    correct use of radios

The Fire Department Radio System is provided for fast and effectivecommunications during routine and emergency operations. The reliability of thesystem depends on correct use and operation of the radio equipment. Thefollowing rules pertain to radio transmissions (messages) and radio monitoring(listening).

Think about the message before transmitting.

When transmitting on portable radios, hold the radio so the antenna isvertical to the ground.

Remember the range of portable or hand-held radios is limited whenaccessing the repeater even under the best of circumstances. In-vehicle mobile radios are best at reaching the repeater when talking todispatch or other responders.

Hold the microphone or the face of the portable radio two to threeinches from the mouth and speak directly into the microphone.

When transmitting, depress the Push-To-Talk (PTT) switch and swallow

once before talking Speak in a clear voice at a normal tone and rate. Do not yell, whisper,

speak too fast, or too slow.

When called on the radio, respond with the correct call-sign and beready to receive the information.

Stand with back to wind when talking
