    The GuideThe Guide

September 9th - Sunday School Begins

This year we will have a

    slight change in our

    Sunday School program.

    The children will go

    directly to Sunday

    School except for the last

Sunday of the month. The program is designed

for the children/youth to explore a Bible story or

theme, and design various ways to present that

story as a lesson for the congregation on the last

    Sunday of the month.

    Further details coming in mid-August

    Stock Car Racing Coffee Hour

    August 26th

Hear the roar of the engines (not

really) and cheer on your favorite

    race car during coffee hour.

    Intergenerational Fun Coffee Hour

    During coffee hour everyone is

invited to play a few of those fun

    board games you remember.

From Pastor Eric Quinney-Burnard ( Email: [email protected] )

Kay told me that after the first of July

the summer goes fast. She’s right. Most of

the high schools begin classes by August 15

or shortly thereafter. All other school

activities are starting up while all summer

activities are winding down. Even the leaves

and grass are beginning to turn different

shades. Okay, we are all aware of the

    seasonal changes.

But the question is did you take

advantage of each and every day of this fast

summer? Too often our attention gets

misdirected. We either gaze behind us, the

reminiscence of the past that has lodged

itself in our memories but can never return.

Or we strain our eyes to the distant future to

things that have not occurred which tie us up

with the worries and anxiety of “what if.”

Basically, time slips away because we

tend to not relax and focus (translated enjoy)

the moment. God gave us our lives to be

lived, not in large swaths of time and events,

but in individual moments where we

participate in the rhythm of life. Each

moment is to be experienced, relished and

    enjoyed to the fullest.

    Yesterday has

    passed and the

    future will be here

    before you know it.

    But dance your heart

    out to the rhythm of

    the moment because

    God gave you that

    moment for such a

    dance.

Christian Education Ministry invites church family and friends to bring a

sample of their favorite snack food. Ministry team provides the beverages.

Come for a time of fellowship, fun, and food as we close “Summer Game

Sundays” with the thrills of miniature car racing.

    Nursery for an Hour

Our church opens an inviting, well equipped nursery for infants

and toddlers every Sunday morning during worship. The

nursery concept offers a great way for the very young child to

take that first step into Christian fellowship. As the child

becomes more and more familiar, it also allows parents and guardians to attend

Worship knowing their child is in a safe, friendly environment.

    How About Spending An Hour...

providing watchful care for infants and toddlers and enabling

parents and guardians to worship? With four volunteers, we

can assure the nursery serves families every Sunday. Please let

Pastor Eric know if you could volunteer just ONE HOUR,

    ONE SUNDAY A MONTH.

A Confirmation Meeting will be held on Sunday, August 19th A Confirmation Meeting will be held on Sunday, August 19th

for High School Freshman and older following Worship.

Let Pastor Eric know if you would like to join them.

    Food Safety Training Certification Class

On June 26 and 27, 2018 Jeni White, Barb Bonner and Linda DuBois attended the Allergen

Awareness/Food & Kitchen Safety Training at Prairie Bluff Golf Course. The class was also

attended by the kitchen staff and Ryan Cronholm, Food & Beverage Manager of Prairie Bluff

Restaurant. The class was taught by Jeannie Kotsiovos, a Certified ServSafe Instructor from A+

Food Training. It was an intense two mornings and we covered a lot of material. Some of it was

common sense but there were a lot of areas that were new to us. The good news is, we all

passed the test and now have our certificates.

We took this course so that when the church has a luncheon or something like the Grilled

Cheese Sandwich Supper, the Cookie Walk or Salad Luncheon that one of us will be on hand to

make sure that the kitchen is clean and safe for serving food to the general public. This is a

requirement of the Will County Health Department Food Service when we hold these types of

functions that someone with certification be present in the kitchen. We would like to have a few

other members of the church be certified with this training, so please let Pastor Eric or the

church office know if you may be interested.

One of things we came away with is our need to better utilize our sinks in the kitchen. The trio

of sinks along the wall should only be used for washing dishes. We should be using one side of

the double sinks to only wash our hands and the other side could be used to fill coffee urns or

    wash fruits or vegetables.

To celebrate the end of the class we enjoyed a wonderful lunch on the patio at Prairie Bluff.

Father Beiting's Christian Appalachian Project (CAP)

On Sunday, June 10, 2018 Mr. Ray Mikrut spoke during the Mission Moment. He and his family take

unsold items from area rummage/basement sales to Louisa, KY. (And we always thought it was

somewhere in TN!) They have been doing this for the past 25 years. It is for a mission store run by

the Christian Appalachian Project,(CAP), founded by Father Ralph Beiting. This year they loaded

two trailers of unsold items from our church basement sale for the mission. Ray had already made

the trip 13 times this year and stated that his sons had made the trip 6 times.

Ray spoke of how he and his family became involved with the CAP and at Coffee Hour continued to

speak with many of us. He also left several books which Father Beiting had authored and a couple

of DVDs, along with a small album of pictures of one of their trips to KY and a monthly magazine

published by CAP. I took the DVDs home and was awed by the message they contained. Though

Father Beiting has passed away, the work of the CAP is still vitally important to the Appalachian

area he loved. The books he authored are easy to read - short chapters with a wonderful story in

each. I know some of you have taken the books home to read and I hope you have enjoyed them.

I have set aside a shelf in the Legacy Room for these books and DVDs. They are located on the shelf

above the church Worship Service DVDs. Feel free to borrow them. Ray has graciously loaned

them from his personal library for our enjoyment for this year and will pick them up when he picks

up our unsold basement sale items next year.

Grilled Cheese Fundraiser - October 13th

Looking ahead we need volunteers for all kinds of helpful

locations, cook, server, ticket collector, selling tickets.

The Grilled Cheese Fundraiser is an important fundraiser

    for Our Churches Wider Mission.

Look for more information in September.

All Hands on Deck - the Fall Edition

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 20th to offer a few

hours to help clean the church facility. How we keep our facility

says a lot about how we welcome people, it’s Sacred Hospitality.

Watch for more information towards the end of September.
