Lent is a forty day season based on Jesus’ forty days of fasting in the desert. It is a time of reflection and remembrance in which we acknowledge our own need for mercy and the needs of others around us through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Mite Boxes are a wonderful way to teach your family how to respond to Christ’s call to love him and serve those in need with generosity and compassion.
Each time you drop your change in the mite box, your family can reflect on the change Christ has made in your life and how to respond to Christ’s call to serve those in need with generosity and compassion. Money collected will fund St. Vincent de Paul’s Ministry of serving the needy in our area. Please return your Mite box during Holy Week to the baskets outside the church doors. ‘Good Father Gus’ Fr. Augustus Tolton was the first black American priest to be publically known in the United States. He was a former slave who was baptized and raised as a Catholic. He studied in Rome, was ordained on Easter Sunday at St. John Lateran, then celebrated his first Mass at St. Peter’s in Rome before returning to the United States to begin his ministry as a priest in July of 1886. Four years before his death he created a Black National Parish Church in Chicago that shared our patroness, St. Monica. Fr. Tolton’s St. Monica Church was created in 1893 to minister to the black Catholic community, with Fr. Tolton as the Pastor. He died in 1897 at the young age of 43 and his funeral was celebrated in his parish.
While I offer only a brief summary of his life, Fr. Tolton faced many obstacles on his journey to the priestly ministry— escaping slavery, being forced to change schools because of the color of his skin and general discrimination from white Catholic Americans. All of this in addition to the daily challenges and difficulties of priestly
ministry. Nonetheless, because of his work and the work of others, there are close to three million black Americans who call the Catholic Church their home.
Discipleship is a great theme for Lent. There are so many inspirational people that we can look to in our Catholic faith who are great examples of following Jesus, even when that meant personal sacrifice for them. As our Church continues to change and grow let us look to great people like “Good Father Gus” who challenge us to overcome obstacles and see the goodness of God in all people. ‘El Buen Padre Gus’ El P. Augustus Tolton fue el primer sacerdote Afroamericano públicamente conocido en los Estados Unidos. Él fue un esclavo quien fue bautizado y criado Católico. Lenten Stewardship: The Widow’s Mite In the Gospel of Mark Jesus tells us the story of the widow’s mite. Those with much were making large gifts to the temple, but they still lived in luxury and excess. Jesus observed a poor widow placing a small coin among the grand gifts. He acknowledged her gift as the greatest, since it came from her need not from her excess. She gave even beyond what she should have been able to afford. This is the kind of trust Stewardship demands of all of us. This kind of dependence is not easy, nor are we able to just decide to trust God so completely starting today. We grow towards this kind of trust. That is where the idea of setting a percentage comes in. Each year as we renew our commitments we should challenge ourselves as to whether we can do a little bit more. If we give 4%, perhaps we can give 5% or 6% next year. This approach to Stewardship can be very freeing. Paying God first feels good, and once deciding what to give to the Church and other charities, it’s easier to be free from the guilt and manipulation that so often occurs when we receive baskets of solicitations from a multitude of charities.

St. Vincent de Paul Warehouse Weekend St. Monica's next turn to volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul distribution center is Saturday, February 28. This is your
opportunity to help the poor! The 8am-12pm shift at the distribution center is not hard, and is great for teens looking for service hours. Volunteers should meet at the warehouse at 7:45am. The warehouse is located at 1201 E. Maryland Street, Indianapolis.

MEN’S CLUB
ABOUT THE MINISTRY
The St. Monica Men's Club is a social club for men of the
parish 21 years of age and older.
Men's Club members enjoy golf, cook outs, and service
to the parish. This club provides manpower for church
and school functions and sponsors the annual Lenten
Fish Fry fundraiser.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: Faith, fellowship, and a
willingness to serve others and the parish. Golf outings
are scramble-style, so while you don’t have to be a golf
pro, a good short game is appreciated.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Meetings are held every Monday during the Golf League
season. The ministry’s main fundraiser is the parish Fish
Fry held every Friday during Lent, at which many
volunteers are needed for two-to four hour shifts.
