lQ90 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

As members of the congregation of Flora First Christian ~urch, we havemuch to be thankful for as we end 1990 and head into 1991.

Most importantly we are thankful for our caring and ministering Pastor. Those of us who have had times of suffering and sorrow know how comfortingit has been to have had Gary at our side. He appreciate Gary, Cathy an'itheir family.

The farm has been sold and the proceeds have been invested.

Each of our Chairpersons and their various committees have performedsplendidly to insure that their functions were diligently carried out ina manner that would be pleasing in the eyes of our Lord. For this, Iexpress my sincere appreciation to: Glenda Oilar-Worship; Jennifer Archihald-Evangelism; Vonda Pennington-Membership; Tom Adams-Property; RobertaGillam-Outreach; Renita Overholser- Christian Education; Robert ~ornturg-Stewardship; Jeanne Martin-Youth; Dick Oilar-Nominating and to each person whoserved faithfully on these committees.

I am grateful for the faithful attendance of each of the Board of Directorsat every meeting and a special thanks to the other Church Officers, EdKrauss, Shannon Rader, Phyllis Reinke, Karen Robeson, Betty ~ills, KathernShope and Roselyn Boller, all for a joh "ell done. Ed asked to he, and ,;asreplaced by Tom Helvie as vice President for 1991. I am very pleased thatall of the rest of the officers graciously agreed to serve another year withme. As I write this, our nation has just become involved in what well may be aterrible conflict. Now, as perhaps never before, is a time for each of usto forget our personal likes and dislikes and become more involved in allof the ministeries. of our Church, starting with Youth, Outreach, Stewardship, and continuing throughout all of the rest of our committee functions.

I pray that 1991 will be a year that God can say "Hell done, thou goodand faithful church."

May God Bless Us in 1991

A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER

Perhaps it would be easier to say that the year of 1990 is one that I wouldlike to forget. In.my few years in the pastoral ministry, I cannot remember en-countering a year as difficult personally as this one. On the other hand, memoryis a great teacher and simply to forget that a year ever happened erases any op-portunities for lessons to be learned.

It would also be unfair to allow my personal perception to "color" the wholepicture; To do so would allow a distortion of the successes and victories thatwe have celebrated together. It would also cloud those experiences and relation-ships that I cherished throughout the year.

I do want to express appreciation for the capable leaders we have within ourfamily. Officers, Directors, and Committee Chairpersons have been faithful ser-vants. I also want to lift up our church staff who have exercised a great dealof flexibility while maintaining the church's ministry at a level we can be proudof! I personally have experienced tremendous support from you and sincerely ap-preciate those expressions.

On the following pages, you will read only a portion of the church's minis-try of witness and service for the 1990 year. I would like to invite you to lookbeyond the facts and figures and see the faces, hear the voices, and embrace theunknown persons whom we have been able to care for through our mission work. Iwould also like to invite you to recall the images and pictures from the "WE AREFAmLY" album that entered your houses not too many months ago. Those pictureswere made possible because of the sacrifice and gifts of time, talent, and finan-cial resources that you shared over the year's time.

With 1991 before us, let me challenge you, as individuals, and we, as a partof the Body of Christ, to be "1ed by our dreams and not pushed by our problems".r10vin9 forward, responding faithfully to the call of God, is the task set beforeus; Praising the God who strengthens us through the valleys we walk, I offereach of you this blessing: SHALOM!

Your minister,

The ladies also were given calendarsto help support Quadrenial. Quilt block were given to those interested indecorating them to tell something about their family. The quilt will bedisplayed in the fellowship hall when finished.

Many of the ladies participated in the "World Day of Prayer" in March. The service was held here.

In April new officiers were selected. They are: Vanda Pennington,President; Betty Mills, Vice-president; Sandy Simpson, Secretary; MarthaHoffman, Treasurer; Cathy West, Worship; Helen Dobler, Study; Karen Robeson,Love Circle; Jo Ann Smith, Assistant; Gay Wheeler, Candlelight Circle;Roberta Gillam, Assistant; Martha Hoffman, Sewing; Louise Obermiller, assistant;Annabelle Cripe, Thrift Shop representative; Pat Dillon, Becky Eickenberry,Shannon Rader and Jeanne Thornburg, Service. The kitchen also received itsannual cleaning.

