Tips if you have hearing, sight or mobility difficulties

Hearing difficulties

•Ifyouhaveahearingdifficultyyoucangetasmokealarmwhichusesastrobelightandvibratingpads.Alternativelyconsiderlinkingthealarmsystem,whichcanalertyouofanydanger.

•Intheeventofafire,ifitisdifficultforyoutocall999yourself,askaneighbourtodoitforyou.

•Ifyouhavespecialistequipment,suchasatextphoneorminicom,youcancontacttheemergencyserviceson18000.

Sight difficulties

•Putacolouredstickeronyoursmokealarmifyouhavetroubleseeingittotestit,oraskyourlocalFireServiceiftheycanprovideacolouredcover.

•Considerfittingbump-ons(alsoknownasplasticblisters)toappliancesasawayofmakingsuretheyareswitchedoffproperly.

•Checkelectricalleadsregularlybytouch.Iftheyarefrayedorfaultydon’tplugtheminorswitchthemon.Ifelectricsaregivingoffaburningsmellturnthemoffandunplugthemimmediately.

•Youmayalsowanttoconsiderplacingatactileindicatoralongyourescaperoutetomakeiteasiertofindtheexit.

Mobility difficulties

•Ifitisdifficulttotestyouralarmasksomebodytodoitforyou.Youcanalsogeteasyaccessalarms,whichcanbetestedfromthewallratherthantheceiling.TheDisabledLivingFoundationcanprovidemoreinformationontheseproducts.

•Ifyouhavetroublemovingaround,considerfittinganintercomwhichwillallowyoutoalertsomeoneelseinthehouseintheeventofanemergency.

•Makesureyouhaveeasyaccesstoanymobilityaidsyoumayneed,suchasawalkingstick.

If you use oxygen

•Makesureyouroxygenequipmentisstoredsafelyoutofdirectsunlight,wellventilated,alwaysdryandawayfrom heatsources.

•Don’tuseoxygennearnakedflames,includinggasandelectriccookers–3metres isasafedistance.

•Forfurtherinformation, contactyouroxygensupplier.

Never smoke or use electrical appliances, such as hairdryers, whilst using oxygen.

If you use an electric blanket

Store electric blankets flat or rolled up. Folding them can cause damage and increase the risk of fire.

•Waterandelectricitydon’tmix,

soavoidgettinganelectricblanketwet.Ifyoudo,waituntilitiscompletelydrybeforeusingitagain.

•Neveruseahotwaterbottleandanelectricblankettogether.

•Testelectricblanketseverythreeyears.YourlocalFireServiceorAgeConcernmaydothisforyouforfree.

In the event of a fire

Don’t tackle fires yourself. If you can, get out, stay out and call 999.

•Ifyoucan’tdial999yourselfget

aneighbourtodoitforyou.

•Ifyoucan’tgetoutstayinaroomwithashutdoor,windowandphone,ideallyatthefrontofthehouse.

•Putbeddingroundthebottomofthedoortoblockoutthesmoke,thenopenthewindowandcall“HELPFIRE”.Keepawhistlehandyifit’shard toshout.

•Ifyoucan,closeinsidedoorsatnight.Thiswillhelpprevent afirefromspreading.

Get out, stay out and call 999

Plan an escape route

Think about all possible escape routes in case there’s a fire.

•Itisagoodideatopractise

anescapesothatyoufeelconfidentyoucoulddoit dayornight.

•Keepaphoneinyourbedroomincaseyouneedtomakeanemergencycall.Ifit’samobile,keepitcharged.

•Makesureexitsarekeptclearandwelllit.

•Makesureyouknowhowyourhouseorpersonalalarmworks,includinganypasswordsorcodes.

Keep keys where you can find them in case you need them in a hurry.