HOW THIS MINISTRY MAKES A DIFFERENCE:
Funds raised by the Men’s Club are used to support
parish youth and family programming, including
Vacation Bible School, St. Monica School, the teen Sister
Parish Mission Trip.
TO GET INVOLVED:
Male and female volunteers are needed to help serve at
the parish fish fry each Friday during Lent. For more

Holiday Bulletin Deadlines Due to the upcoming Easter holiday, some bulletin deadlines have changed! Please note that articles for the March 28-29 (Palm Sunday weekend) bulletin must be submitted before noon on Thursday, March 19. Articles for the April 4-5 (Easter weekend) bulletin must be submitted before noon on Wednesday, March 25. Thank you!
Parent Confirmation Session
The parents, not students, are invited to a meeting on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 PM in church regarding junior high students preparing for Confirmation this spring for the reception of the sacrament in the fall of 8th grade. Sunday Scripture Series – “Letters of Paul” Please join us in exploring and reflecting on the writing and teaching of the missionary apostle Paul during the upcoming Lenten season. The begins after the Sunday 6:00pm Mass (approx. 7:10pm) in the St. Augustine Room. There is no registration or cost for this session. Feb 22 - 2 Corinthians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians Mar 1 - Romans presented by Tony Stephanus Mar 8 - Colossians presented by Fr. Martin
Confirmation for Adults Prep Classes A six-week confirmation prep program for adults will begin on Sunday, February 22 for confirmation at Ss. Peter & Paul Cathedral on May 31. Sessions are Sundays, 4:30 - 6:00 pm. This Confirmation prep program is for adults or older teens who have at least eight years of religious education in the Catholic Church, attend Mass weekly, and are in good standing with the Church. Preparation includes a retreat and reunion after Confirmation. Confirmation sponsors should attend at least four of the six sessions, plus the retreat. Christian Men Committed to Change A program called Christian Men Committed to Change will kick off Monday. March 2, in PMC Room 1-2 at 6:45pm. The 14-week program is designed to help participants make big life changes in small steps. There is no cost or registration required. Church Renovation Plan Review You’re invited to the premier viewing of our Church Renovation Plan on Monday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Emmaus Center. The proposed plans cover repairs and changes to the inside and outside of the church building. For several years, our baptistery has needed significant repairs. The team also looked at projects that our original construction budget didn’t include, to see if any long-range plans could be implemented now. Staff and volunteers were guided by a liturgical artist, Bro. Martin Erspamer, OSB, of St. Meinrad Archabbey. Los Católicos deberían aprender no solo acerca de lo que es la administración, sino también cómo usar los dones que Dios nos ha dado.
En el futuro, esta columna se usará para ayudar a los feligreses de Santa Mónica a entender cómo ser mejores administradores en todas las áreas de sus vidas (ej, sus cuerpos, tecnología, vida cívica y cómo usar mejor esos dones a los que Dios nos ha llamado. Le proporcionaremos educación de administración, componentes de la administración de los jóvenes, foros de votación, daremos información, talleres para padres, y más. CERCA DEL MINISTERIO
El Club de Hombres de Sta. Mónica es un club social
para hombres de la parroquia que tienen 21 años o
más.
El Club de Hombres disfruta jugando golf, haciendo
parrialladas, y sirviendo a la parroquia. Este club proporciona
ayuda de estos hombres en las diferentes funciones de la
Iglesia y la escuela y patrocina el Pescado Frito de la
Cuaresma.
DONES ESPIRITUALES REQUERIDOS: Fe, convivencia, y
disponibilidad para servir a otros y a la parroquia. Los juegos
de golf son en diferentes estilos, así que no tiene que ser un
profesional, se apreciaría que venga a un juego corto.
TIEMPO DE COMPROMISO:
Las reuniones son cada lunes durante la temporada de la liga
de golf. La primordial actividad para recaudar fondos en la
parroquia es el Pescado Frito durante la Cuaresma, en el que
mucho voluntarios se necesitan de dos –a cuatro horas.
