IN OUR PRAYERS Please pray for the sick in our community that they may find comfort and healing in Christ, especially:

We the Church enter into Advent and the new liturgical year with a call for a watchful confidence. Our readings were origi-nally addressed to communities undergoing great loss and con-fusion. Jeremiah speaks confidently of God fulfilling the an-cient promises to Israel, even during a time of foreign invasion. Paul speaks of God leading the Church into holiness, while the community longs for the coming of Jesus. In the Gospel pas-sage from Luke, Jesus speaks of powerful signs and of great confusion to come, but emphasizes that we may look forward knowing that God brings not cause for despair, but hope. We celebrate Advent to remind each other of God’s faithfulness. We are to be watchful, to see how God is stirring up our world. God both disturbs our pride and complacency, and brings us healing and justice. We prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, confident that God indeed fulfills all these divine promises.

In daily life, it’s easy to simply focus on the here and now. Life can be complex and rapidly changing. It’s often plenty for us just to get through the day. Yet it seems that in Luke’s Gospel today, Jesus is asking his followers, and us too, to widen our focus and see a larger reality.

We are asked to observe not only the routines of daily life, not only the large forces of history acting upon us, but also God bringing forth the birth of a new creation. Jesus asks us to see beyond today’s troubles and watch God stirring up hope. We are to more truly see persons in need, those who experience violence, loss, or injustice. We are asked to see beyond the su-perficial during the Christmas shopping season, and to see Christ as ultimate Gift and gift-giver.

THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for jus-tice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and fam-ily of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes that an-nouncement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise.

Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s pa-rade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new‑fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising eve-ryone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Ad-vent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all crea-tion. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for cele-brating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season.

ALTAR SERVER MEETING

There will be on-going altar server training for new and current altar servers starting in December. The first training will be held Wednes-day, December 5th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the Church. The training is mandatory. If you have any ques-tions or if your child is unable to attend, please leave a voice mail message for Christina May at the Religious Education Office (562) 921-5179. You may also send an email to cmay@stlinus.org. New Dress Guidelines Starting Saturday, December 1st, all altar servers are re-quired to follow the new dress guidelines. Information regarding the guidelines can be found on the alter server bulletin board in the sacristy. New Schedule The December schedule is available in the sacristy. Sign-up sheets are available for the Christmas Eve and Christ-mas Day masses. Please sign up for the mass(es) you are available to serve.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Es más que justo empezar el tiempo litúrgico de Adviento con la Virgen María. Esta semana celebramos la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Esta es una fiesta especial para varios países latinoamericanos como Nicara-gua, Panamá, Paraguay y los Estados Unidos que tienen co-mo patrona nacional a la Madre de Jesús bajo este título. Esta creencia tiene siglos de ser discutida por teólogos cris-tianos como Ambrosio, Agustín, Buenaventura y Tomás de Aquino, pero fue solo con la Constitución Ineffabilis Deus del Papa Pío IX en 1854 que pasó a ser doctrina oficial de la Iglesia. La enseñanza de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Madre de Jesús insiste que María nació y permaneció sin pecado. Según el teólogo franciscano Juan Duns Escoto, María fue salvada del pecado desde el vientre de su madre Ana. De esta manera Jesús pudo salvarla no después de haber pecado como ha hecho con nosotros, sino antes de que ella hubiera pecado. La Inmaculada Concepción se hizo en vista de la venida de Jesús quien nos puede hacer inmaculados gracias al perdón y la gracia que nos ofrece.

The Parish Pre-Advent retreat on Saturday, Nov. 17 was well received. WAITING WELL Today we begin Lectionary Year C, when the Gospel

readings are frequently from the Gospel of Luke. Luke wrote for a community that wrestled with questions about what had happened and what had not (yet) happened. Some in the com-munity had anticipated the promised return of Jesus during their lifetimes. In today’s Gospel, Jesus does not offer a timeta-ble for his coming, but asks us to watch and wait. We can learn to wait faithfully, not knowing what will happen next, but liv-ing in trust. Advent is a time to learn again about waiting well.

Many of the events we most cherish in life involve waiting: the birth of a child, graduation, a new job, retirement. How we receive these events often depends on how well we have waited and prepared. Waiting well is not passive. We often work hard to prepare for life’s big events, both externally and in our hearts. We ready ourselves, but allow for surprises.
