I have always had this mental picture of December circling into January. Our year moves slowly through winter and gains momentum through the refreshment and vitality of spring and summer. We turn the corner from summer to fall and then climb through the season of color and change to reach the pinnacle of the Christmas season. It is not an arduous climb but a steady ascension to a celebratory culmination of the completed calendar year. At that point it is not blockaded with a gate that needs opening but rather a festive hallway that takes us into a new opportunity. I always thought my personal perspective was unique, maybe even strange. Then I read where many cultures of bygone days had a similar view using the image of a snake swallowing its tail. Often, with that vision in mind, ancient versions of almanacs were printed as round not rectangular books. Apparently it was a way of viewing time as cyclical and not linear with days, weeks, months, and years flowing into each other. We are now in January. The journey has commenced. With this turn comes not a “do-over” of this past year but the opportunity for renewal and fresh journeys. It will be our fifth full calendar year with you. We will complete our new Family Ministry Center. With that will come celebration but also the opportunity and the need to reevaluate our missional goals. We will discover new ministries and missions God has planned. We will follow these paths together. May the experience of these past four and a half years and the Advent season not be marked as the “end” of a path but the celebration of resurrection and a testimony to the redemption bestowed to us by Christ. Let’s journey on. Let’s “Love Where We Live” and join God where he works. Let’s get moving. Christmas 2019 is right around a few seasonal corners.

January Highlights

Wednesday Night Suppers Resume January 9

Our regular schedule of Wednesday night suppers resumes January 9, beginning with supper at 5:30 followed by Bible study at 6:00 and Adult Choir Practice at 7:00.

Children will have a back-to-school skating party at the skating rink at 5:30.

Please remember to sign up for supper by Tuesday, January 8. Menu will be fried chicken, creamed potatoes, peas, rolls and dessert.

Senior Happenings

Christmas Dinner

On Saturday, December 1, we had our annual Christmas party. The fellowship hall was decorated in a traditional red and white color scheme, with red poinsettias in each window and white candles and magnolia leaves on each table. Thanks to Carolyn Chestnutt, Carol McCullen, Pat Albritton, Sandra Pridgen and Johnny Chestnutt for a job well done.

Everyone enjoyed a meal of ham, potato salad, butter beans, baked apples, cranberry salad, yeast rolls, desserts and tea. Sue Miller made praline pies and the cakes were given by Carol McCullen, Joyce Lippard, JoAnna Dunlap, Ann Weeks, Ruth Roderick and Phylis McKee.

Mrs. Ann Weeks shared a moving devotion that touched everyone’s heart. His Voice entertained with good old gospel songs, and closed with everyone’s favorite, Mary Did You Know?

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this evening special. Dr. Ray Ammons closed with prayer.

On Sunday, December 2, the Senior Adult Council met and prepared gift bags for our homebound and nursing home residents. Each person receives a visit with devotions and prayer, and gets a gift bag for Christmas.
