FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 29, 2018
"The Eucharist is
flavored with
Jesus' words and
deeds, the taste of
his passion, the
fragrance of his
Spirit. When we
receive it, our
hearts are
overcome with
the certainty of
Jesus' love."
-Pope Francis
From the Pastor’s Desk
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Congratulations to our Second Graders who are receiving their First Communion at Mass today! They have prepared themselves for a deeper entrance into the sacramental life of the Church, first with their First Reconciliation and now through the reception of Jesus’ Body and Blood. We pray that Jesus may continue to touch the depths of their hearts so they can know His peace and joy always!
St. Peter Julian Eymard was a priest from the nineteenth century who was noted for his devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist. In fact, Pope St. John Paul II referred to him as the “Apostle of the Eucharist”. In a time like ours, when statistics report that only 63% of Catholics (some statistics say as low as 30%) believe in the Real Presence (i.e. that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus and not just a symbol), saints such as St. Peter Julian Eymard are so important to remind us of the importance and reality of the Eucharist.
St. Peter Julian Eymard’s desire to foster a deeper faith in the Eucharist was spurred on by his recognition in his own time of a drop in belief among professing Catholics. It makes you realize that the challenges we face today are not new challenges. But what contributes to this decline in faith? Is it simply that we are so busy and distracted that we don’t give a second thought to the presence of Jesus? Or is it something deeper, that Jesus has become a stranger to us? Do we come to Church without that deep knowledge and awe that the Lord is present in the tabernacle, hidden from our eyes under the guise of bread and wine? The more we contemplate the mystery of His Presence, the more He will open our eyes to see Him there, not unlike when Jesus made Himself known in the breaking of the bread in the presence of his disciples that He met on the road to Emmaus (see Luke 24:13-35).
St. Peter Julian Eymard encouraged proper preparation for receiving Communion, as well as proper thanksgiving after Communion. He laid out five steps we can take immediately after receiving the Eucharist to help us grow in our relationship with Jesus. These are good suggestions to help us foster a reverent awe of the gift we receive each Sunday. 1) Be silent. Be at peace in the presence of the Lord because He
promises rest to weary and afflicted souls. 2) Adore Jesus and praise Him for His power. 3) Thank Jesus for having loved you and nourished you through the gift
of His Body and Blood. 4) Be sorry again for all your sins. Resolve never to offend the Lord
again, by the help of His grace. 5) Ask whatever you will, since now is the moment of grace, when
Jesus is disposed to bestow His greatest graces upon you.
After receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, we should then carry ourselves with greater dignity and peace, knowing that we were found worthy to carry around within us the King of kings and Lord of lords. What a witness we can then be to those around us, as we literally carry Jesus to them! And what better way to extend the graces of the Eucharist beyond our Sunday Mass than to take some time to visit our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. Consider visiting our chapel, which is open for 48 hours from Tuesday 9 AM to Thursday 9 AM. Come for an hour or for 15 minutes. Jesus is present and waiting for you!
As we celebrate with our Second Graders this weekend, may we recall the great gift of the Eucharist and pray to know the graces we receive through such great a gift!
God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

ICU Mobile Twin Cities Spring Gala
Hazeltine Golf Club in Chaska hosted this year’s Image Clear Ultrasound (ICU) Spring Benefit on Thursday, April 19. ICU Mobile operates like a crisis pregnancy center on wheels. The 31-foot renovated RV is equipped with an ultrasound, exam table and flat screen TV for viewing ultrasounds. It seeks to reach women in the southern Twin Cities of Scott, Dakota, Carver, Rice and Le Sueur Counties. The vehicle can be seen in shopping centers, strip malls and church parking lots. ICU Mobile is a ministry of Alpha Women’s Center that previously existed in a building in Prior Lake. This non-profit mobile medical facility offers women confidential free medical services, free pregnancy tests and free limited ultrasounds from 6-24 weeks. All clients are treated with respect in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere.
The featured speaker for the ICU fundraiser was St. Paul native and Harvard graduate Matt Burke. Matt spent 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and 4 more with the Baltimore Ravens. He was named the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his off-the-field service and his playing excellence. In February 2013 after a Super Bowl win with the Ravens, the six-time Pro Bowl center retired. A husband and father of 8, Matt shared his commitment to defending the unborn. He encouraged us to be strong and courageous in defense of life.

