The first, full revision of the Code of Practice since 2013, it contains a number of changes over the previous version. Some of the key changes include:

• To reduce the chance of either malicious or accidental activation it is recommended that all manual call points are fitted with a protective cover. Fitting protective covers to manual call points is now the default recommendation. A “variation” to the Code of Practice must be declared if covers are not fitted.

• Means of safe isolation for maintenance purposes must be provided however there is no longer a requirement to provide double pole isolation adjacent to control equipment and power supply units.

• Additional guidance including a new annex addressing the selection and application of fire detectors has been incorporated.

If you continue to click the ‘Tab’ button and the text turns white you have tabbed too far and should use the ‘decrease level’ button to return to compliant text. Do not use the bullet point button to format your text.

• Improved definition of the L2 fire alarm system: L2 Fire Alarm Systems are designed to offer automatic detection on all escape routes within a building

• Modified guidance for use of multi-sector detectors, with distinct sections dedicated to both the application and testing of these

• Clauses 17 and 18 require clarification as to the use of Voice Alarm Detectors (VADs) and Visual Indicator Devices (VID)

• Inclusion of a section in the standard concerning the testing of the power supply, and how long any batteries or contingency power supply should last for

• Guidance for persons who work at night so they can recognize the alarm

2019 should see a new part to the BS 7273 series:

• BS 7273-6 Code of practice for the operation of fire protection measures – Interface Systems

Proposed scope includes:

• This part of BS 7273 gives recommendations for the design, installation and commissioning of interface systems between fire detection and alarm systems and other measures that form part of the fire strategy of a building, excluding those systems covered in other parts of the BS 7273 series. Systems covered by this part include the interface systems for automatic operating vents; grounding of lifts; shutting off of gas valves; and smoke control systems.

• The majority of documents are being completely reviewed, with some PDs rewritten from scratch

• Likely some PDs, such as PD 0 and PD 8, will be merged into the BS.

• Simultaneous release to Public Consultation and publication

• Public Consultation expected Q1 2018, with publication Q3 2018.

• Key focus on ensuring all data is as up-to-date as possible.

• Good mix of academics and practical users on the drafting panels.