CÓMO ESTE MINISTERIO HACE LA DIFERENCIA:
La recaudación de fondos del Club de Hombres es para
apoyar a los jóvenes de la Parroquia y las actividades
familiares, incluyendo la Escuelita de la Biblia en Vacaciones,
la Escuela Sta. Mónica, el viaje de los jóvenes en la Misión a
Nuestra Parroquia Hermana.
CÓMO INVOLUCRARSE:
Se necesitan voluntarios hombres y mujeres para servir en la
venta del Pescado Frito cada Viernes durante la Cuaresma.

Prevista de la Renovación de la Iglesia Usted está invitado a la premier de la prevista del Plan de Renovación el lunes, 16 de marzo, a las 7:00pm en el Centro Emaús (Cafetería). La propuesta de este plan cubre las reparaciones y cambios en el interior y fuera del edificio de la Iglesia. Desde hace varios años, la fuente Bautismal ha necesitado reparaciones significativas. Teniendo en cuenta el trabajo, ha sido oportuno considerar otras necesidades de mantenimiento y posibles cambios para nuestras instalaciones. El Comité del Plan de Renovación de la Parroquia ha considerado las modificaciones para mejorar la Iglesia, capillas, el Nártex y la jardinería, para que la Iglesia sea acogedora y realce nuestra adoración. El equipo también vio varios proyectos que no incluyen el presupuesto original de la construcción, para ver si cualquier plan a largo plazo se puede implementar ahora. El personal y los voluntarios han sido guiados por un artista litúrgico, el Hermano Martín Erspamer, OSB, de la Archiabadía de San Meinrad. Pescado Frito en Cuaresma –los viernes a las
6:30 pm El Club de Hombres de Sta. Mónica ofrecerá venta de pescado fresco (¡sin congelar!) sazonado al gusto, así como espagueti y
pizza de queso . Y la novedad de este año—¡tacos de
pescado!
Clases de Preparación para la Confirmación
para Adultos La preparación para la Confirmación para adultos empezará el domingo 22 de febrero. Las Confirmaciones serán en la Catedral San Pedro y San Pablo el 31 de Mayo. Este es un programa corto para la preparación de la Confirmación y es para adultos y jóvenes quienes han tenido 8 años de educación religiosa en la Iglesia Católica, que asisten a la Misa semanalmente, y que se encuentran en buen estado con la Iglesia. La preparación consiste en 6 sesiones y un retiro, más una reunión después de la Confirmación. Las sesiones son de 4:30 - 6:00 pm los domingos. El padrino de confirmación de cada candidato debe asistir por lo menos a 4 de las 6 sesiones, más el retiro. Se requiere el 100% de asistencia para este corto programa. Viaje de la Semana Santa al Santuario de la
Pasión de Cristo en San Juan IN, el miércoles 1
de abril ($25) Los peregrinos pueden tener un encuentro con Jesucristo , al caminar a través de sus últimos días en la tierra, desde su Última Cena hasta su Ascensión al cielo caminando por media milla en un sendero. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a young Lutheran pastor in Germany, ordained in the troubled years following World War I. His theological development was deeply affected by a visit to Rome and the Vatican, and by a visit to the United States and experience in the worship of African-American Christians. As Germany fell under the spell of Hitler's leadership, Bonhoeffer moved beyond his role as pastor to the role of prophet, spy, and martyr, following his faith and standing against the evil of his day.
Dr. Ed Mitchell facilitates this workshop examining the discipleship of Bonhoeffer , who like Jesus, saw the nature of evil around him and took up his cross to stand against the Nazi terror. In him, we can see in this Lenten season, what following God's call can mean.
In this workshop, participants will learn: 1. How Christians in pre-World War II Germany, 50% Catholic and 50% Lutheran, faced the tension of nationalism, fear, and what it meant to love and follow God. 2. The path of one man from humble pastor and scholar to prophet and martyr as he stood for what he believed Jesus wanted. 3.A vision of how basically good people can be led into tremendous evil when they ignore God's calling. 4. How simple faith and trust in God's will can lead to deliverance, even in the face of death. 5. Ways to examine our own conscience and what it means to follow Christ in the face of our own cultural influences and pressures.
