    NOMEX vs. FireWear: The Truth

Fabric Content: DuPont NOMEX IIIA aramid (93% NOMEX - 5% KEVLAR -

    2%Carbon).

Characteristics: Inherently flame resistant anti-static fabric engineered to reduce"nuisance" static. Self-extinguishing, will not ignite, melt, drip or burn. Thesecharacteristics make NOMEX an exceptional all around fabric for applications such as

petroleum refining, petro-chemical, fire service, and gas and electric utilities.Nomex is a registered trademark of DuPont.

From the DuPont Website: The inherently flame-resistant properties providedby NOMEX mean that those who rely on it are safe and protected from the hazards theyface on the job every day. It is that knowledge and sense of security that enables them to

concentrate on the task at hand, and to make a substantial contribution to things that areimportant in our every day lives.

NOMEX Arrives as a Long Chain Molecule

Advanced thermal technology was born more than 30 years ago when DuPont scientists

created a fiber with an extraordinary combination of high-performance heat- and flame-resistant properties, as well as superior textile characteristics. In both fiber and sheet

forms, NOMEX helps people and materials to perform, even in highly aggressiveenvironments.

    NOMEX Thrives as an Enabler

Professionals all around the world count on their skills and savvy to prevail in the face ofdanger. That's why in industries like firefighting, race car driving, power generation and

plant operation, professionals rely on NOMEX as the vital link between what ispossible and what is accomplished in essential thermal protection.

DuPont's family of NOMEX fiber products provides outstanding heat and flame

resistance and offers excellent textile properties. Applications include filters, industrialcoated fabrics, etc., etc.

NOMEX is also used for electrical insulation in both paper and pressboard forms, where its inherent dielectric strength, mechanical toughness and thermal stability provide

high reliability in the most demanding applications.

    Spunlaced Fabrics

Nonwoven fabrics of NOMEX and KEVLAR brand fibers. Weight, composition andput-ups engineered for a variety of applications where themal- and flame-resistant

    properties are essential.

Fabric Content: FIREWEAR 55%FFR (Fibrous Flame Retardant Fiber) - 45%

Cotton.Characteristics: Inherently flame resistant woven and knit fabrics. Blended from cotton

and a fiber designed to smother flames when exposed to fire. The FFR Fiber isdesigned to emit a noncombustible gas through microscopic pores in the fiber when the

fiber is exposed to flame. This gas smothers the flames much like a fire extinguisher.FIREWEAR fabrics are blended with cotton and thus have many of the natural benefits

of cotton breathability, high-moisture regain, and lightweight comfort.FIREWEAR FFR Fabrics are trademarks of Springs Industries, Inc.

    From the Springs Industries website:

Our collection also includes a line of Firewear fabrics made from an inherently flame

resistant blend of 55% Modacrylic and 45% Combed Pima Cotton. This blend offers a

huge aesthetic advantage when compared to chemically treated fabrics and are flameresistant for the life of the garment. All yarns are ring spun and plied for added strength.

The woven fabrics range in weight from 5.5 to 9.5 oz/sq. yd., and we offer both twill andplain weaves. Also included in our Firewear line are knits from 6.0 to 14.0 oz/sq.yd.

Jersey, pique, fleece, ribs, and double French terry are the major stitches. Uses ofFirewear knits include underwear, shirts, and sweat shirts. They offer style, warmth,

    and excellent thermal protection.

Our fabrics meet or exceed NFPA Standards 1971, 1975, 1977, 70E, ASTM - F1506 andOSHA 1910.269. We believe Springfield's quality, service and competitive pricing are

second to none - you be the judge.

Here's how inherent FFR Fiber (Fibrous Flame Retardant Fiber) Works:

It's not just a surface phenomenon, but from deep within the fiber itself. As can be seen in thescanning electron photomicrographs, before the FFR Fibers are exposed to heat and flames, they look and feel just like any other textile fiber. When exposed to a flame source, the reactionbegins.

Upon exposures to flames, certain molecular components of the fiber emit non-combustible gas-released through tiny pores in the fiber - which smothers the fire much the same way that a fire

extinguisher does. These gasses shut off the oxygen feeding the flames, thereby stopping furtherburning. Yet you don't even know the FFR Fibers are there until you need them!

The flame-resistance performance of the FFR Fiber is so effective that it can be blended withuntreated combed cotton to produce inherently flame-resistant fabrics. And because no additionalchemical treatment to the fabric is required - since the FR is part of the fiber itself- the combedcotton-comfort, bright colors, durability and ease of care are retained.
