Guardian Angel Cathedral

The Beginnings of Guardian Angel Cathedral Guardian Angel Cathedral is unique not only for its magnificent windows, mosaics, mural and

architectural design, but also in its origin and history. Its beginnings go back to 1958, when the priests of St. Viator began the celebration of a 4.30 am Sunday Mass at various hotels on the Strip to accommodate hotel/casino workers and visitors. The present church became a reality in 1963 as “Guardian Angel Shrine.” When the Diocese of Reno became the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas in 1977, the Shrine was designated as Co-Cathedral of the Catholic Church in Nevada. In 1995 the Diocese of Las Vegas was established with Guardi-an Angel Cathedral as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Las Vegas.

Back in 1988, Guardian Angel Cathedral received an Indult (special permission) from Rome for this

Mass, due to the fact that approximately ninety percent of the participants in our Eucharistic celebrations are visitors from all over the world. To our local parishioners and numerous liturgical ministers, we sincerely thank you for your devoted and dedicated service to the people of God at Guardian Angel Cathedral.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading - We are the clay and you, O L , are the potter: we are the work of your hands (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7). Second Reading - God is faithful; by God you were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9). Gospel - Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37).

The Final Beginning Sanctuary Mural was created by Isabel & Edith Piczek. The artwork seen here is the kind of art which does not want to exist for its own sake. It wants to draw you into a passionately and deeply inner existence, step by step, from the dark original creation into the monumentally recreated world of Man’s Supernature. The Destiny of Man is to unfold in from your eyes, an unfolding which ends in happiness - your happiness. The real artwork is not made from glass, paint or tile. It is created within you-by you. A personal note by the artist

.GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God’s faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For “behold, you are angry, and we are sinful” (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God’s promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God’s might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to “rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you” (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God’s hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory. But God has a different plan: the Incarnation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

Celebrating the Liturgy at Guardian Angel Cathedral First Sunday in Advent B

Today’s readings contain several images: the faithfulness of those who suffer, even as they lament their predicament; the admonition to watch and wait; the expectation of the coming of the Day of the Lord. As trustees of the one who is coming, we live in the “in between” time of ambiguity and hope. The placement of these readings at the beginning of Advent shapes the context for understanding the entire season. They fix our gaze on the world of human pain and then moves beyond it to the hope of a brighter future. Lamentation and expectation find fulfillment in the Day of the Lord. - Dianne Bergant CSS Prelude: Come, O Long Expected Jesus Entrance: #806 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Readings and Psalm Response: #1091 Gospel Acclamation: #287 Creed: Inside cover of the hymnal Preparation of Gifts God of All People (solo) #495 Creator of the Stars of Night Sanctus: #290 Acclamation of Faith: #291 Amen: #294 Lamb of God: #294 Communion: Pasotrale on Nunc Dimits, G. WEEKLY CELEBRANT SCHEDULE

Because of the construction project, Daily Masses for this week and next will take place in Anderson Hall. This will begin on Monday, December 4 through Thursday, December 7th and Monday December 11 through Thursday December 14th. This will NOT affect weekend Masses or Mass on December 8th, but please be advised that there is not a private place for confessions available in Anderson Hall. The electricians will be installing our new lighting system and dimmer panel. For those who wish

to celebrate Advent in your home, the

Advent wreath can be placed in a

prominent place-your dinner table, your living room,

etc. Each week you light

an additional candle. During this

first week, this prayer by William G. Storey, excerpted

from A Prayer Book of Catholic

Devotions, from Loyal Press can be

used.

Advent Prayer All-powerful God, increase our strength of will for doing good that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming and call us to his side in the kingdom of heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever. AMEN.
