CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, we confess that too often we have been quick to say 'yes' to you, and then we have been quick to forget our bold words of commitment. We have wanted to serve, only to be easily drawn away by other cares and distracting fears. Yet you have never ceased to love us. You never stopped working for our healing and restoration. Transform us that we may truly become your disciples. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Savior.

* NICENE CREED

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

TODAY’S MUSIC

Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707). was the North German keyboard master whom the young J. S. Bach allegedly walked 200 miles to hear play and possibly study with. Buxtehude’s flamboyant Preludia combine sections that sound like improvisation with carefully controlled fugal sections. Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) was trained as an organist and didn’t begin composing his great symphonies and masses until he was in his forties. The highly chromatic and progressive harmonies of his large-scale works is in direct contrast to the simplicity and directness of his small motets like Locus iste, based on a text for the dedication of churches. Welsh composer Karl Jenkins (b. 1944) is one of the most prolific, popular, and performed composers in the world today. His recorded output has resulted in 17 gold and platinum album awards. Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was on organist in the Southern German tradition. Pachelbel’s style was influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi. J.S. Bach’s older brother Johann Christoph was a student of Pachelbel’s and was young Bach’s first teacher. Pachelbel’s influence can be seen in J.S. Bach’s early works before he became familiar with the works of Buxtehede.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Exodus 17:1-7 (NRSV) From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” 3But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” 4So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”5The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Matthew 21:23-32 (NRSV) When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” 27So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 28“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. 30The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. 31Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes
