Dear Parishioners,

Once again we have arrived at the beginning of a new liturgical year and we enter this year of grace with the Season of Advent. It is a time of grace upon grace where the Lord gives us his help in a new and deeper way because he loves us so much and wants us to grow in holiness. The Father delights in us his children and desires that we set aside these four weeks of Advent to celebrate and ponder Jesus’ coming into the world. In the beginning of Advent we focus on Jesus’ second coming when, “the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and glory.” The second coming of Jesus will be a time of great tribulation. It will be the time when the world will come to an end and there will be a new heaven and earth. Everyone left alive will be judged at that moment and some will be taken into the kingdom and heaven and sadly some into eternal damnation. The way we live our lives here on earth will determine where we spend eternity. In our Gospel today the Church gives us Jesus’ words reminding us: “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.” Jesus speaks these words to us, not to frighten us but to help us and remind us to “be vigilant at all times and pray…”

The other coming that Advent focuses on (later on in the season) is the coming of Christmas where the Word takes on flesh and God becomes Man. The weeks before Christmas generally go by rather quickly and for most people are extremely hectic. It is easy to lose track and not be focused on this great season of Advent when there is so much pressure on families. It takes a lot of discipline not to get drawn into what our culture or society views the Christmas season to be about, namely materialism and a gathering with family and friends. I am sure that our Lord wants us to have good things in this world and to be with family and friends at Christmas time but more importantly he wants us to open our hearts to his life and his love and to live the authentic life of a disciple of Jesus Christ. The Advent season is a time for us to get reoriented; it should be a time when we focus on the things of heaven and not the material things of the world. It should be a time when we spend more time in prayer, that is, more time alone with our Savior who took on flesh and become like us in all things but sin. The Church Fathers said that God became Man so that man could become God.

God has given us the gift of the Church and contained within her is everything we need for our salvation. He gives us this Season of Advent to draw us more deeply into the mystery of his great love for us; He sent his only Son into the world so that we would not be lost but rather he would share his life with us. Our readings today remind us that He will come again and that we should not fear that day but rather work at growing in holiness. The Father has given us, his children, so much and yet he wants to give us so much more. Be vigilant, pray more, be more charitable and forgiving, because the Season of Advent is upon us; the time of grace upon grace and our God will not be outdone in generosity.

Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us,

Father Ed

Administrator

Next weekend the Christmas Giving Tree will be setup in the Church. Gifts donated will be given to help needy families of Sussex County and will be distributed by Project Self Sufficiency. Thank you in advance for your generosity and helping those less fortunate to have a joyful Christmas.
