There seems to be no end to the

inspiration drawn from nature,

be it movement, light, mood,

color, or simply the joy of fresh air.

The varying interpretation of

subject matter reveals the artists’ ability

to depict similar scenery, while evoking

vastly different emotions. A river at

sunset to one artist may tug at the

viewer’s sense of sweet nostalgia, while

another artist may portray their river

scene as lonely, but hopeful.

A common thread that seems

to connect all of the works is an

artist’s use of light to communicate

the true spirit of the scene. The sky,

another dominate component in these

landscapes, creates a mood unto itself.

Often, beyond the literal translation of

the land, artists seek to unveil a deeper

meaning. Shadows, bursts of lights, the

slant of a tree—it’s in these details that

transforms a setting into a message.

John Brandon Sills believes his

work should adhere to a higher calling,

and hopes to inspire viewers to embrace

the spiritual aspects of the land.

“In my landscapes, I attempt to

communicate my perception of the

world around me, which I see as

an expression of Divinity,” he says.

“What I wish my painting to do

is assist the viewer in expanding

their own conception of the spiritual

to include truths that at first seem

impossible.”

Several works have been inspired by

the artists’ international and cross-country

travels, and others pull their greatest

inspiration from the view from their

back porch. Wherever the locale, artists

discover that they can relate as much to a

snow-covered mountain as they can to a

sun-drenched citrus orchard.

Artists who paint plein air find

themselves making nature their studio.

Many of the artists find that keeping in

step with nature’s perfect timing—the

rising and setting of the sun, the air

growing brisk at dusk, shadows shifting

beneath trees—is part of their task as a

conveyer of truth.

THE LURE OF THE

LANDSCAPE

Snow on Stockton Hill, oil on linen on board, 24 x 30”, by Glenn Harrington (see page 9) The artist describes painting as a continuous effort to, “relate our world to the spiritual-concrete imagery to abstract emotions.” His pieces range from $4,000 for small works to $40,000 for larger ones.

The path from the artists’ imagination

to the canvas also varies between artists.

Some begin the journey armed with

sketch pads and pencils, while others

let their paintings evolve through

continual layering of oil and color.

And in more conceptual landscapes,

the artist may rely on color, tone and

shapes to convey a feeling.

Artist Rob Vander Zee finds that his

true passion lies in the painting process.

“I get lost in my paintings and can

stay there for hours, creating, layering,

and allowing the painting process to

have a life of its own,” he says.

For Rich Bowman, his heart was

always with the countryside. Initially, he

was drawn mostly to sunsets as a form

of meditation. He often reflects on the

words of one of his first teachers, “Be true

to yourself and what you feel.”

Another innovation from

American Art Collector, we

proudly introduce this

Orange Light, oil on canvas, 24 x 18”, by Kathy Buist (see page 12)In this piece, the artist seeks to paint the rolling hills of the land as a gentle transition into the suggestion of soft,

sensual curves in the sky. Buist’s work ranges in price from $950 for small pieces to $9,000 for large works.

Inviting light

Everywhere he looks, Paul Youngman sees something to paint. Living in

California’s Napa Valley, rich with scenes of rolling vineyards, golden

hills splashed with oak trees and towering eucalyptus, there’s no shortage of

inspiration. In Whispers of Evening, Youngman has chosen a soft evening sunset,

highlighting the luxuriant vines and old eucalyptus trees with the last sun rays to

create an inviting scene.

PAUL YOUNGMAN

Youngman majored in Fine Art and Graphic Art at U.C.L.A., and became an

architectural and free-lance illustrator. After 20 years in the commercial art field,

he chose to expand upon his ability as a painter. Youngman’s paintings have

won wide recognition among serious collectors. He is a Signature Member of Oil

Painters of America and an Artist Member of the California Art Club.

Beyond the view

As a life-long cross-country runner, Richard Hall found great peace in

exploring the scenery during his long marathon runs. As a painter, he is

inspired by the brilliant natural colors, the shapes of the clouds, mountains and

streams and the beauty of the composition of the land. The viewer is drawn to

the quiet solitude and gentle spirit of each painting; transported to a time and

place free from clutter and distraction. Using multiple layers of tinted glazes,

his paintings have a translucent quality and luminescent finish that go beyond a

literal translation of the landscape.

RICHARD HALL

Richard Hall believes oil painting is a connection to the past. Born in 1952 in

Bradford, Yorkshire, in the industrial heart of northern England, Hall attended

both the Sheffield College of Art and the Kingston-upon-Hull College of Art,

receiving his bachelor of fine arts in painting in 1976. After he earned his master

of fine arts degree from Sussex University, Hall moved to the Southwest United

States where he pursued painting full-time.

