil and an opportunity for personal prayer with trained prayer

teams.