Our Mother's Day banquet was held in May with 12 baby dedication invi-tations sent out. There was an Area Workshop held in Logansport. Six ofour ladies attended.

In June we held our General Meeting at the Mullin School and alsohosted the graduates reception.

In July we began our campaign for toys to be taken to our Mississippifamilies. There were 15 ladies that made their way to Mississippi to visitand let them know that "We Care".

Bible School was held in August and we provided refreshments and thekitchen workers for our children who attended.

Instead of a bazaar this year we decided to make noodles in September. This project proved to be a hugh success. We also collected items for theWomen's Prison project.

Pecans were ~old. in October and on the 21st. we hosted a rtHarvestDinner" after Church. About 100 people attended.

"College Boxes" were packed in November. Eighteen were sent.Christmas boxes were sent to the Mississippi families and we were

blessed by Bill & Pat Helvie and Pete & Joan Jackson offering to deliverthem to our families. They were blessed by the response of those theyvisited.

Each month, as necessary, we worked at the Thrift Shop and delivered

I1Meals-on-Wheelsll• Each Circle also sends cards to the sick and shut-inseach month. We also give money for Bibles each month. The ladies sewedin the basement, served funeral meals, as needed, and took meals to thosewho have been sick or had surgery.

All 1n all, I think the ladies worked very hard to let our community, our country and the world know that "Jesus is Lord" and it is our love forHim that inspires us to move forward as we head in 1991.

Thanks to all who have served, are serving and who support our C.W.F.If you are a lady and have never been to a meeting, let me extend to youthis personal invitation to do so. We'd love to have you.

To God be the Glory,

Vonda

CHRISTIANEDUCATIONCOMMITTEE

The Christian Education Committee's objective this past year was to increase theattendance of our Sunday School and to better improve the education department.

Our Sunday School prOClram, after two years using the "Master Teacher" program, chose to have two teachers for each class. One teacher taught for one quarter and theother one taught for the following quarter using each other for substitutes.. Thisprogram was led by Maurice Robeson, Sunday School Superintendent. A very spe6al t.hankyou to Maurice and ALL of our teachers!

As always, Bibles were presented to the second grade class at promotion. This year4 students received their Bi.bles.

A new Sunday School class was started this year and is very successful! The "TNT"class is so large their doors are bursting at the seams. They also have been thesponsors of many fun and worthwhile activities. Thanks class!

Junior Church was led this year by Marybeth Ayres with Lisa Eikenberry as hersubstitute. A diange was made in the program this year by dropping the age to andincluding the second grade. A drop in attendance is noticed by an average attendanceof 10 to 12 but the span difference in ages is much easier to prepare the materi a 1.Marybeth stressed memorizing verses and giving recognition to the children at the endof each month. We greatly appreciate the dedication of Marybeth and Lisa.

In September Marybeth resigned this position effective December 31, 1990. Herreolacement will be Lisa Eikenberry. Lisa will not have Junior Church the last Sundayof each month in order that the children can attend regular worship.

The Turtle Club met every month for children in kindergarten and including secondgrade. The program for this group was centered on caring for others. They madeValentine Cards and Easter cupcakes which were taken to the Brethren Home residentsas well as making and placing bird feeders around town. A school's out party wasce 1ebrated by taki'ng the chil dren to the Indianapolis Zoo. Thank you Marybeth forbeing their leader. In September this orogram was transferred to the Youth Committee.

The nursery was being attended by Holly Dillon and volunteers until June. In JuneHolly requested a summer recess and has since taken a job that does not allow her timeto attend the nursery. Annette Black has done a SUPER JOB of finding and schedulingworkers for the nursery that has now become an all volunteer nursery! Also a newchildren's table has been purchased for the nursery as well as some new toys. Thesetoys were received with credits from a toy party that we placed orders with for someof our own children and grandchildren.

Vacation Bible School again was very successful with Cathy West and Lisa Eikenberryas co-directors. Due to summer school and other activities immediately following the endof school, an August VBS was held. The highest day attendance was 105. A BIG thank youto the directors, teachers, helpers and other volunteers! Without you this programwould not happen.

