August 2018 Volume 19 Issue 8

Over the last year, I have learned that August is the month of hot weather and slowed schedules in Casa Grande. Not everybody has such expectaons, however. Did you know that world-wide August is also:

American Adventures Month (celebrang vacaoning in the Americas)

Children's Eye Health and Safety Month

Digesve Tract Paralysis (DTP) Month

Get Ready for Kindergarten Month

Happiness Happens Month

Month of Philippine Languages (Philippines)

Neurosurgery Outreach Month

Psoriasis Awareness Month

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month

What Will Be Your Legacy Month In the United States, August is:

Naonal Black Business Month

Naonal Children's Vision and Learning Month

Naonal Immunizaon Awareness Month

Naonal Water Quality Month

Naonal Win with Civility Month

We could all use a lile more of that last one, couldn’t we? It is true that our members and winter residents seem to scaer to cooler climates for the summer, but just think about all

that is going on at First Presbyterian in August:

Walking Group Mondays and Wednesdays

Game Day Monday aernoons

Faith and Family Night at the Diamondbacks Check out the Senior Ministries Update on Page 3 for lots more!

Even though these acvies are a lot of fun, we do need some slower me to rest. Jesus knew that even his human body needed some downme, so he oen went by himself to pray and meditate (Luke 6:12). I think the key thing is what are we doing in our downme. Is it helpful, beneficial, and honoring to God? I have been making an effort lately to spend more me reading scripture, praying, and studying. Billy Graham, in his last public interview, was asked if he had any regrets. He said that he wished he had spoken less and studied and prayed more. That is good advice for everybody, not just evangelists. I invite you to spend some me this August in prayer, study, and rest. Download the Daily Bread app, and get a dose of scripture, inspiraon, and prayer every day. “I don’t have the me!” you might say. Peter Shankman, self-help guru, says that “We find the me for what we want to do most.” He reminds us that we have as many hours in the day as Beyonce. Beer yet, we have as many hours in the day as did Jesus, and he knew the importance of taking some me for study and prayer. Try it and let me know how it’s going. Senior Ministries Update

Senior Ministry is now being led by Lavena Snyder and Elizabeth Elgin. We are grateful to Larry Pazier and Debbie Burde for all their hard work and for their connued support. We are also grateful to the congregaon for their paence with us as we get moving! We connue to be busy this summer and have plans for the fall. Please join us for any or all of the following: Walking Group—Everyone is welcome to walk in the Family Life Center Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:30—9:30. Cool air, cold water, music, and company are all free. This is open to the public, so please invite friends and neighbors. No judgement—we just want to be healthy together! Game Day—We connue to gather every Monday aernoon for games and laughter, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Snacks are provided. If you have a game you enjoy, bring it! Early Bird Dinner—Join us at Golden Corral every 4th Thursday from 3:00—5:00 pm for dinner and fun. We meet in the private dining room (aer you pass the cash register, turn right—it’s conveniently right across from the dessert bar). Community Night—the first Wednesday of each month we host a potluck at 5:00 in Room 17. In August, it will be August 1st, and we plan an internaonal theme. Bring a dish from your heritage, or just something you think we should try! Also, we will have an open mic. Tell a joke or a story. Tell us what you think about. Show us your rock collecon. Sing a song. Just be prepared to hear your voice loud and we promise to be supporve! Movie Night—Watch for details about this new acvity! We plan to have the first showing on September 11 in Room 17. Popcorn will be provided! Faith and Family Night at the Diamondbacks! - August 24th at 7:05 pm the game starts, and aer the game the band Mercy Me (“I Can Only Imagine”) will play. We have hired a van to take anyone who doesn’t want to drive. Details will be forthcoming at church. Tickets are limited, so let Lavena or Elizabeth know before July 31st if you want to come. Church Picnic—Again, watch for details! We are looking at October in Dave White Park. Games, grilled meat, fun in the (somewhat cooler) sun! The Senior Ministries Team is open to suggesons, so let us know what you think, and if there are things you would like to see/do (for example a quilng group, hiking, cooking classes, etc.). Let’s make this a fun year to grow, celebrate, and worship together!

Worship

Revelaon 3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Have you ever sat next to someone in church that you didn’t know? Did you introduce yourself and welcome them into our worship service? We are all disciples of Christ. We all have a responsibility to make those who want to parcipate in our weekly worship service to feel welcomed.

Were you in your assigned seat or wanng to be and someone else was sing there? Did you welcome them anyway? I ask this because of two instances in my life. One where I was in a new community searching for a new church. I came in and sat down (no one even greeted me). I was then approached by a lady and was asked to move because I was in her seat. Did that make me feel like I was in a Chrisan church to honor and worship our Lord Jesus Christ who blessed everyone who invited Him in when He knocked on their door? My answer was no and I never went back to that Presbyterian church again. My second experience was at a church in an area where I was vacaoning. I had to drive 35 miles to find this Presbyterian church. The experience however was so much different. Because I arrived early, I was welcomed by a couple of church members and given a tour of their complete facility. This was an old church but they were proud of it. I was told about the church’s history and shown what they had just accomplished on their renovaon project. I was then personally introduced to the Pastor. Later during the service, I was introduced as a vising Presbyterian to the whole congregaon. What a tremendous feeling that was that Sunday worshipping with this “friendly and welcoming” family. I knocked and they opened their door. That’s what we should do all the me. Be a Presbyterian hospitality ambassador and welcome anyone who comes through our door to worship the Lord. Blessings to you, Larry Pazier Worship Elder

Wednesday, June 27, a group of about 20 met with our missionaries to Indonesia for lunch in Room 17. John, Juli, Josh, James, Jona, and Joel Liles (along with John’s parents) enjoyed sandwiches, chips, fruit, and ice cream prepared by Karen Lloyd and Elizabeth Elgin. The past few years, John and Juli have worked with the islanders to get clean water, electricity to homes, and toilets. Indonesia is 80—90% Muslim. John and Juli teach the children and work with those most in need. They teach the people to work for what they get. Women are shown how to earn money by sewing and how to save money to buy a sewing machine and fabric. It was a joy to eat lunch and visit with them. It was inspiring to listen to their story of working alongside Muslims and unbelievers as they demonstrate God’s love. They really are the hands and feet of Jesus. The people of Indonesia see Jesus and His love in the Liles family. They requested prayer for: Money to pay rent for Cornerstone for the next five years Safe travel back to Indonesia Management free from fear Please also pray for renewal of mind, body, and spirit for Will and Jamie Jordan and family, our missionaries in Af-ghanistan, as they take a short break.

Coming Soon: Our mission trip to the Navajo Reservaon near Flagstaff. October 13 is the date. We are

collecng blankets, bath towels, kitchen towels, and candles in a jar with a lid. Also coming soon is Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox gis ministry. Get ready! It will be here before you know it.

Memorial Committee On behalf of the Memorial Commiee, I would like to thank the decorang commiee of the Sanctuary and Parlor for making such a fesve display between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Great job. Marcey Honodel, chairman

Our church’s Personnel Commiee needs new members! What does that involve??? Well, personnel team members are asked to aend meengs on an “as needed” basis and to maintain strict confidenality of all discussions and decisions. They also assist in annual staff performance evaluaons and may assist in other personnel decisions. If you are interested in serving on this commiee, pleas contact Elder Ronny Douglass at (520) 705-4230 or [email protected].