Rising light

The painting August Sunrise, Canaveral National Seashore is a studio

rendering of a plein air landscape during which the light of sunrise was

rapidly changing. The colors created by the light set the perfect scene.

“The diffused light painted the early morning sky with a vibrancy that was

awe inspiring,” Garrish says.

MARY GARRISH Mary Garrish is an accomplished plein air artist. She travels to find new

landscapes regularly, and recently returned from a trip to Tuscany. She is finishing

a two year position as President of the American Impressionist Society and has

had numerous artist’s exhibitions, most recently in New York and Los Angeles.

Capturing a moment

“I’m passionate about painting,” says Andre Lucero. “I enjoy painting at

sunrise the most. This painting was done just as the sun was coming up.” In

Quiet Morning, Lucero says the sun, clouds and land were all cooperating. “All I

had to do was faithfully capture my response to the scene—no embellishment or

exaggeration was needed.” As an artist, Lucero says he’s more interested in being

a poet than a journalist, capturing the feeling of a scene being paramount.

ANDRE LUCERO

Andre Lucero lives and maintains a studio near Richmond, Virginia. He paints

landscapes and figurative works in oil primarily from life. He began his career in

free-lance illustration, producing works for numerous clients including The New

York Times, Playboy and U.S. News & World Report. But Andre returned to his first

love – painting. With his work shown in several galleries, Andre completes more

than 100 plein air paintings a year, capturing the beauty of the Mid-Atlantic states

and from travels abroad.

Seasons of celebration

Boggess braves weather of all seasons to paint his

surroundings plein air. In 10 August 2007, Boggess’s

subject is a river in West Virginia where he began the

paintings in the quiet of the early morning, layering paint

until the late afternoon when the water stirs a ripple.

1 August 2007 is inspired by the beauty in nature on a more

micro-scale, celebrating the detail of the budding flowers

as they integrate into the greater landscape. Winter in the

woods is the subject of 30 January 2007.

LYNN BOGGESS

Lynn Boggess is both an artist and a university

instructor. He received his bachelor of arts in art

education from Fairmont State University and his

master of fine arts in painting from Cranbrook

Academy of Art. He focuses on the beauty of nature;

showcasing his plein air landscapes exhibitions

throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Principle Gallery in

Storyteller

Whether it’s his landscapes, figurative work or striking

portraits, Glenn Harrington’s work seeks to draw

viewers in and captivate them by the story being portrayed.

He describes painting as a continuous effort to, “relate

our world to the spiritual-concrete imagery to abstract

emotions.” Influenced by Sargent and N.C. Wyeth, and

the painters of the New Hope School of Impressionism,

Harrington’s landscapes are highly sought after by collectors

as paintings that carry on and blend those traditions today.

Red Landscape II, oil on canvas, 28 x 31"

Merging with nature

Dennis Hartley works in stages, starting with less of a preconceived idea,

covering the canvas with simple forms and colors, and letting each

painting’s composition and personality gradually emerge. In Red Landscape II, strong bands of warm color have provided the base for carving out identifiable

compositional elements: water, clouds, vegetation, and a barn. Traditionally, the

barn would be a central focus, but in this work it merges with the land, and

serves primarily to define the edge of a body of water.

DENNIS HARTLEY

Born in 1948, Dennis Hartley earned a degree in architecture in 1972. He then

worked as an architect in France, Switzerland and the United States. Ten years

ago, Hartley decided to paint full time. He has been exhibiting ever since. Based

on landscape forms, Hartley’s style is expressionistic and interpretive, dancing the

margins between representational and abstract. His color palette is restrained,

and he seeks to achieve subtlety, depth and complexity by layering primary colors.

Hartley’s work has drawn praise from artists and collectors.

Beauty of simplicity

Gail Morris’ work is summarized

in the words of her teacher, artist

Wolf Kahn, “The landscape paintings

of Gail Morris are spare and elegant.

Economical divisions set off the near

from the far spaces. Color relations

are abstract and resonant. These

pictures are evidence of a sensuous and

celebratory response to nature, and to

life in general.” Morris seeks to bring

simplicity and sophistication to each

of her works, from her representational

landscapes, to the colors she abstracts

in her more contemporary paintings.

GAIL MORRIS

Gail Morris’ studies have connected her with a host of

noted artists, and her move to California began her

love for the California Impressionists. Today, her work

is heralded from a number of acclaimed collectors,

among them Guillermo del Toro, the award winning

writer/director of Pan’s Labyrinth, “Color and light form

the very core of the art of painting. Gail Morris takes

these principles to unexpected places. Her paintings

can be both precise and expressive and her control of

the medium is astonishing.”

