plain thoughts

caring ministry

At this time Christianism is becoming more and more commercial. Its important

dates and traditions are getting mixed up with a lot of strange things—like for

example, the Easter rabbit—we supposedly use to enrich our Christian traditions

and make them more attractive, especially for children. But, at the same time we

often forget, and leave unknown the real stories; the truth is that many times we

find ourselves preferring the fake stories over the real ones. Brothers and sisters,

don’t forget Easter is about the event that changed history forever, the

resurrection of our Lord and Savior. HE IS RISEN! Because He rose from death, we have hope; hope that He

will resurrect and raise us to Him one day. This very day we remember and celebrate the cornerstone of

our faith; the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the fact that nobody could have denied. My prayer is God may

help us to be active and creative in telling others the real story of Easter.

God bless you

In Christ

An Easter Challenge

As a little girl I loved Easter. I always got a new Easter outfit which included a frilly dress, a white hat with a grosgrain ribbon, lacy socks, shiny new patent leather shoes and little white gloves. You see, I was the only girl in a family with three rough, tough brothers. I guess my mother took this opportunity to dress up her only daughter.

The Saturday before Easter, my siblings and I would dye Easter eggs. We would boil the eggs and let them cool. While they were cooling, we would get down little bowls and fill them up with vinegar and water. Then we would drop the little tablets of dye into the bowls and let them dissolve. Next, we would take Crayola crayons which had wax on them and write our names onto the boiled eggs. We would draw crosses and baby chicks on the eggs, then drop them into the dye. After about five minutes the eggs were colored and we would use a little wire spoon to scoop them out of the bowls and place each one into an egg carton. We were always so proud of our artistic creations.

On Easter morning, we would wake up at about 6 a.m. because we were so excited. We just knew that the Easter Bunny had stopped by our house and left some goodies for us. We would take our Easter baskets and dash outside to see if the bunny had eaten the carrot that we had left the night before. Yes, indeed, he found the carrot! Then the mad sprint was on—running around the yard claiming our own Easter eggs before someone else found them.

Church was fun because we got to show off our new clothes! We talked with our friends to find out what the Easter Bunny brought them. As a small child, it looked like there were hundreds of Easter lilies decorating the church. Um. . . and there was something said about Jesus. Does any of this sound familiar?

But at some point in my life, I began to realize that Easter is more than all of this. Easter is about the most important event in the history of humankind. It is about how God used his son to show us that life does not end in this world. Easter is about overcoming the greatest fear we could ever know. So this Easter I would encourage each of us to look past the eggs, dresses and parades and focus on understanding what it means to live in the light of Christ.

What can be lovelier than a Palm Sunday anthem? It’s one that adds the sweet voices of children to it. What

lovely and beautiful singing you shared with all who were in worship. I thank you for making the effort to

make both of our morning services. Please remember that there are no rehearsals this afternoon. Spend

time with your families or hunting eggs or some such activity.

Please keep Elaine, Tim and Peggy in your prayers. Recovery is nipping at their heels.

Looking ahead: Chancel Bells ring April 3; Youth Sunday is April 10; Children’s Music Ministry Party at

“enriquecer” nuestras tradiciones cristianas y hacerlas

visitantes de cerca y de lejos por lo que contienen;

espero. El pastor.

Discipleship is the practice of being a Christ-follower through worship, prayer, study and acts of compassion and justice found in

witness and service. We become disciples as we practice living out our lives through knowing, loving and serving God in the world.

THE LORD’S PRAYER No. 895

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

Amen.
