    ANNOUNCEMENTS

    CALL TO WORSHIP

O give thanks to God, for our God is good.

God’s steadfast love endures forever! God is our strength and our Redeemer.

God is our Ever-Present help. The Hand of God has been victorious!

    Alleluia! Christ is risen!

*HYMN: “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” NCH #233 black

    EASTER PRAYER

O God, allow us to bask in the Easter Light.

Allow us to let you in to our sorrow-laden lives.

Allow us to recognize you breaking in

to our world of war, refugees, and incompetence.

    We sorely need a Savior.

We come to worship the Risen Christ.

Death is difficult for us; it robs us of hope.

Yet, this morning, You empty the tomb...

    We were not ready for the surprises;

    it’s been a long week …

    You come unexpected.

In the midst of darkness and death,

allow Your new light to dawn,

    the light of Everlasting Life.

  • Allow us as we contemplate Your mystery,

to accept the empty tomb of hope and resurrection.

    It is difficult to comprehend the tomb;

it is difficult to accept Your unwarranted love for us.

All mysteries are like that; they require faith.

Let us accept how we are loved,

what God is willing to do for us,

for we desperately need Easter. Amen.

*THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is

now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

SCRIPTURE READING: Acts 10:34-43 pg. 1710

ANTHEM: “Christ the Lord Is Risen Again”

    Philip W. Stopford (b. 1977)

Christ the Lord is ris’n again, Christ hath broken ev'ry chain.

Hark, angelic voices cry, singing evermore on high, Alleluia!

He who gave for us his lite, who for us endured the strife,

Is our Paschal Lamb today; we too sing for joy, and say Alleluia!

He who bore all pain and loss cornfortless upon the cross,

Lives in glory now on high, pleads tor us and hears our cry.

    He who slumbered in the grave is exalted now to save;

Now through Christendom it rings that the Lamb is King of kings! Alleluia!

    Thou, our Paschal Lamb in deed, Christ, thy ransomed people feed;

Take our sins and guilt away: let us sing by night and day Alleluia! Alleluia!

(Text: Michael Weisse, c. 1480-1534; trans. Catherine Winkworth, 1829-1878)

    MORNING PRAYER

    CONGREGATION’S JOYS AND CONCERNS

Dear Lord, our God, through our prayers,

    open us to your presence.

  • You have told us to forget the former things;

You have asked not to dwell on the past.

We know you are the God of our future,

a future we can imagine but cannot see.

For you are doing a new thing in our midst!

Your spirit springs up; help us to perceive

what You, our Loving God is doing.

Hear our prayers we offer through

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Fill us with your Holy Spirit …

    Revive our souls…

    and set us free! Amen.

Let us pray … SILENT PRAYER-PASTORAL PRAYER-CHORAL RESPONSE

    PRAYER RESPONSE: “Magdalena”

    Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

    Early on that Easter Morn Mary Magdalena came, forlorn;

What found she where our Lord was laid, but an Angel bright arrayed?

The Angel greeted her and said: “Woman, why weepiest thou?”

He is not dead, He is arisen from the dead, Jesus, who thou seekest?

“Mary,” Jesus saith to her, Mary turned and called him “Master,”

From then in very truth she knew Him, that he was Christ the Saviour.

SCRIPTURE READING: John 20:1-18 pg. 1685

“The Whole Bright World Rejoices Now”

    Michael McCabe (b. 1941)

    (“Hilariter” is Latin for “joyfully”)

The whole bright world rejoices now,

    Hilariter, hilariter,

The birds do sing from every bough,

    Alleluia, Alleluia.

Then shout beneath the racing skies,

    Hilariter, hilariter,

To him who rose that we might rise,

    Alleluia, Alleluia.

And all you living things make praise,

    Hilariter, hilariter,

He guideth you on all your ways,

    Alleluia, Alleluia.

To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,

    Hilariter, hilariter,

Our God most high, our joy and boast.

Jen Powers, FPC member, Sunday School teacher and

local business woman, will lead a conversation called

"Reflections On My Childhood in Saudi Arabia" at Soup

& Conversation Sunday, April 30. Where were you from

1973 – 1986? Jen was in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. From

the age of 7 through 20 she was growing up with her

family on an ARAMCO company compound in the

Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. She will share some of her experiences

growing up in this unique setting: exploring what it was like to grow up

in a country with sharia law, without freedom of religion or freedom of

the press and how it has shaped her world view today. She shares that

you will probably be surprised at how “normal” many of her childhood

experiences were even though they were happening on the shores of the

Arabian Gulf vs. the shores of Cape Ann. This, free and open to all, Soup

& Salad luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 30, 11:30 AM at the

First Parish Chapel, 1 Chapel Lane, Manchester, MA. To donate soup,

  • The Nominating Committee is looking for

volunteers! Because we are a Congregational church,

about the committees that serve First Parish? Would you like to serve on

a committee? Contact the Nominating Committee- Martha Gubbins,

Penny Lapham, Mary Lumsden, Jen Powers and Marianne Round.

We continue with a new selection for April; "Hillbilly

Elegy" by J. D. Vance. The Vance family story begins

hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were

"dirt poor and in love" and moved north from Kentucky's

Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty

around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their

grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a

conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward

mobility.…Amazon. We will meet on Monday, May 8 at Marianne

    Round's home at 7 PM.

“For where 2 or 3 are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst

    of them”. Matthew 18:20

Church on the first and third Thursday of each month, next

gatherings April 20, May 4 & May 18. We will start promptly at 6:00

PM and end at 7:00 PM. We will be praying in one accord, a form of

conversational prayer. Bring your concerns to the Lord whether they are

for Yourself, Family, Friends, Our Country, The World! You may pray

    along silently or pray aloud.