Creating mystique

Kathy Buist’s Azul aims to create a visual drama, a play of strong,

urgent forms dominated by a fresh and vigorous light, creating a

sense of mystery. In Orange Light, the rolling hills of the land gently

transition into the suggestion of soft, sensual curves in the sky. River Views seeks to convey a reverence for the earth. This piece is reminiscent

of 19th century American landscape paintings, using the interplay of

diffused light and distinctive autumnal colors to suggest transition.

KATHY BUIST

Kathy’s work has won praise from The

New York Times and has been shown

in museums and galleries throughout

the country, including the Parrish

Art Museum in Southampton, the

National Woman’s Museum Archives in

Washington, D.C., and the Long Island

Museum. Her work is part of private

collections internationally.

Reflections of home

Romona Youngquist’s

landscapes are all places near

and dear to her, mostly her native

Oregon. They are the lush green

hills of wine country, places she

can study for hours, reflecting on

the light until she can capture the

landscape and sky just perfectly.

Youngquist’s paintings aim to

capture a mood that entices

viewers into nostalgia, helping

them escape the fast tempo of

daily life.

ROMONA YOUNGQUIST

Raised in Oklahoma, nature was Romona

Youngquist’s first art teacher as she was

fascinated just looking at the dark trees against

a clear sky near her home. Later awarded

several grants to study with renowned artists

throughout the Northwest, Youngquist is

essentially a self-taught artist, striving for the

simplicity that is unique to nature. Today, she

paints in her studio listening to classical music,

enjoying her own studies of art and seeking to

achieve a new standard of excellence in the art

of landscape painting.

Musical visions

This one in a series of paintings, each with an affinity for diverse musical

constructs. In this piece, the buildings compose a quartet of forms with

many textured and colored surfaces, relating to one another structurally and

acting as a motif in the painting. As a colorist, Paul G. Stone is continually

intrigued with the resonances between visual form and color and musical form

and “color.” While the palette for each piece is a study of tonalities and ranges,

maintaining true values of light and shadow is an essential challenge, as is the

control of dynamics in music.

PAUL G. STONE

Fellow artist, Wolf Kahn, says: “Paul Stone was born with extraordinary talent

in his hands—athletically he uses his right hand and in painting, his left. In his

paintings he demonstrates a parallel versatility. Precisely painted buildings coexist

comfortably with ambiguous foregrounds, clouds, and trees. Thinly painted

passages are contrasted with passages of thick impasto. All this to express a

dramatic vision of the Vermont landscape. Passing light, changing weather, the

four seasons are painted with vigor and intensity.”

Land of dreams

Gwyn Kohr’s interpretation brings a touch of fantasy to the Virginia

landscape in Appalachian Dream. The integration of gold leaf and

oil allows the artist to create a modern minimalist landscape, alluding to

warmth that would not necessarily be present otherwise. With Peaceful Dream, the artist has introduced a dreamlike interpretation of the

Virginia landscape. The composition of the piece and the striking colors

allow the eye to explore it much like we explore our dreams. The subtle

shades of blue intermingled with a more vivid color palette give the

illusion of light and shadow in Sunlight Through the Trees.

Rich Bowman is known for one subject, his skies. Whether

the clouds shroud a coastline or gilt a sunset, Bowman

is a student of the sky, watching its ever-changing form and

capturing that mood on his canvas. Places that one not so

astute might find uninteresting, Bowman finds beautiful and

seeks to capture the serenity of the sky. Working with texture,

design and color, he seeks to connect viewers with an emotion

that strikes a familiar chord in their heart.

RICH BOWMAN

Bowman felt a natural connection to art, beginning his studies in high school and

later studying at the prestigious Kansas City Art Institute. Originally an illustrator for

Hallmark, his heart was always with the countryside. He became a full time artist

with a host of savvy collectors, now eager to share his visions of the sky with those

fortunate enough to witness his work.

Divine inspiration

John Brandon Sills

attempts to communicate

his perception of the

world around him, which

he sees as an expression of

Divinity. “Landscape, not

as God’ s creation, rather

as manifestation of God,

I paint the face of the

eternal,” Sills says. His hope

is that his paintings assist

the viewer in expanding

their own conception of

the spiritual to include

truths that at first seem

impossible. Sills says: “As an

artist I use everyday images

to ask the question, ‘What

is Reality?’”

JOHN BRANDON SILLS

John Brandon Sills works in a manner

that derives its technical inspiration

from the Old Masters and its stylistic

appearance from Barbizon and

Impressionist painting. A classically

trained artist, John uses a mastery

of drawing to infuse his work with a

sense of spontaneity and life. John has

chosen landscape as his primary means

of expression. John’s work emphasizes

aspects that create an awareness of

mans relationship to the environment.

