SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30

From the Colemine

“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to

me.” Matthew 25:40

We have had a couple of the members of the church go to be with the Lord recently, Sam Mason and Walter

Sheets. They both in their own way reached out to the “least of these” Jesus is talking about in Matthew 25:40. Sam

did it by being involved in the community as a Judge and member of the Fort Scott City Council. Walter more low

key helping with Feeding Families and in other ways.

Both Sam and Walter did things behind the scenes that most people didn’t even realize or know anything about.

They didn’t do it for recognition or to be praised by other people, they did it because it was the right thing to do.

They both wanted to help other people.

We all have opportunities from time to time to help people who are the “least of these”. We can do it by helping

with Feeding Families, donating to the Beacon, to other organizations or just reaching out to neighbors in the com-

munity. There is no right or wrong way to do it as long as we do it. We have a lot of “least of these” in our commu-

nity. We can all help them in some way or another and do what Jesus told us to do to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Faith Builders in October We begin a new section in the Old Testament. Our Scripture will be from Genesis, 2 Samuel and Nehemiah. We will discuss “Signs of God’s Covenants” the first two weeks. The first Sunday we will cover “Making a Promise” and “A Sign of Agreement” on the second Sunday. The last three Sundays we will look at “Called Into Covenant with God”. In that section we will discuss the covenants God made with Abram (October 15), with David (October 22) and with the returned exiles (October 29). This is our time for fellowship and study. The coffee maker

is always on and we hope you will come join us. Ron Wood

Varrell and Shirley Forgey

Varrell and Shirley first knew each other when they were young teenagers, played kick-the-can, Andy-over, hide and seek after dark and went to dances at Teen Town on Tues-day and Saturday nights. Emily Kells sponsored the danc-es. Nearing their 67

th wedding anniversary, December 30,

they are still dancing every other week at the American Le-gion in Pittsburg.

Varrell L. Forgey, Jr. was born October 11, 1929 in Shel-don, MO. He was the son of Varrell and Rose Ruth Brown Forgey. His brother died when he was 54 of heart issues. His sister Ruth Arlene Eubank lives in the Phoenix, AZ ar-ea.

Varrell and his family moved to Fort Scott when he was 14 years old. He attended schools and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1947. He attended the Junior College then was in the Navy from 1948-1952. He then attended Kansas State Teachers College (Pittsburg State) and grad-uated with a degree in business in 1954.

Springfield, MO, was the birthplace for Shirley Louise White Forgey. She was born on October 20, 1931 to Virgil White and Ruth Hallie Buck White. Her older brother Bob White lives in Iola. Her brother Thomas Lon White died when he was 58. Shirley remembers the family moving a lot before settling in Fort Scott when she was in the 8

th grade. She graduated

from Fort Scott High School and attended one year at the Junior College.

Varrell and Shirley didn’t date when they were in high school. They started dating when Varrell was home on leave from the Navy. On a later leave, they decided to get married and drove to Huntsville, Arkansas for the ceremony because they didn’t have to wait three days for a license. Shirley says they didn’t elope because they took the whole family with them. They lived in Alameda, CA while Varrell finished his last two years in the navy.

After graduation from college, Varrell worked for the Western Insurance Company in Fort Scott for 10 years and was transferred to Phoenix, AZ. After a short time in Phoenix, he became an independent agent. He worked in Phoenix until he was 78. On retirement in 2007, he and Shirley moved back to Fort Scott.

Shirley worked a couple of years as a secretary at a church but was primarily a mother and homemaker. She and Varrell

have two children Brad and Melinda. Brad lives in Payson, AZ, and has three daughters. Melinda lives in Medina, OH, and

has two sons. In addition to their five grandchildren, they have 6 great-grandchildren but currently no great-greats.

Over the years, the Forgeys have enjoyed traveling, mainly cruises taking them to six of the seven continents. They also love to dance and were involved in a dance club in Phoenix for over 20 years. Shirley is an avid bridge player and has played in numerous bridge groups over the years. She is currently active in a ladies group in Fort Scott as well as XYZ at the church. Varrell has been in bowling leagues in the past. Both Shirley and Varrell helped with scouts when their chil-dren were involved.

Shirley has always been a Methodist and says she brought Varrell to the Methodist church. Varrell and the two children were baptized in the Fort Scott Church. Over the years, they have been active in the Scottsdale Methodist Church as well as Fort Scott. Varrell was the head usher in Scottsdale for 10 years and Shirley worked with missions for 20 years.

When asked about a special memory or event of the church, Shirley recalled the night she came to the sanctuary and prayed for her dad when he was very sick. “The doors weren’t locked then, except the office, and I was able to come in and pray for my dad.” She also remembers playing hide and seek at the church. Her favorite hymn is Amazing Grace.

Varrell says he has always loved the song, The Little Brown Church in the Vale, although we hardly ever hear it anymore. His other favorite hymn is How Great Thou Art.

Shirley and Varrell hope that the church can grow and get younger members involved so it doesn’t fade away. After living away for so many years, they state: “We are happy to be back in Fort Scott and be in our hometown and in our church. It is a beautiful church.”

Varrell, Shirley and their “guard dog” Pansy live at 115 Crescent Dr. in Fort Scott. Submitted by Jan Hedges