The VBS program is in serious jeopardy because of the lack of people that can helpand the committee has recommended that a night time VBS possibly be considered this year.

Kathern Shope, librarian for our church for many years reti red this year. Herresignation was reClretfully accepted and Martha Hoffman was named in her place. Thanksto Kathern for her MANYyears of service and GOODLUCKto Martha .

. September, October, and November marked another great contest between the Annies andthe Sannies. An old-fashioned ice cream social was hosted by our committee for a fun-filled family night to get the contest under way. Afterwards the CWFladies shared slidesof their recent trip to Mississippi. The losers hosted the December coffee fellowship bybri ngi ng cooki'es. This contest was recognized by the Cl ea r Day semi nar on September 15at CTS and a gift certificate was received by our church. Thanks Lon!

After completing my second year as Chrfstian Education Chairman, I want to thankeveryone who has given of thei r time and talents to the education program. A very specialthanks to a very supporti ve committee.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT - 1990The worship committee started the new year makin9 plans for the Lenten season.

They selected a small booklet "Portraits of Christ" which was inserted in the Tidingsand sent to each home. The children of junior church led a procession waving palmsto open the Palm Sunday service.

Forty-eight people participated in the 24 Hour Prayer vigil that took placeWednesday of Holy Week and concluded at the beginning of the r.laundyThursday service.

For the Easter season the altar was decorated with 40 live, potted, spring flowers, clustered around the 8 foot cross.

The worship committee hosted a family night on April 29. The singing group,"Resurrection" gave a very enjoyable pro9ram, and refreshments \1ereserved by thecommittee.

For the Harvest season the alter was beautifully decorated with pumpkins, corn, fall flowers and gourds.

For the Advent season the committee decided to write their own book of AdventBlessings. Various members of the congregation were asked to write a short storytelling of their most memorable Christmas. The stories were compiled into a bookletand presented to the congregation.

The church was decorated for the Christmas Season. Fifty-four beautifulpoinsettias were purchased by church members in memory, or in honor of loved onesand made into a large tree.

Cards are sent each week to the people assigned as greeters, to remind themof their duty.

I want to thank everyone who worked on my committee, and to thank the con9re-gation for their support and participation.

r.1E~1BERSHIPCOMMITTEE REPORT FOR 1990The membership committee bought a new camera for the church due to the fact

that many times polaroid pictures did not stay as nice as 33mm would. Our big project for the year was our July celebration held at the Carroll

High School with activities for all age groups. Over a hundred attended thisevent and the committee felt it was a success.

We did have one problem with the camera and that is somebody borrowed itshortly after it was purchased and has forgotten to return it to the church. Now the church is in need of a camera again but we did not have sufficient fundsleft to buy another.

I, personally, would like to thank my committee members for their helpduring the year.

Respectfully submitted,Vonda Pennington

EYAN~ELISM COMMITTEE - 1990

Evangelism's most visible efforts in 1990 included placing four churchsigns at the edges of town; promoting "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" Sundaywith signs in members yards and passfng out loaves of pumpkin bread at theservice; and entering a float in the town Christmas parade. The float depictedthe manger scene, and the costumes were used durfng church services throughoutthe Advent season. Two large church banners were purchased for the float andwill be used for future programs and projects.

Ads in the local newspaper were used to fnform the community of specialevents and services at our church, including those pertafning to Easter,Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The newspaper was also used for church "noveltyads" and to 1ift up new 1He in the church through "birth announcements" inthe spotlight column. Sfgns announcing "It's a Girl!" or "It's a Boy!" wereput up in the yards of new parents.

The committee continues to take baked items to first-time visitors to thechurch and newcomers to the community. Of the 14 individuals or familiesvisited, about half are now regular attenders at our church.

The Evangelism budget continues to provide the donuts for the monthlycoffee fellowship.

The minister has greatly aided the committee by providing ideas andresources, promotinq evangelism in the newsletter, and sending out welcomeletters and letters'of invitation.

The committee thanks all those from outside the committee who have helpedwith various projects.

Committee members this year were Becky Eikenberry, Jan Robeson, Gay Wheeler,Joyce Orem, Joan Jackson, and Mike Hoffman.

Everyone can become involved in evangelism simply by inviting someoneto church.

Jennifer Archibald, chairman
