What makes an effective trainer?

Clear and effective communication skills.

Subject expertise (which is developed ‘on-the-job’) – First Aid is always evolving and our Trainers continue to learn and undertake professional development workshops to refresh/update their knowledge.

The ability to ‘read’ an audience/class and utilise different delivery and assessment techniques to suit class needs.

A strong team focus – our Trainers often work individually but always contribute to the aims of the wider training team.

Flexibility – Trainers often travel to remote communities and hours of work can vary in order to meet customer needs.

What qualifications do I need to work as a full-time Trainer with St John NT?

To be eligible for employment with St John NT as a First Aid Trainer, you must hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110), or an ASQA recognised equivalent qualification (evidence of recognition will be required). The Certificate IV is a mandatory requirement in order for our training to meet ASQA conditions.

A list of providers approved by ASQA to deliver the Certificate IV can be found at:

As a Registered Training Organisation under the governance of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), St John NT is proud to deliver quality, accredited and non-accredited First Aid Training to the Northern Territory community and aims to make First Aid part of every Territorian’s life. Our First Aid Trainers help to equip people with skills and knowledge that could one day save a life.

As a St John First Aid trainer, not only are you directly involved in promoting First Aid to the public, but your work also contributes to the activities of St John Volunteers. As part of the not-for-profit (unfunded) arm of the organisation, revenue generated from First Aid courses goes directly to supporting St John Volunteers and Cadets, enabling them to train and equip Members to provide First Aid Services at events across the Territory.

St John employs full-time First Aid Trainers in Darwin and Alice Springs. The majority of training takes place at St John training facilities, but St John will deliver training across the NT no matter where the customer may be located*. We offer a range of programs, from short (3.5 hours) courses in CPR up to a 2 week Industrial Medic Response (IMR) course.

Do I need a background in First Aid to become a Trainer?

No. Your first day on the job will be as a student on our Apply First Aid course. You will quickly acquire the knowledge and skills as part of our internal Trainer Certification Process, supported by our existing accredited trainers. All materials and resources are provided by St John.

The internal Trainer Certification Process usually takes between 5-8 weeks, after which time you are able to deliver courses as a fully accredited Level 1 ‘solo’ trainer.

What are the rates of pay that apply to First Aid Trainers?

The salary range is between $53,501 and $63,007. St John has different levels of trainer which equate to the courses each level of trainer is approved to deliver. As you participate in more advanced courses, you pick up the skills and knowledge to enable you to deliver those courses, and you can progress to the next trainer level. Each level carries with it an increase in salary commensurate with the additional knowledge gained.
