The Locum Writes

Welcome to the worship of God at Christ Church!

Our ‘worship’, or ‘reasonable service’ as the Epistle puts it this morning, is not just the time we spend in a church service, but everything we do with our bodies right through the week. We come here to ‘present . . . ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice to God’ at all times.

A special welcome to any visitors or newcomers. Please make yourself known to me at the door, and come with us across to the Hall for morning tea after the service.

This past week Vivien and I have been participating in the New Creation Teaching Ministry Summer School at Victor Harbor, along with 600 or so others of all ages, as we have been doing with our family for the last thirty years. The theme of the teaching was ‘God Is God and I Am Not God’—a great relief!

At the Summer School historian Stuart Piggin, of Macquarie University, launched a book I have been working on over the last three years or so, a theological biography of a friend, colleague and mentor of mine: A Quiet Revival: Geoffrey Bingham in Life and Ministry. Speak to me if you would be interested in obtaining a copy.

Yours in Chri3

Martin Bleby.

3

The People shall and for the entry of the Sanctuary Party.

℣ The Lord be with you.

℟ And with thy Spirit.

Then shall be said the Introit Sentence

O BE joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness. Ps.100, 1

Then shall be sung the hymn for the Introit.

191 O Thou who camest from above

All kneel. The Prie prays:

O UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we

forgive them that trespass again3 us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Then shall the Prie say, together with the People:

A LMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires

known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the

thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that

we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name;

through Chri* our Lord. Amen.

Then shall be sung:

Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy upon us.

Chri3e, eleison Chri*, have mercy upon us. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy upon us.

Then shall be said the Collect for the Day.

4

Let us pray.

O LORD, we beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy people which call upon thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and

power faithfully to fulfil the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the People sit for the Epile.

The Epi3le is written in the Twelfth Chapter of the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans, beginning at the first verse.

I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this

world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office; so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Here endeth the Epi3le.

Then shall the people stand to sing the Gradual Hymn

510 Lord of the home, your only Son

At the beginning of the Gospel:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

5

The Holy Gospel is written in the Second Chapter of the Gospel of Saint Luke beginning at the forty first verse. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

N OW his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem, after the custom of the feast. And when they had

fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom, and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Praise be to thee, O Chri*.

Then shall be said the Creed by Prie and People:

I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven

and earth, And of all things visible and invisible:

AND in one Lord Jesus Chri*, the only-begotten son of God,

Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light,

Very God of very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one sub*ance with

the Father, By whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our

salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Gho

of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified also for us

6

under Pontius Pilate. He su8ered and was buried, And the third day he

rose again according to the Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And

sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with

glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have

no end.

AND I believe in the Holy Gho*, The Lord and giver of life, Who

proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the

Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets.

And I believe one Catholick and Apo*olick Church. I acknowledge

one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the

Resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Then shall the People sit for the Sermon.

The Prie shall begin the O.ertory, saying this sentence of Scripture,

O BE joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness: and come before his presence with a song: for the Lord he is God.

Ps. 100, 1-2

Then shall the people stand to sing the Hymn for the O.ertory.

508 Lord of all power, I give you my will

Then shall be said the Prayers, the people kneeling humbly upon their knees.

℣ Re3 eternal grant unto them, O Lord.

℟ And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Let us pray for the whole 3ate of Chri3’s Church militant here in earth.

A LMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apo3le ha3 taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee mo3 mercifully to accept our alms

and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we o?er unto thy Divine Maje3y; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they that do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Chri3ian Kings, Princes, and Governors; and specially thy Servant ELIZABETH our Queen; that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: And grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and indi?erently mini3er ju3ice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. GIVE grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly admini3er thy holy Sacraments. AND to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we mo3 humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Chri3’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

8

Then shall the Prie say:

Y E that do truly and earne3ly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth

in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

Then shall this general Confession be made.

A LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Chri*, Maker of all

things, judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our

manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time,

mo* grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Again*

thy Divine Maje*y, Provoking mo* ju*ly thy wrath and indignation

again* us. We do earne*ly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our

misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden

of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, mo*

merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Chri*’s sake, Forgive us all

that is pa*; And grant that we may ever herea>er Serve and please thee

In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus

Chri* our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Priest, turning himself to the people, pronounce the Absolution.

A LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and

deliver you from all your sins; confirm and 3rengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everla3ing life; through Jesus Chri3 our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Prie say:

9

H EAR what comfortable words our Saviour Chri3 saith unto all that truly turn to him.

COME unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.

S t .

Matth. xi. 28.

SO God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end

that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everla3ing life.

S t .

John iii. 16.

Hear also what Saint Paul saith:

THIS is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Chri3

Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim i.

15.

Hear also what Saint John saith:

IF any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Chri3 the righteous;

and he is the propitiation for our sins. 1 John ii. 1.

