APRIL 29-30, 2017

First Communion and May CrowningToday our children will be receiving their First Holy Commu-nion. It is always such a special day and so beautifully cele-brated by our parish. Our children have been preparing all year for this day and are excited about being able to receive Our Lord. I want to thank the teachers, catechists, and our director of religious education, Cody Egner, for preparing the children for this sacrament.

On Thursday, May 4, you are invited to our May Crowning at 7 PM at St. Cecilia. We will sing all of the beautiful Marian hymns and crown the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is fitting that we crown her as she unites us to her son. This service is one of the defining devotions of our Catholic faith. This feast brings chil-dren to see our mother Mary as the queen of heaven. It brings us the promises of spring as we crown her with flowers. A lot of work goes into preparing this beautiful feast. I hope every-one can join us. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it would be fitting to invite your mother or a special mother figure in your life to this wonderful feast day.

Amen? Amen!

A GOSPEL REFLECTIONLUKE 24:13-35

by FATHER JASON WILLIAMS

THE PASTOR’S CORNER“Stay with us, Lord!”

While two downcast disciples walk back towards their former way of life, the Christ approaches and initiates a conversation regarding the things that have occurred in the holy city. It becomes a twofold encounter, and the Lord helps them to grasp the reality behind what they have witnessed in the last few days. They are in-trigued by this encounter and plead with the traveler that he stay the evening with them.

The same twofold encounter with the living, risen Lord occurs at every holy Mass. Little by little he opens the Scriptures to us, helping us to understand God’s plan of salvation from sin and restoration in grace through the work of his Son. Then he — in the person of the priest — takes bread, says the blessing, breaks it, and gives it to us, his disciples walking along the road of our life. The disciples of Christ are not just those who share in a meal with him; they are those who unite their lives through this Sacrifice of divine love to the Savior’s work of redemption. They are those who desire that the Lord who sets hearts aflame stay with them always. They are those who, recognizing their God and his salvation in the breaking of the bread, go forth joy-fully to proclaim that Christ is alive and has conquered the death of sin.

May the same eagerness and enthusiasm that filled the hearts of the disciples who invited Christ to stay with them at Emmaus fill our hearts as well, and may we go forth from the encounter of each Mass zealously proclaiming to those we meet that Jesus Christ is truly risen from the dead.

“HAIL, HOLY QUEEN ENTHRONED ABOVE, O MARIA.HAIL, QUEEN OF MERCY AND OF LOVE, O MARIA.”

Can the Church err in questions of faith? The faithful as a whole cannot err in faith, because Jesus promised his disciples that he would send them the Spirit of truth and keep them in the truth (John 14:17). [80-82, 85-87, 92, 100]

Just as the disciples believed Jesus with their whole heart, a Christian can rely completely on the Church when he asks about the

way of life. Since Jesus Christ himself gave his apostles the commission to teach, the Church has a teaching authority (the

Magisterium) and must not remain silent. Although individual members of the Church can err and even make serious mistakes,

the Church as a whole can never fall away from God’s truth. The Church carries through the ages a living truth that is greater

than herself. We speak about a depositum fidei, a deposit of faith that is to be preserved. If such a truth is publicly disputed

or distorted, the Church is called upon to clarify again “what has always and everywhere been believed by all” (St. Vincent of

Lerins, d. 450). (YOUCAT question 13)

Ref lections with the Saints: St. Ita (A.D. 570)Who was your favorite teacher? Perhaps it was your first-grade teacher who taught you to read and instilled a love of books. Or your grandmother who taught you how to bake a pie or sew a straight seam. Or a mentor who taught you how to survive the rigors of your first job.

Anyone lucky enough to have been profoundly influenced by a teacher owes a debt of gratitude. Teachers do more than instruct; they change lives. They help us see the world in a new way. Most of all, they help us see our potential and ourselves in ways we might never have seen without them.

St. Ita lived in Ireland in the sixth century in what is now the county of Limerick. Among her other ventures, she founded a boys’ school. There, for five years, she taught a young lad by the name of Brendan. He, in his turn, grew up to become famous in his own right as an abbot, missionary, and saint. In Brendan’s biographies, St. Ita is cited as one of the primary influences of his early life.

One of the greatest gifts we can give those who have taught us is our thanks. –Woodeene Koenig-Bricker

What makes a good teacher?

Have I ever thanked the

people who have taught me well?

“If the only prayer you said in your life was ‘I thank you’, that would be enough.” – Meister Eckhart

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

It was on May 13, 1917 that Our Lady first appeared to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. To mark this 100th anniversary, a Rosary rally will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 9:30 AM on the front steps of our church. This public square Rosary, sponsored by America Needs Fatima, will be one of thousands of rallies that will take place all across the United States on that day. Please join us and thousands of other Catholics on this day in offering contrition for our sins and to fervently pray for the conversion of the United States and the world.

“One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world.” -Saint Dominic
