into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended

into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the

communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of

into the presence of God. In preparation for worship, you are invited

to use this time for prayerful reflection.

“A Christmas Rondel" Charles Callahan

WELCOME [Please pass the friendship register down the row for each person to sign.]

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 148)

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and women alike, old and young together! Praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.

+HYMN 119

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” MENDELSSOHN

CALL TO CONFESSION Brothers and Sisters, why do we confess our sin? Because all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.

But why do we do it together? Because we are a community, a covenant people.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND SILENT PRAYER God of grace and truth, in Jesus Christ you came among us as light shining in darkness. We confess that we have not welcomed the light, or trusted good news to be good. We have closed our eyes to glory in our midst, expecting little, and hoping for less. Forgive our doubt, and renew our hope, so that we may receive the fullness of your grace, and live in the truth of Christ the Lord…(our silent prayers of confession)

KYRIE Merbecke

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON People of God, through the coming of Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate, the Lord has comforted and redeemed us! In Christ we receive the salvation of our God. Hear the Good News! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

[+You are invited to stand. For each hymn, please stand as the last line of the introduction is played.]

Today in worship we are invited to share signs of peace and reconciliation with one another as a response to God’s forgiveness in Jesus Christ. This act of worship is a tangible reminder of our unique calling as God’s reconciled children. We are called to be reconciled to one another and to be agents of reconciliation in the world. What a privilege! So take someone’s hand and say, “The peace of Christ be with you” – or reply “and also with you.” And as you do so remember: In this moment, you have been entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).
