Can anyone match my ace?THE nights are lighter and evening golf can resume. It seems a long time since my last evening golf. The 11th hole is now playable albeit with special restrictions. Prior to bunker works starting and the hole being redesigned, I was fortunate in the September Medal to get a hole-in-one, witnessed by Richard Munns and Hash Shah. I’m not sure if I was the last player to get a hole-in-one in a competition before the changes, but it will be interesting to see who is the first on the ‘new’ hole. Our Men’s Hollingsworth team got off to a great start against Priors Hall at home in March and I wish them all the best for this year’s matches to come. Best wishes to the Men’s Scratch team who start their campaign this month and to the Men’s Intermediate team who will be receiving some pre-season training from James Whittemore. The Handicap League, at the time of writing this piece, are yet to start their season, but I wish them all well for their first match. Thank you to all the players. We got another bite from ‘The Beast From The East’ which again closed our course. However, indoors there was a good ‘Irish Theme Night’ on St. Patrick’s Day. Thank you to all who attended and to Peter and his team, I heard the food was fabulous.A big thank you to our Social Committee and to David Hawkins our March Quiz Master - what a great turnout of 17 teams, which was two up on last year. Thanks to all of you that supported the evening, it was a fantastic event.Look out for the ‘French Theme Night’ which takes place on Saturday, April 14th, details are on the Club website. The Wolsey Angels are near to home this month. They are going to be on display in the Leicester Museum from April 28th, more details are on the website.May I wish you all good golf, enjoy!Club Captain,Martin Wall

LOZ Weekes eagled the 12th hole on his way to winning the Courage Cup with 39 points. FOUR pars and one birdie over the inward stretch helped Nick Ward beat William McArthur on countback in the March Mid-week Medal after both shot net 70. THE Wolsey Angels (below) are currently on show in Ipswich, but they will be moved to Leicester Museum from April 28th until early September. If you want to view the Angels, please check with the Museum for opening times.

CLUB pro Ryan Evans maintained his record of collecting prize money in every tournament he has played this season after finishing 21st in the Tshwane Open in Pretoria, South Africa.BIRDIES on the eighth and 15th holes helped Andy Wheatley win the March Medal on countback from Nick Ward with a net 72. FRIDAY Night Golf starts on April 20th. The nine-hole stableford competitions are open to all members with a current handicap and cost just £1 to enter.COUNTBACK was needed in the Ladies March Medal as Susan Sharp did just enough over the closing run of holes to edge out Jenny Wilkinson. WELLINGBOROUGH member Andy Grimmitt has become the new general manager at Rushden Golf Club.WITH pages to fill in the Wellingborough Club Magazine, there are plenty of opportunities to advertise during the coming year. Please contact the Club Office to get your message across to the members and visitors in 2018.

LADIES Captain Mary MacLaren said: “Spring is in the air - the clocks have given us an extra hour of daylight and I’m praying the snow has left us for the remainder of my term in office :) (sorry Sally!).“The course is beginning to dry out, finally, and there seems to have been a lot of planting going on - well done Steve and team for keeping the course in such good shape for us through a very mixed-weather-filled March.“Despite the second falling of snow in the middle of the month we managed to play our annual Captain v Vice Captain match - for some, this was probably the first full 18 holes played this year!“The match ended in an amicable draw overall but using my Captain privilege (and as I had big prizes and little prizes) I used one of the games as the much-needed decider which, conveniently, meant the Captain’s team were the victors.“I’m sure Sally will use her ‘power’ in a similar vein, if needed, next year :)“I’ve a few thanks and congratulatory notices this month - firstly, a huge thank you to Annie and Martin Evans, Geraldine Bunyan and Pauline Kendall for their hard work with our Charity Bridge Drive at the beginning of March.“This was quickly followed up by Paul Sisman getting the ‘Ups n Downs’ charity people here to collect their first ‘tin’.“Between the two Bridge Drives and our first ‘tin’ we’ve currently raised nearly £1500 and some of this will be ‘match-funded’, so here’s to a great start for Martin and my Charities for 2018.“Well done to Ida Huggins and Lema Townsend for winning their first round of the National Daily Mail Foursomes match against Rushden. Good luck in the next round ladies and keep up the great golf.“Congratulations also to Barbara and Ray Walker, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, March 23rd. Wishing you many more.“On Sunday, March 25th, a group of 25 ladies made their way to The Cotswolds Hotel/Golf course in Chipping Norton for a ‘Lady Captain Sunday Special’ - my first Captain’s Away Trip.“It was fabulous. We had sunshine, great food, even better company and the odd glass of wine, plus a few strange games - a very difficult ‘Dingbats’ courtesy of Bina and a weird ‘After Eight’ eating competition.“Both rounds of golf saw us enjoy some much needed sun on our backs! “The winning team were the ‘Swing Out Sisters’ comprising of Caroline Anstee, Kate Nolan, Lema Townsend, Liz Waine and Pat Dawson. Runners-up were the ‘Bunker Babes’ made up of Judith Chapman, Ruth Bowe, Sheena Markham, Sue Butler and yours truly.“Finally, on a personal note, March has been a rather exciting month for the MacLaren household with Meghan winning her first LET event in Australia and having dad on the bag!“Thank you so much for all your congratulatory wishes; it’s been overwhelming to see how many of you are rooting for her and I know Meghan truly appreciates your support.”