St. Mary’s CCW Events
Dear friends, As you heard at Masses last weekend, Archbishop Hebda recently appointed me pastor of St. Anne’s in LeSueur, in addition to our current four-parish cluster of St. Mary, St. Henry, Nativity, and Immaculate Conception, effective July 1. Fr. Adams will continue to assist as Parochial Vicar (i.e. Assistant Pastor) of all the parishes. In addition, as of June 13 we will welcome Fr. James Stiles as an additional Parochial Vicar. Fr. Stiles is currently Parochial Vicar at St. Odilia parish in Shoreview. He is a good man and a good priest, ordained for only three years. Both Fr. Adams and I know him well and are excited to have him join us in ministry. This is a new model of parish ministry that has never been done before in our Archdiocese, though it has been done in some other rural dioceses. As the number of priests declines and the needs of our parishes remain, we’ve looked for new ways to address the needs. There are some clear benefits to this new model: 1) Consistency in the management of our parishes: With a single pastor overseeing the
administration of all the parishes, we ensure that all of our communities are similarly using their resources in the best possible way, and ensure that best practices are shared among the parishes.
2) Forming connections: We want to begin seeing ourselves as Church in the wider sense, not just as a single parish operating independently of others. This new model allows us to reach outside ourselves and create meaningful relationships with other Catholics from nearby parishes that we might not otherwise pursue.
3) Utilizing the full range of gifts of several priests: As you know, each priest has his own unique set of skills and gifts that connect differently with different individuals. With several priests working together, our ministry can reach out and connect with more individuals than any one of us could do alone.
4) Priest support: Living together with the opportunity for fraternal life is a benefit that allows priests to stay connected, share joys and struggles, remain psychologically and spiritually healthy, and be accountable to others. As of now, the plan is that all three priests will live in community at the parish house in LeCenter.
5) Truly apostolic ministry: In the Gospels Jesus sent out His apostles two by two to the nearby villages and towns. They went out from a central hub and returned at the end of each day to report the good works and struggles that they had encountered. This new model is more than just three priests working in a cluster of five parishes – it is truly being “sent out” to minister to the People of God.
While I am very aware of the challenges that managing five parishes presents, most especially the amount of work, I am also very excited about the unique opportunity this gives us to grow the Church in our corner of the Archdiocese and to set a standard for this model for the future. In the coming weeks, I will be working with all the parishes to explore the various questions of how to maintain a priestly presence in all communities and address all the needs. For now, full details have not been worked out. In the course of the coming months, as we make this transition, please keep our parishes and priests in your prayers. Know that we priests pray for you daily. In Christ, Fr. Christopher L. Shofner

Opportunity to Support our Kids Grades 9-12!
We would like to set up a scholarship fund for kids who would like to attend the INTO the DEEP canoe trip to Voyageurs National Park, MN (see this bulletin for more information about the retreat). The kids leave their electronic devices at home and experience God’s promptings through their natural surroundings.
In addition to camping, canoeing, daily Mass & Eucharistic adoration they will have discussions about Pope John Paul II’s teachings on the Theology of the Body. This will be a great experience for the kids and we would hate to see them miss out due to inability to pay for the retreat. If you can help out with a donation, please let Fr. Adams know, drop it in the collection basket, or bring it to the church office marked “INTO the DEEP retreat”. The cost for the 5 day retreat is $435 per person. Thank you for your generosity!
Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal Today! Right now, over
40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs, such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training, to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United Sates. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions. Envelopes can be found in the church entrances. Your donation can be dropped off at the parish office sometime this week.
