THE INLANDER NEWSLETTER FIRST EDITION VOL.2 Welcome to the latest edition of THE INLANDER, your quarterly update on all things cricket at the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union : Inland. It is hard to believe that we are already well into the new cricket season – All the pre-season prep work is now a thing of the past, as our provincial, club and schools cricket programmes are in full swing. This is the time of year when we as fans of the game get to dust off our equipment, get out onto the ovals around our province and play this great sport that we all love. As players of this great game, we must always remember the tireless work of the people not doing battle in the middle: our Administrators, Umpires, Scorers, and Coaches – who give so freely of their time to ensure that we can in fact do, what we love to do. I would like to wish each and every player and team the best of luck for the season, play hard but at all times play with humility and respect. But above all, make sure you are having fun doing it! Welcome to the latest edition of THE INLANDER, your quarterly update on all things cricket at the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union : Inland.

It is hard to believe that we are already well into the

new cricket season – All the pre-season prep work is

now a thing of the past, as our provincial, club and

schools cricket programmes are in full swing. This

is the time of year when we as fans of the game

get to dust off our equipment, get out onto the ovals

around our province and play this great sport that

we all love.

As players of this great game, we must always

remember the tireless work of the people not doing

battle in the middle: our Administrators, Umpires,

Scorers, and Coaches – who give so freely of their

time to ensure that we can in fact do, what we love

to do.

I would like to wish each and every player and team

the best of luck for the season, play hard but at all

times play with humility and respect. But above all,

make sure you are having fun doing it!

KZN INLAND WARM UP ROUTINE

Game Day Warm-up

WHY DO WE NEED TO WARM UP?From a physiological perspective, the objectives are:

• To increase muscle temperature, core temperature and blood flow.• To activate the neural system

Reasons why these help performance are as follows:

• Increased speed at which muscles contract and relax, better for coordination and skill execution• Improved muscle strength and power outputs, sprint faster, jump higher, bowl faster, throw further.• Improved rate of force development e.g. Batting and bowling mechanics.• Less likely to tear muscles.• Improved oxygen to muscles and enhances metabolic reactions which results in improved work capacity e.g. better performance.

IS THERE A BEST WAY TO WARM UP?

While the influence of a warm up on injury prevention is unclear, the evidence suggests a positive effect. As an example, an increase in muscle temperature can increase the resistance to muscle tear. However, how an athlete warms up is critical.

At the KZN Inland Senior men’s team our warm ups are kept very simple and practical for what we require or might need in the game at the time. Our warm ups are geared towards us playing a 3-day game first and then the one-day game on the Sunday so our routines will change throughout the 4 days that we arrive at the ground. The key elements of a warm up for me are as follows:

Phase 1- (10 mins)

Dynamic warm up routine: This includes jogging in a straight line, side to side running between cones, ladder work for quick feet, foam rollers, medicine ball throwing, rubber bands for stretching and muscle activation and skipping ropes. This allows a thorough warm up and now your player/s should be ready to move onto the next phase.

Phase 2- (5 – 10 mins)

Fielding warm up: I like the idea of a team based catching drill to create synergy and encourage team work. Also great for hand eye coordination and just a general “wake up” in the morning. E.g. Pairs catching, snake catching game, hand football etc.

Phase 3- (10 – 15 min)

Batting bowling and individual fielding:

This is when player/s are allowed to focus on specifics whether it be batting, bowling or fielding. Generally, the batsmen in top order will hit some under arm throws or go to the nets if available to prepare for batting. Bowlers will bowl alongside the square to loosen up and work on final game plans etc. and anyone who feels they require extra fielding e.g. high catches, slip catches or ground fielding can now work on this skill.

NB Please always bear in mind that all the preparation should be done in the days leading up to the game. Anything you do on the day of the game is merely there to prepare you for the day and should not be seen as a practice session.
