FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE
CALLER No. 15 Vol. 13 ~ August 8, 2017
From the Preacherman….
How much time did you waste this week? In our culture, that question has taken on religious overtones, provoking guilt and acts of repentance for the game, television show or nap that stole an hour or two from your productivity. We are a people obsessed with being busy, watching the clock, or squeezing another ounce of work out of a spent day. We are likely to get angry with people who waste our time and very unlikely to take all or any of the vacation we have coming to us. We are what we do, and if we aren’t working, then what are we worth to anyone? Such is our secular theology. What is the antidote to this idolatry of efficiency and effectiveness? The worship of God by the people of God. Didn’t see that coming, did you? You thought I was going to say something like rest, Sabbath or vacation. The worship of God is the antidote to busyness, pride, sloth or any of the other deadly sins. The word worship is derived from the Old English worthscipe, meaning worthiness or worth-ship, and directs us towards the only One who gives us true worth. What I like most about worship is that it is a waste of time, or to borrow a phrase from theologian Marva Dawn, a royal waste of time. That’s right: the worship of God is a royal waste of time. It is useless in the very best sense of being inefficient and unproductive, without any intrinsic value for the worshiper. The worship of God is for God, not for us. Ideally, what we do in a worship service at church is designed not to make us feel better or to lift our spirits or have any effect on us at all, but to direct our lives once again to the adoration of God. Period. So why is so much modern Christian worship seemingly about entertainment? Because our culture worships entertainment as much as it does work. Because we are the center of universes created in our own images. Because feelings and emotions are the final measure of truth. But God is the only One worthy of worship. God is the center of creation. God is the final measure of truth. If we are not careful, however, worship becomes whatever is necessary to keep people coming to church. You can draw really big crowds doing lots of entertaining things to make people feel better when they leave. But it won’t be worship.
Peace….Chris
Reaching Ringers The music ministry is hoping to restart our handbell program in the fall. The bells need to be refurbished after the fire at a sizeable expense. Before we ship them off, we want to know that there is reasonable interest and enough players to justify that expenditure. Prospective ringers 5th grade through adult please see Mike Tichenor or contact the Church Office. Children & Youth Sunday School Request Teaching a children or youth Sunday school class is a wonderful way to connect with our youngest members. In the coming months, volunteers are needed to teach Sunday school classes. Volunteers are asked to teach four months at a time. The openings are for September through December 2017, January 2018 through April 2018, and May through August 2018. The age groups are Preschool – Kindergarten, 1st -‐ 3rd Grades, 4th – 5th Grades, 6th -‐ 8th Grades, and 9th -‐ 12th Grades. Please contact Pastor Cheryl if you are interested in volunteering.
Congratulations to … Whitney and Bob Byrnes on the birth of their daughter, Clara Joan, on July 7 in Fishers, IN. She has a very proud big sister, Hadley Jean. Grandparents are Stephanie and Chuck Williams and great grandparents Gloria and John Strehl.
Worship News…..
The worship space is changing August 20. We will be returning to the configuration of seating we shared earlier. Worship in the round has been strange, odd and wonderful this summer for me as a preacher. I am interested to hear what you think. I am grateful for your willingness to change and share worship in a different format. It has been good to see you and experience worship in that format. –CM

Youth & Children Ministries
The school year has begun and it’s time to think about supporting our Backpack Ministry. This program provides food each weekend for children at Cravens Elementary School who might otherwise be hungry during the weekend. It costs $150 to support one child’s weekend meals for one school year. If you are able to support one child that would be wonderful; however, all donations are appreciated. Please make checks payable to FCC, write Backpack Ministry in the memo section, and either drop the check in the offering plate or mail to the church at P.O. Box 966, 42302.
