Dear parishioners, Last Wednesday we started Lent receiving the Ash that re-minds us that we are ashes and ashes we will become. In this time of 40 days we enter the desert accompanying Jesus in prayer following the discipline of Lent. The three steps of our spiritual experience are traditionally: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a time of preparation to arrive on Easter Sun-day. Normally an agreement is an agreement between two peo-ple, in this case it is between God and humanity. So as this agreement is "divinely imposed" for which there is no room to negotiate on our part. So we accept or discard this agree-ment. If we accept, we have to fulfill God's expectations. This is part of what Lent is for us. In the second reading, Peter says "Christ suffered for us dur-ing those days that we call Lent. I ask you: Is not that what must be happening with us during this time of Lent? We can say that Lent is to strengthen our relationship with God. Peter tells us today that Noah's salvation was connect-ed with water, just as our salvation is connected with the wa-ter of our Baptism - The water that cleanses the original sin with which we are born to begin a clean life before the eyes of God. I remember a story of a child playing with his kite flying so high that he could not see it and a little friend asked him: How do you know if the kite is still flying up? And the boy re-plied "I feel like I'm being pulled". We do not see Jesus in heaven, but we need to feel that he pulls us, he calls us in many ways, he wants to bring us closer to him. Lent is a time of trial where we are called to practice pa-tience, sacrifice, discipline, hope and dedication in prayer. I invite you all to enrich our spiritual journey by visiting the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel during these 40 days to walk closer in the desert holding hands with Jesus. Blessings, Deacon Gustavo Arteaga

“DO NOT BRING US TO THE TIME OF TRIAL” (Matthew 6:13)

I know too well that I am weak and changeable. I know the power of temptation against the strongest virtue. While I hope in you, I

am sheltered from all misfortune, and I am sure that my trust shall endure, for I reply upon you to sustain this unfailing hope. Amen St. Claude de la Colombiere

SLK parish is keeping up with technology! Our parish pro-vides Online Giving as an electronic tool for contributions so you can give via the Internet. Online Giving helps you main-tain your giving even if you cannot be here at Mass. This also helps the parish streamline our cash flow especially dur-ing vacation times.

To sign-up is easy. Go to the parish website - stlouistheking.org, choose SLK church, and Online Giving to get started.

FUNDS NEEDED FOR RENOVATION PROJECT

The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would re-trace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a prac-tice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church.

Please join us every Friday in Lent, as we celebrate Mass at 8:00 a.m. in the Church, followed by the Sta-tions of the Cross.

PREPARING FOR EASTER

CONFESSIONS / PENANCE SERVICE

Many improvements have been made to the Parish facilities over the past few years, but the kitchen in the office building needs some attention. The kitchen is used by many groups who meet in the building or prepare for other Parish activi-ties. The stove, oven and counter tops can be renovated, but the dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer need to be replaced.

If you are interested in making a monetary donation, please drop-off your donation in the church office (do not put in the collection basket, please). The office staff will ensure the donation is noted for the kitchen renovation.

Thank you for your assistance.

SLK will hold the Lenten Confession and Penance Service on February 26th from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the main church. Priests will be available to hear Confes-sions in both Spanish and English.

PRAYER FOR ALL IN MILITARY SERVICE

As we begin our Lenten journey, may our fasting be a hun-ger for justice, our alms an offering of peace, and our pray-ers a reflection of humble and grateful hearts. CRS Rice Bowl is a Catholic Relief Services Lenten faith-in-action program. It offers opportunities for your family to en-gage daily in the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Reflecting on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war car-ried by our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes, we have an opportunity to also reflect on our roles in caring for them as members of our human family. Keeping them in our prayers and sacrificing our comforts to provide alms is part of our Lenten preparation. Please take one of the Rice Bowls available in the vestibule. They will be collected at the end of Lent. For additional information you may visit: crsricebowl.org.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION!

As you know, our St. Vincent de Paul conference provides food and financial assistance to the needy who reside within our Parish boundaries. SLK Parish collects monetary donations and food items, which it stores in the very limited space it has here. It does NOT provide clothing and does NOT accept clothing donations. If you have clothing to donate, please take it to a SVdP thrift store (3547 W. Thunderbird) or call SVdP for a pick-up (602 266-4673).
