Autonomous foodrobots move withthe times

“Having the flexibilityto release manpowerfrom repetitive jobs tomore productiveemployment, whilebeing able to providecomprehensive, fullyautomated

traceability will be areal gamechanger infast paced foodproduction andsupply environments”

Manufacturers in the food and drinksector are increasingly asked toprovide a wider variety of offerings, without suffering a decrease inproductivity. These demands havedramatically increased boththe amount, and complexity, of tests.Bruno Adam, Omron’s Mobile ProjectsDirector Europe explains how smartmobile robots are adapting to meetfuture food factory requirements. As with many other industries in theworld today, the food and drinksbusiness is under immense pressureto increase productivity and sales, while keeping costs down. Amanufacturer’s normal reaction to thissituation would be to increaseproduction. However, there is anothersource of pressure for manufacturersthat is making implementation of thatsolution more difficult. Consumers aredemanding a wider variety ofproducts, rather than accepting whatthe manufacturer offers. This pressurecould entail new flavours, sugar orgluten-free varieties, or differentportion sizes. Increasing production isnot the simple solution it once was.

These conflicting pressures haveforced food and beveragemanufacturers to adapt productionlines to try to satisfy customerdemands, without sacrificingproductivity. Some manufacturer arelooking to install smaller, dedicatedlines, while others are trying to rampup production, adding new lines. In

both these cases, the amount oftesting required increases. There isalso an increased need to transportsmaller amounts of produce aroundthe factory. This additional complexityintroduces several issues with currentproduction lines.

“Having the flexibility to releasemanpower from repetitive jobs tomore productive employment, whilebeing able to provide comprehensive, fully automated traceability will be areal gamechanger in fast paced foodproduction and supply environments”Bruno Adam

An increase in the number of testsamples creates an issue withidentification and traceability, which, inturn, requires a robust trackingsystem in place. Furthermore, theneed to transport product around thefactory is generally accomplished byhand, meaning that the efficienciesgained from automation are beingeaten away by additional staffingcosts. One alternative method oftransporting goods is by usingautomated guided vehicles (AGVs).These mobile robots can carry a totefrom one set position to another. Theygenerally use physical guides tonavigate, such as magnetsembedded in the floor, or paintedlines. The downside to AGVsis that when they are asked to do adifferent task, the physical navigationguides have also to be moved, whichcan halt production.

Multiprotocol block I/O devices that act as simple I/O devices or as stand-alone logic controllers. Field Logic Controllers can be used without a PLC in stand-alone applications, perform arithmetic, timing and counting functions and share data with a PLC. ARGEE challenges what an I/O device can do by creating a hybrid between simple block I/O and higher level PLCs, keeping intelligence and control local to the machine.
