A Note from Our President

2 fswo.ca

i am pleased and privileged to welcome delegates and special guests to the 2013 Fire Service Women Ontario Conference and Annual General meeting. I have had the privilege to serve in a leadership role for Fire Service Women Ontario over the past two years, and have seen many progressive steps forward for this

young and growing organization. Thank you to our member-ship for bestowing your confidence and for pledging your sup-port and guidance to the Board of Directors as we move this valuable organization forward together. The strength of our organization is based in the network of dedicated profession-als from the many aspects of fire services across Ontario, and the many talents and perspectives they bring to the table.

I would like to acknowledge the support of the Office of the Fire Marshal for hosting this year’s conference at the Ontario Fire College, and to the representatives from the Ontario As-sociation of Fire Chiefs, Ontario Professional Fire Fighters As-sociation, Fire Fighters Association of Ontario for their sup-port and guidance.

Diversity in the fire service is not an issue exclusive to one or-ganization. Together, I am confident that the same collective energy and passion that drives our efforts to help making On-tario a safer place to live, will also serve us well in cultivating today’s and tomorrow’s generation of diverse fire service pro-fessionals and organizations together.

Enjoy the conference and consider taking an active role in FSWO by offering your time and talents to the various initia-tives and activities we undertake throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Carol-Lynn Chambers, President

October 30, 2013

Fire Service Women Ontario

On behalf of our community and of all of the members of the Gravenhurst Fire Department, I’m delighted to extend a warm welcome to the executive and all of the delegates, instructors and guests of the Fire Service Women Ontario 3rd Annual Conference and General Meeting.

Diversity in the fire service is important to every community in Ontario and the work that the FSWO does to promote a greater understanding of this issue is equally important. Developing the knowledge and skills that will keep firefighters safe from the adverse affects of our work environment is critical to each one of us and importantly, our families. To that end, I wish each and every attendee a weekend full of learning and great memories.

Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable and educational stay here in Muskoka!

Larry Brassard, CMMIII, CFEI Director of Fire and Emergency Services/Fire Chief

Between July 9th & 12th, 1997, the largest Poly Vinyl Chloride fire in North America took place in the City of Hamilton: the infamous Plastimet fire. I attended this fire & saw the immediate health effects it took on the 294 Firefighters who attended this fire. This was this fire that lead me into advocating for sick and ill Firefighters and their families in Hamilton and a few years later working for OPFFA advocating for sick and ill Firefighters in the Province of Ontario.
