A visitor is someone who drops by for – you know – a visit. People visit because they are interested in or concerned about someone or something. Visitors may or may not be expected. We visit friends in the hospital, we visit people in nursing homes. We visit museums, historic sites, towns and vacation spots. On the receiving end, we are usual- ly happy to see visitors, but there are times when unexpected visits catch us at inconvenient moments. No one likes to wake up from a nap in a hospital bed to discover that an unexpected visitor has been watching us breathe. And honestly, it is just as awkward for the visitor standing there trying to de- cide whether to wake us, leave a note, or just leave. A guest, however is a little different. A guest is someone we have invited to be the recipient of our hospitality. A guest is not only expected, but has been planned for. We go out of our way to provide for the needs of a guest by making him comfortable, providing refreshments and guiding him to all the places he needs to go. When we know a guest is coming, we spend extra time trying to anticipate that guests needs so our time together can be as pleasant as possible. Thats not to say that we dont extend a warm wel- come to both visitors and guests, but a visitor may be a surprise. A guest is expected, planned for, and intentionally hosted during their stay. As we continue to create a welcoming environment here at First UMC Ro- swell, our new Welcome Team will be very intentional about thinking of first time worshippers and activity attenders as guests, rather than visitors. We are going to do everything possible to prepare in advance for the arrival of guests: from creating a very visible and accessible hospitality area in the Nar- thex, to educating hosts, hostesses, greeters and ushers in the most effective ways to welcome newcomers, to guiding guests around the building, to bring- ing out the best coffee. We are going to practice radical hospitality in a big way! As you begin to notice some changes around the church, (“Hey! When did the coffee bar get moved?”) I hope you will enjoy and contribute to the welcoming atmosphere as much as those entering the doors for the first time. Company is coming! Lets welcome our guests. Pastor Tina As United Methodists this is our mission: to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I’ve been thinking about the difference between

“visitors” and “guests.” “What difference?” you ask?

Well, here are my thoughts.

A visitor is someone who drops by for – you know – a

visit. People visit because they are interested in or

concerned about someone or something. Visitors may

or may not be expected. We visit friends in the hospital,

we visit people in nursing homes. We visit museums,

historic sites, towns and vacation spots. On the receiving end, we are usual-

ly happy to see visitors, but there are times when unexpected visits catch us

at inconvenient moments. No one likes to wake up from a nap in a hospital

bed to discover that an unexpected visitor has been watching us breathe.

And honestly, it is just as awkward for the visitor standing there trying to de-

cide whether to wake us, leave a note, or just leave.

A guest, however is a little different. A guest is someone we have invited

to be the recipient of our hospitality. A guest is not only expected, but has

been planned for. We go out of our way to provide for the needs of a guest

by making him comfortable, providing refreshments and guiding him to all the

places he needs to go. When we know a guest is coming, we spend extra

time trying to anticipate that guest’s needs so our time together can be as

pleasant as possible. That’s not to say that we don’t extend a warm wel-

come to both visitors and guests, but a visitor may be a surprise. A guest is

expected, planned for, and intentionally hosted during their stay.

As we continue to create a welcoming environment here at First UMC Ro-

swell, our new Welcome Team will be very intentional about thinking of first

time worshippers and activity attenders as guests, rather than visitors. We

are going to do everything possible to prepare in advance for the arrival of

guests: from creating a very visible and accessible hospitality area in the Nar-

thex, to educating hosts, hostesses, greeters and ushers in the most effective

ways to welcome newcomers, to guiding guests around the building, to bring-

ing out the best coffee. We are going to practice radical hospitality in a big

way!

As you begin to notice some changes around the church, (“Hey! When

did the coffee bar get moved?”) I hope you will enjoy and contribute to the

welcoming atmosphere as much as those entering the doors for the first time.

Company is coming! Let’s welcome our guests.