Hollingsworth TrophyWELLINGBOROUGH made the most of home advantage in their opening Group B fixture as they hammered Priors Hall 5-0.The hosts (pictured below) rarely looked in danger as a comfortable victory from Tim Veal and Martin Dalton (7&5) in game three sent them on the way.Mark Davis and Dominic Holden had already given Wellingborough the lead as they grabbed a 4&3 win in the opening tie.It wasn’t long before the team success was in the bag as Adam Sherlock and Richard Brown triumphed on the 16th hole. With points difference possibly being decisive in the battle to top the group, the home team displayed their ruthless streak as Jamie Milligan and Duncan Cornish earned a 4&3 win.The whitewash was completed by Jon Harris and Chris Howes as they held their nerve down the 18th hole to beat Paul Briggs and Scott Gordon. The team’s next match is on Saturday, April 7th as they face a trip to Rushden, who lost 4-1 to Kingsthorpe in their first away outing.

WELLINGBOROUGH have enjoyed a proud record in NGL team competitions in recent seasons as the men, ladies and seniors have claimed the plaudits in knockout and league tournaments. With some county competitions already under way, this is how our teams are getting on in 2018.

Scratch LeagueTHE men’s team will begin their title defence earlier than anticipated after Wellingborough’s away clash with Overstone Park was moved to Saturday, April 14th.The home match with Northants County remains as the team’s second outing of the campaign as they go head-to-head on Saturday, May 26th.With each club needing to play their matches before the end of October, Wellingborough also play at home and away against Peterborough Milton, Northampton and newly-promoted Kingsthorpe.

OLIVIA Barby moved a significant step closer to getting her first handicap after a brilliant display in the opening NGL Junior Order of Merit event.Competing in difficult wet weather conditions over nine holes at Collingtree Park, the youngster was the leading girl as she carded an excellent tally of 19 points.Club-mate Jack Meakin backed up his recent victory on the British Junior Golf Tour by grabbing second in the boys nine-hole competition. The eight-year-old carded four net birdies and a gross par on the sixth hole on his way to shooting 22 points over the front nine to win an Easter egg.Jake Sheridan finished just outside the top 10 in both the gross and net categories of the 18-hole competition, while fellow Wellingborough member Isaac Redding also took part.

BOB Davis wasted little time in grabbing a win in the 2018 Seniors Lonsdale Series as he bagged first prize in the second round with an excellent tally of 42 points. The 16-handicapper, who did not play in the first competition in February, was especially good early on as he completed the first six holes in gross level par.Davis (pictured right) still needed a gross par on the 18th hole to secure victory, as Brian Summers (41) came close to snatching top spot with the help of a magnificent back nine of gross two-over-par.

The Summer is coming... we promise!IT would be a huge understatement to say that the weather hasn’t been too good so far this year.As you can appreciate, the snow, rain and bitterly cold conditions has meant that progress on the course work has been difficult in recent months. But don’t worry, as long as we get some favourable weather conditions, we will soon be back on track.Having said that, the majority of the bunker/green surrounds are not quite where they need to be so the expectation is that they will most likely come back into play in the second half of April. Keep an eye on the Club website for more details. In the meantime, take a look at some photos of our pro and members, who enjoyed the Mediterranean sunshine a few weeks ago - I’m sure that will cheer you up!!!

MacLaren secures first Ladies Tour winCLUB pro Meghan MacLaren says her debut victory on the Ladies European Tour was everything she imagined it would be, and more. The 23-year-old, who is embarking on her first full season on the LET, carded scores of 71, 67, 65 and 71 to clinch the Women’s New South Wales Open at Coffs Harbour Golf Club in Australia. After a difficult start to the new season when she missed the cut in her first two competitions down under, the Wellingborough pro found her scoring touch to finish two clear of the chasing pack.MacLaren said: “It was incredible. Sometimes you imagine how things might feel like, and then it turns out to be an anti-climax because you have built it so much up in your head.“But this was so far beyond what I could have hoped for. For it to happen so soon as well, makes it feel pretty special.”To make the win even more memorable for our past ladies club champion, her dad David caddied for her over the last two rounds after flying out to Australia at the start of the week. She admitted: “Dad had been thinking about it from the moment I planned to go to Australia - trying to figure out how it would work because he’d never been there before. But it’s obviously a long way to go.“When I was out there, he said he thought he could get out there for the last week. He just walked around for the first two days.“But the event had a rule that if you are in the last six groups after the cut then you had to use a caddie - I guess it looks better on the television.“I just said to dad ‘you are here, why not?’. It was easier than pulling in some random caddie who I had never met before. The way I was feeling about my golf, I knew it would help to have someone that I trusted.“You can tell people how it feels on the phone, but to have him there in person made it so much better. The rest of family were up in the middle of the night clicking refresh on the internet feed every five minutes. “I got so many messages, and having that support made it all the better because knowing you have those people rooting for you is great. So, thanks to everyone.”