A5er which the Prie shall proceed:

℣ The Lord be with you ℟ And with thy spirit.

℣ LiH up your hearts. ℟ We li> them up unto the Lord.

℣ Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. ℟ It is meet and right so to do.

Then shall the Prie turn to the Lord’s Table, and say:

I T is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everla3ing God.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of

10

heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

Then shall be sung

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of ho*s, heaven and earth are full of thy

glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord mo* High.

Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the

Highe*.

Then shall be said this Prayer:

W E do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord,

tru*ing in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and

great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the

crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is

always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the

flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Chri*, and to drink his blood, that our sinful

bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his

mo* precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in

us. Amen.

Then the Prie, anding before the Table, shall say the Prayer of Consecration.

A LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy did3 give thine only Son Jesus Chri3 to su?er death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself

once o?ered) a full, perfect, and suKcient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did in3itute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again.

HEAR us, O merciful Father, we mo3 humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Chri3’s holy in3itution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his mo3 blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, TAKE, EAT, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU: DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

11

LIKEWISE aHer supper he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

DRINK YE ALL OF THIS; FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS: DO THIS, AS OFT AS YE SHALL DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.

MOST humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy son Jesus Chri3, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

AND here we o?er and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that all we, who are partakers of this holy Communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction.

AND although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to o?er unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our o?ences.

THROUGH Jesus Chri3 our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Gho3, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Then shall the Prie sing the Lord’s Prayer, together with the People.

As our Saviour Chri3 hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to pray:

O UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy

kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass again* us. And lead us not

into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom,

The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

℣ The peace of the Lord be alway with you.

℟ And with thy spirit.

Then shall be sung the Agnus Dei.

O Lamb of God, that take* away the sins of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that take* away the sins of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that take* away the sins of the world,

grant us thy peace.

And a5er that shall the people, meekly kneeling, receive communion.

(Please note that we do not o.er intinction of the ho wafer into the Chalice.)

The Ministry of the Laying on of Hands and Prayer is offered in the Lady Chapel by Fr David Keay during the distribution of Communion. Please avail yourself of this Ministry of Prayer.

Then shall be sung the Communion Hymn

do3 vouchsafe to feed us, who have duly received these holy my3eries, with the spiritual food of the mo3 precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Chri3; and do3 assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the my3ical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everla3ing kingdom, by the merits of the mo3 precious death and passion of thy dear Son. AND we mo3 humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assi3 us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou ha3 prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Chri3 our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Gho3, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Then the Priest shall give this Blessing. Please kneel.

T HE peace of God, which passeth all under3anding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his son Jesus Chri3 our Lord: and the

blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Gho3, be among3 you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Collect, Epistle and Gospel for

THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

Near to the beginning of the year, we pray in the Collect for the doing of God’s will by God’s people. Both the perception to know what we ought to do, and the ability to carry it through, come from God, and we ask Him for both. Paul in the Epistle spells out what the proving or carrying out of this ‘good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God’ means in practice. Our ‘reasonable service’ or worship involves everything we do with our bodies, and must come not from the values of the world around us but from minds renewed and in lives transformed by Christ. This will cause us to have a humble and sober estimate of ourselves, and of our place with others in the body of Christ. In the Gospel reading we see the young Jesus putting God’s will—‘my Father’s business’—ahead even of his parents’ legitimate concerns, while remaining subject to them. In Jesus we see what it is for a human person to grow up ‘in wisdom, and stature, and in favour with God and man’.

THE CATECHESIS GROUP

‘Catechesis’ is basic instruction in Christian faith, such as may be outlined in a ‘catechism’. It has been necessary in every age of the Christian era, and is no less needed today.

The Catechesis Group at Christ Church North Adelaide will meet on Sundays in the Rector’s Office, between the two morning services. You can come to the 8.00am service, and stay on for the Catechesis Group, or come to the Catechesis Group and stay on for the 10.30am service. The Catechesis Group will last for ten months from February to November, with holiday breaks (see details in 2013 Parish Diary).

The Catechesis Group is for those who are newly come to faith, and have been baptised or are preparing for baptism and/or confirmation, and for those who desire to reaffirm their faith, or who are being admitted to the Anglican Church from another denomination.

The Catechesis group will be made up of such candidates, each one accompanied by a companion from the congregation. Using daily Bible readings, conversations with companions, and sharing in the group, together with participation in worship, participants will come to know the great realities of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Church and the Kingdom of God, and their calling and ministry within that. In this way participants can be set up strongly for a lifetime of Christian believing and living.

This begins in 2013 on Sunday 3rd February at 9.15am. Please make time to speak to the Locum Tenens, Fr Martin Bleby (0467 485 284) to register your interest—as a candidate, or as someone’s companion.