Toward this end, his landscapes exhibit

the sensitivity that urges the viewer

to appreciate the spiritual aspects of

the land, and actively participate in its

protection.

A different point of view

With an expansive architecture of color, Paul Panossian has generated a

unique personal style characterized by expressive brush work, clarity of

form, and an unusual point of view. Panossian’s paintings aim to evoke a feeling

of serenity, his color palette seeks a natural tone, and he accurately captures small

details such as blooming flowers, reflections in water, and sprouting vegetation.

Panossian utilizes his ability to depict rays of light as they fall on the natural

world. Panossian is an expert in the effects of light, and the movement of water

within his work, making him a prominent artist among plein air painters on the

West Coast.

PAUL PANOSSIAN

A native Californian, Paul Panossian was recognized for his artistic talent at a very

young age. He mentored under many professional artists from the age of six,

concluding his formal education with a bachelor of arts degree from California

State University Northridge here he had the opportunity to study with Hans

Burkhardt. Making his home in Santa Barbara he is currently an Associate Member

of Oil Painters of America, a member of the American Impressionist Society and

the Santa Barbara Art Association.

Transforming travel

With her love of travel, artist Claudia Hartley is never without her

sketchpad, stopping along side roads, by coastlines, checking the

different shades of fields, and certainly communing with nature. She then

transforms these sketches into her colorful landscapes that are sought after by

collectors around the globe. Her work is best known for its bursts of color,

depicting images of places you would enjoy spending a lazy afternoon.

CLAUDIA HARTLEY

Claudia Hartley was destined to be an artist drawing with

charcoal on the underside of the bark of the Georgia pine, the

place she was raised, while she was a young Girl Scout. Having

studied art and graduating from the University of Georgia with

honors, she had her own art school in Atlanta before relocating

to the West. She greatly enjoys her life in the desert. Claudia

has been a cover artist for many noted publications, including

American Art Collector.

Captivated by contrast

As a child, Liz Kenyon was enchanted by the

colors and light of her small rural town,

framed by the backdrop of oak covered hills.

Today, she still looks for scenes of dry, grassy

slopes and dark contrasting forms of oaks,

mesquite bush and eucalyptus. She finds that

her medium of soft pastels best captures light

reflecting off grass and the cooler hues of an

oak tree. In painting panoramic scenes, she

combines color and pattern that evoke a feeling

of nostalgia.

LIZ KENYON

A full-time artist in Phoenix,

Arizona, Liz Kenyon is pursuing

her dreams of painting images

that touch her spirit and hosting

workshops that teach others to

develop their painting skills. A

published artist, she has earned

30 awards. As a student at the

University of Arizona, Liz learned

the basics by drawing with a

mesquite twig, focusing on the “unseen” behind the human figure

and sorting colors into endless families of values.

Love of light

In The Old Homestead, Mary Hagy was captivated by an old

abandoned house she had passed several times before, but

one morning, it appeared like a ghost perched on a hillside. “It

felt as if it were almost watching me as I walked around below,

maybe hoping someone would come to visit there again,” she

said. In contrast, she fell in love immediately with the location

that inspired Autumn Reflections. About The Colors of Winter, she says, “Winter is thought of as the most colorless of seasons

but in reality is a contrast of whites, darks and vibrant blues

and the leftover remains of autumn.”

MARY HAGY

Mary Hagy has been a full time painter for 30

years and is one of the regions most collected

artists. Her first influences were the Hudson

River painters. She works exclusively in oils and

is widely recognized for her luminous bucolic

landscapes often featuring water. Patrons are

captivated by her love of detail with some

paintings taking months to complete. Her

understanding of light, atmosphere and space

has lead to the creation of an award winning

body of work.

A spiritual experience

While Rick Fleury

aims to simplify

his approach, he also

reaches for more complex

challenges in terms of scale,

composition and emotion.

“I am drawn to the essence

of a moment’s beauty: the

rare light as it moves across

a meadow, the shadows or

reflections it leaves behind;

the subtle variations of color

as they change with the

seasons and time of day; the

movement of grasses, water

and sand; the solitude of a

wandering low tide or a sun

setting for what seems to be

a last time.”

RICK FLEURY

Born and raised in Massachusetts,

Fleury has dedicated his professional life

to painting coastal landscapes of New

England. He was honored by the Cape Cod

Museum of Art with a solo show in 2006.

The Executive Committee of the Copley

Society of Art, the oldest non-profit art

association in the United States, sought

him out in his Cape Cod studio and invited

him to become a member.