Ladies: First competition, then 100 years later... first vote! WITH Wellingborough Golf Club celebrating it’s 125th anniversary in 2018, member David Wilson investigates all the significant changes that have occured at the Club. In the fourth monthly article, he looks at how the ladies section has developed during the last century and a quarter.

LADIES were the first to play a competition on the first Nest Lane course at Wellingborough on March 29th, 1894 - a nine-hole competition in the morning, while men played at 2pm.It was won by Mrs. W. H. Hope with a score of 92 for nine holes. Handicaps topped out at 52 for ladies (50 for men). There is good evidence that ladies attending the Harrowden Hall School for Young Ladies were the first to play golf at Harrowden in the 1890s.In those early days, there were three ‘classes’ of golfer. The first class men would play 18 holes, while the second and third class men and ladies were allowed to play only nine holes. Membership for ladies increased after the Great War, and by 1921 there were 22 who paid the fee of two guineas.By 1968, fees had risen to £10 for ladies and, at the Centenary Club AGM, membership was 179 ladies and 693 men.Ladies were always second class members: new rules of May 1924 resolved that ‘a match in which a lady or ladies are engaged must stand aside’ and permit men to play through. Athough they could vote in National General Elections in 1928, at Harrowden they could attend committee meetings, but not vote. In the 1980s, ladies were permitted to speak, but not vote, in Directors Meetings and had to vacate the course by 1pm on Saturdays… even if they were on the 18th tee completing a club medal round!Ladies were not allowed in the main bar on a Sunday morning until Captain Jim Clark permitted it in 1994 - a century after that first club competition. The club flourished, even through the years of the Great Depression, thanks in large part to the efforts of Miss Kenyon and the lady members. Through all the years at Bushfields and for some time at Harrowden, the ladies were responsible for catering at golf competitions, matches and social events until Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Jones were appointed stewards.

The ladies organised fund-raising events - Whist Drives, Bridge Drives, Beetle Drives and Dances to which Courtney Hope, Wellingborough’s own actress and playwright, brought her concert party to entertain. The Ladies Championship Trophy - ‘a beautiful Rose Bowl’ - was bought with the profits (£11) from one of the Club Dances and was won by Miss J. E. Henfrey in the first competition in 1922. Miss Kenyon, who is not recorded as having any initials, was Ladies Secretary/Treasurer 1921-31, and was involved in almost everything that went on in the club. She was clearly a very strong and influential character - as ladies secretaries have been since!Eventually equality of membership was agreed in 2008 and ladies now pay the same fees and have the same rights to play as men… nearly!

HARROWDEN Hall may have looked more like a ski resort in the Swiss Alps than a golf course in recent weeks, but a ‘link’ between the two locations could also be appropriate when the weather warms up. In the same way that Wellingborough Golf Club are hosting a number of events to celebrate our 125th anniversary, it is also the case at the oldest club in Switzerland - Engadine Golf Club.

SITUATED close to St. Moritz on some of the highest terrain, our fellow 1893 Club Member is hosting a series of golf events over the summer, plus two exhibitions to showcase their unique club history.Magnificent views of the towering Alpine mountains and charming villages of the Engadine Valley are guaranteed on their two 18-hole courses - both of which are within a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 125-year-old Samedan layout is a links-style parkland with broad fairways flanked by giant larch trees along the valley floor, while Zuoz-Madulain, which opened in 2003, weaves its way along the side of the mountain and between the pine forests. To mark the significant milestone, the first event will take place on June 6th when the club’s partners, local dignitaries, hotels and nearby golf clubs will be welcomed to the Samedan clubhouse. All guests will have the opportunity to look behind the scenes at Engadine and to view an exhibition of over 20 posters located around the Samedan golf complex depicting the club’s history. This will be followed by the St Moritz Gold Cup in July, the Swiss Senior Amateur Championship the week after that and the three-day Engadin Pro-Am over both golf courses. At the start of August will be the Anniversary Tournament, as golfers take part in a Mixed Foursomes competition, just as it would have been some 125 years ago. An Anniversary Dinner will then follow that evening at the famous Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz.Engadine Golf Club will also be the theme of an exhibition at the Design Gallery St Moritz from June to December. Along the famous giant escalator from Lake St Moritz up to Badrutt’s Palace, 31 posters will portray the times gone by at the club as well as the development of golf in the Engadine.A 20-year-old single malt whisky by Glentauchers in just 246 numbered bottles, 125 of which come with a matching decanter designed by Robert Niederer, has also been produced to mark the jubilee. This being a nod to the fact that at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century, sandwiches were washed down with whisky for breakfast at Samedan!

Anniversary celebrations all around the world
